The Daily Mirror reports that during the Conservatives’ 2017 campaign, the then Prime Minister Theresa May said she had “always supported fox hunting” and vowed to give parliament a free vote on the issue. This was quickly weaponised by Labour and the story spread online. May’s proposal to reintroduce fox hunting with a free vote was the single most viral topic of the election.
Since then, the Tories have had an unwritten rule: don’t talk about fox hunting. During the leadership election, Jeremy Hunt suggested he would back a free vote – only to then perform a hasty U-turn saying: “This is not something I will seek to change as prime minister”. Meanwhile, Boris Johnson point blank refused to talk about it when questioned.
Labour have brought the issue to the news agenda with a pledge to launch a crackdown on fox hunting by boosting the number of dedicated officers working on wildlife crimes. A £4.5m fund would be used to almost double the number of officers prosecuting such crimes.
Nigel Farage, the Brexit Party leader, would like fox hunting to be legal, but says that he doesn’t engage in the “sport” himself. “I like the debate about fox hunting – and I like the idea that government shouldn’t regulate whether we hunt foxes or not,” he says. He attends his local hunt every Boxing Day – mainly, he claims, because it’s the only place in the county where you can get a pint at 10am.

Michael Joseph Savage (1872-1940), or “Mickey” as he affectionately became known, was one of the country’s best loved Prime Ministers. For two generations he spearheaded the social security structure of New Zealand, being a leading spokesperson for increased pensions and a totally free health system.
He was a leading figure in the New Zealand Labour Party following its formation in 1916, and he succeeded Harry Holland as leader, following the latter’s death in 1933. In 1935 Savage became New Zealand’s first Labour Prime Minister when Labour was swept into power at the tail-end of the Depression. Immediately a Christmas bonus was paid to the unemployed and poor, and a programme of state housing commenced. In 1938 he began drawing up plans for his Social Security system, calling it “applied Christianity”. This provided for a universal free health system and an old-age pension of 30 shillings a week for men and women at age 60, with a general payment at the age of 65.
"Mickey" Savage, along with Peter Fraser and Walter Nash, were considered 'the big three' in the early years of the first Labour Government. In 1938, despite already being diagnosed with colon cancer, Savage made many inspiring speeches during the election campaign, leading the Labour government to an even greater victory than in 1935. Despite declining health he continued to lead the government, until on 27 March 1940, he died at his home in Wellington, at the height of his popularity.
There was a huge outpouring of grief after Savage’s death, with hundreds of thousands paying their respects in Wellington and Auckland and at stops along the main trunk line as his body was transported to its final resting place at Auckland’s Bastion Point, where the Savage Memorial now stands. For decades after his death this photograph still hung on the wall in thousands of New Zealand homes. It comes from the Nash collection, of which you can see more here: www.archives.govt.nz/gallery/v/Walter+Nash+Exhibition/

Managed to brave the wet weather to vote this morning, and got a photo of the queue, then in the evening went to Horsham Library for a session celebrating the end of the Horsham District Monthly Reading Challenge.
There were two authors present, William Shaw here is reading from the first book in a new crime series called Salt Lane.
The other author was Juliet West. I read her first book, Before the Fall, as my January challenge (read a book based on a real person or event).
Both were very happy to chat, and it was an enjoyable evening.
The challenge is moving to Mid Sussex next year, as it was so popular, with some changes of topic. I can strongly recommend it if you like reading, and need to get out of your comfort zone!
I have become a library user again thanks to this, which I spotted on Facebook in February. Libraries need all the support we can offer them.

Call to Action: We are asking our supporters to speak up for wildlife by asking Prospective Parliamentary Candidates these questions. Visit Sussex Wildlife Trust website for more information.
Despite huge conservation effort and great successes like the designation of the South Downs National Park, our wildlife is still under threat and in decline. The next Government faces real challenges to reverse this trend as the effects of climate change become a reality.
We have contacted all the Prospective Parliamentary Candidates (PPCs) standing for election in Sussex to ask how they and their parties intend to tackle these threats and protect and enhance the wildlife and landscapes of Sussex. Their responses will be on www.sussexwt.org.uk from 19 April 2010.
