Vilnius Old Town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is the heart of the city. Its old palaces, narrow streets and countless churches of different denominations attract tourists to Vilnius. The castle on Gediminas Mountain stands proudly above the Old Town.
Climbing the steep hill on which Gediminas Tower is located, you can to climb the cobbles or steps. There is a Funicular on the far side but we couldn't be bothered walk round to it!
Gediminas' Castle Tower is the remaining fortification tower of the Upper Castle. Legend has it that the Grand Duke Gediminas dreamt of an Iron Wolf howling at the top of this hill, which he took as a prophecy of the great city that would one day stand in this place. The hill is where he eventually built a wooden castle.
Grand Duke Vytautas completed the city's first brick castle in 1409. Gediminas' Tower has changed purposes since then, including being used as the city's first telegraph building in 1838. The Lithuanian flag was first flown at the top of the tower a century ago. The Vilnius Castle Museum was opened in 1960, and in 1968 it became a subdivision of the Lithuanian National Museum.
Happy Window Wednesday!

Gediminas’ Tower is the obvious choice when you want to enjoy a high vantage point with a view over the skyline of Vilnius. The tower is located on a hill and is itself one of the city’s most iconic landmarks.

The National Museum of Lithuania in Vilnius (Lietuvos Nacionalinis Muziejus) is impossible to miss. It’s situated below the castle hill, and the Gediminas’ Tower appears to be hovering just above it.

When we arrived in Vilnius, we were caught off guard by the harsh winter weather. The temperatures reached -23 degrees Celsius! During our first evening in the city, we set out to capture a panorama of the Vilnius Skyline from the Gediminas’ Tower, To get there, we walked along the frozen banks of the Neris River.

amazing city, very authentic. if you compare Riga, Tallin and Vilnius, the last one is my favorite I guess. Although all of them are pretty of course. Enjoy.
...you don't know how lucky you are, boys!
We begin a new chapter on our page, having just returned from a very successful trip to Lithuania, our North-Eastern neighbour. We wouldn't have done it if it weren't for the help of Gediminas . Thanks to info provided by him, we managed to get some very interesting pictures.
We start our virtual journey on the station Šeštokai. Event though the border station on the Lithuanian side is in Mockava, a lot happens over here, as it is home to a small depot, a tiny industrial facility and a transloading bay for containers and various other goods. We swiftly made our way through a footbridge to the shed, as we had spotted something very out of the ordinary peaking out of the building. There I could realise a tiny wish of mine I had and I quickly grabbed the map of the Lithuanian Soviet Socialist Republic from 1988 to take the picture. Per request of the very friendly crew, the loco number is covered, although I suppose most of you know what it is by now.
I thereby open up the Lithuania/Lietuva - Trains/Traukiniai album :)

Three Crosses (Lithuanian: Trys kryžiai, Polish: Góra Trzykrzyska) is a prominent monument in Vilnius, Lithuania, on the Hill of Three Crosses, originally known as the Bald Hill (Lithuanian: Plikasis kalnas), in Kalnai Park. According to a legend, which finds its source in some historic events, seven Franciscan friars were beheaded on top of this hill. Wooden crosses have been sited in the location since the early 17th century, and they became a symbol of the city and an integral part of the city's skyline.I
