The chaps at the stores were also urging us to come in. We passed. The stairs at the left probably lead to the tour company- we could not locate it at street level. Just like in Hoi An in Vietnam, which I had visited in Nov. 2016, here in Amritsar too all the restored historic buildings had been done up in one standard monotonous design- two tone beige with brown signage which ad a border done up in a Punjab pattern. I think we have had enough of the Toronto Chinatown district now, so now let us wrap it up and move on. We have seen all manner of Chinese cafes and stores so far in Chinatown, including a place doing tramp stamps (tattoo), but one thing woefully missing so far was garments! Most of the shacks in the cluster of shops here are eateries with just a couple of rentals for warm clothing, like the one in the foreground, and one convenience store in the midst of that cluster. This is a garments store as well in that cluster, which I'd missed when viewing the cluster of shops from a distance. On my 1979 visit, almost all garments stores in Kashmir offered leather jackets. On this visit in 2024, I could not find a single shop selling leather garments. Most garment stores in Kashmir offered stuff like this, or pashmina shawls, or Chinese style padded nylong jackets. A typically Indian saree shop in KL's Brickfields district, right next to my hotel. Although this area is also Brickfields, and very conveniently located just minutes away from KL Sentral (sic), Kuala Lumpur's main train station, the actual Little India part of Brickfields is still a little way away, about a ten minute walk away.
