As we approached Grand Junction, a series of mountain ranges with interesting rock formations appeared on our right hand side along I-70.
My "Beautiful Scenery But No place To Pull Over to Photograph Syndrome" immediately kicked up a notch and a half!
Oh wow, how lucky as we exited the highway for food, a service road allowed us to pull over and me to take a few images of this remarkable mountain peak along with a dramatic looking sky (it was a bit windy and drizzling), all from the comfort of the passenger seat!
Hmmm, should we do a hike up to this peak instead of one in Colorado National Monument?
A quick Google Map lookup gave me the answer: "The best training in town, hands down. The incline sections are nasty and are perfect for mountain training. Very steep and you definitely want to mind your footing to not take a long tumble on the way down." 😱😱😱
For the inquiring minds:
"One of the main geological features of the Grand Valley is the Bookcliffs, a dirt-covered mountain range extending 200 miles, beginning where the Colorado River flows through DeBeque Canyon near Palisade, all the way to Price Canyon, which is near Helper, Utah.
The most noticeable landmark of this range is Mount Garfield, which is only a two-mile hike up, but the elevation change is 2,000 feet, making it a very challenging climb. The crusty dirt on the trail can be slick at times, so hiking poles are recommended, especially on the way down."
I wish you a wonderful weekend!

If you are in the Los Angeles area, check out cat café Crumbs & Whiskers. It's a great place to spend a half hour petting and playing with cats and all cats are adoptable. I used to have an orange stripey cat who was super feisty named Dr. Pirate and so I am always a little timid around them but Garfield was super sweet and loving. He would make a great pet cat! Go check them out today!

on a hiking-tour in chinque terre - please, looking at this view - it was a little bit fearsome for us! :)

Gem Way, Garfield, alley behind a bunch of Penn Avenue businesses, is full of stuff no one is supposed to see, but which nonetheless often fills the camera frame in unexpectedly pleasing ways. In this one, the faded cheer and weathering of the garage, the covered stair, and the tower caught my attention. Everytime I look at this I see a large black boot in the lower left, until my brain sorts it out.
Mount Garfield is found just to the north and east of Grand Junction Colorado. It is the eastern most major peak in the Bookcliff Mountains, the Bookcliffs are an older range of mountains that run mostly east to west.
The Warner Local waits in the Rio Tinto interchange yard while the ISCLB 01 blasts by on Main 2 at Center Garfield, Utah on Oct. 1, 2015. In an interesting twist, the ISCLB (Intermodal, Salt Lake City-Long Beach) train was upgraded to Z-train status when Precision Scheduled Railroading was adopted in 2019.

Thanks for your visits, faves and comments..(c)rebfoto
I like Garfield very much, so funny ;-D. What do you think: "Is this a lookalike?"
He is a bit sad, don't know why......
Thank you very much for your visit. Any comment (I read them all ;-)) or fave that you may leave is very appreciated.
Short line operator Savage Bingham & Garfield took over Union Pacific freight operations on the former D&RGW Bingham and Garfield branches in 2007.
A pair of former Santa Fe B36-7s were mainstay power for the carrier when photographed pulling through West Jordan, Utah on the Bingham Branch on Feb. 18, 2008. SVGX 3612 and 3611 were built Santa Fe Railway 7495 and 7494 in November 1980.
The five loads of steel beams will be dropped at SME Steel in the Bagley Business Park in outer West Jordan.
This right of way is now a double track light train transit line, operated by the Utah Transit Authority. Freight trains run in the middle of the night.
Train #1875 departs Garfield, New Jersey on the Bergen County Line behind the honorary #4109, one of thirteen GP40Ps built for the CNJ in 1968 with NJDOT money and now beautifully restored to its CNJ livery. The spur on the right was part of the Erie's Dundee Branch which, in its last years, was operated by the ill-fated New York and Greenwood Lake.
BNSF 1064 takes a grain shuttle north on the Arkansas & Missouri Railroad at Garfield, AR. I was not expecting to get one of these leading anytime soon.
Thanks to Alex for this beautiful portrait
***** UPDATE - I think that some people are mistaking this for a "normal" fall color image. Although it was taken in the fall, almost all of the yellow-orange color in the scene was, in reality, green. The infrared processing is what changed the color *****
No, those aren't Larches - this is a color Infrared image of Mt. Garfield from the Middle Fork Trail. Coming in from the left is the Taylor River, emptying into the Middle Fork Snoqualmie River. I know color Infrared isn't for everyone, but it's fun once in a while. Full Spectrum converted camera (by Life-Pixel) with an external Super Color Infrared (590nm) filter.

Le chat
I
Dans ma cervelle se promène
Ainsi qu’en son appartement,
Un beau chat, fort, doux et charmant.
Quand il miaule, on l’entend à peine,
Tant son timbre est tendre et discret ;
Et contient toutes les extases ;
C’est l’esprit familier du lieu ;
Il juge, il préside, il inspire
Toutes choses dans son empire ;
Clairs fanaux, vivantes opales,
Qui me contemplent fixement.

With flags flying and one customer parked in front. The Courthouse was originally constructed in 1901. A two million dollar restoration was completed in 2011. Garfield has the smallest population of any county in Washington state with only 2,266 residents in 2017, less than half of it's population in the early 1900's.
