I wouldn't trade it for anything, never.

Never.

I've been on the West Coast for the last two and a half weeks, visiting friends and staffing at Not Back To School Camp (www.nbtsc.org). I'm back with some great photos, and I can't wait to catch up on all the photos I missed on flickr while I was away!

Gabe's Tower in Owensboro, Kentucky is a ca. 1963 motel, which makes it likely to be the oldest freestanding, cylindrical tower in the country of its kind. With its groovy cylindrical form, its pastel-paneled façade, its 12th-floor restaurant and cocktail lounge, and its heated roof garden with swimming pool and retractable glass roof by local architect R. Ben Johnson (1921-2009) for restaurateur and local legend, Gabe Fiorella, Sr. (1900-1977), Gabe's Tower was the hippest place in town in the 1960s and ‘70s.
The tower was owned for a period of time with intentions of being converted into housing for homeless veterans. Plans fell through and the city of Ownesboro put out an RFP for development proposals in November of 2019. Nobody came forward and the city is now putting out an RFQ for demolition. Gabe's Tower will likely be demolished by the end of 2020, unless some miracle transpires.
I dont find a lot of happiness in this world, but I take comfort from the whole process of portraiture, from shooting to editing and sharing. The experience of really looking deeply at another person is a humanizing experience and I think it is good medicine for everyone: for me as the photographer, for the models I work with, and for those who seriously engage with the images that come out of this process. Sitting in hopeless quarantine, not having shot anyone in an anxious and food-less month, I’ve found something that feels like a moment of peace in processing this image of Gabe today. His tears feel like my own, and I imagine his beautiful face as a tender link that could reach out and connect us, a face that could speak with quiet nobility for our sad collective moment.
Gabe always gives me the biggest smiles and giggles when I change his diaper,... this time I brought a camera to catch him in the act!
