Cade Cove. New set of antlers starting to show.

during a cold snap in early April, I had the opportunity to shoot a sunset from the famous Morton's Overlook. This was the only time during the day the harsh light and lack of clouds didn't work against me!

These are some elk I had the opportunity to photograph on the side of the road in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park.

A very colorful sunrise in Great Smoky Mountains NP.

Folks should know this little waterfall pretty well...it's pretty difficult to miss on the side of the road in Tremont (Great Smoky Mountains) on the way up. Luckily back in June there was some nice rains the night before to really pump up it's flow. Sure would be nice to be there about now to cool off...miserable heat wave... Stay cool this weekend!

The John Oliver Cabin was constructed in the early 1820’s by John Oliver and his wife Lucretia. The Oliver's were the first permanent white settlers of Cades Cove, which is now part of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park.

Terrible fires burning in Tennessee in the mountains. Pray for Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge.

Crisp, quiet, calm, cool....words that describe a few moments along Big Creek from my trip last fall to the Great Smoky Mountains. It was getting close to the end of the day, the light was slowly fading and not even a slight breeze, so I went with a longer shutter speed to smooth out the water to try to convey what was being felt. Hope everyone has a great weekend!

A curve within Great Smoky Mountains National Park. It lived up to its name for the couple of days that we were there, with heavy fog blanketing the mountains all the way up to the highest peaks.

Pretty rare for me to try something in B&W, but I wanted to give it a go in this one....going to the extreme really. Probably not that good, but I like it and...it's all that really matters I guess. I'm hoping to expand my photography in 2017 and get out of a rut it feels like I've gotten into. Look for more intimate scenes...better light, better compositions....just have to see how it goes, but something to work on at least. Anyway, this shot is from last April in the Smokies, up Lynn Camp Prong in the Tremont area. I hope everyone's year is off to a great start!

After years of taking photos within a few steps of my back door, I was recently--and finally!--able to make a trip to one of my favorite places. I've loved Cades Cove (seen in the accompanying black and white photo). It's a long valley nestled against the Great Smoky Mountains in east Tennessee.

There are many stunning views of The Great Smoky Mountains, themselves. Like all great mountain ranges, they offer a apparently limitless aspects at different times of day, in different light, with changes in clouds. These are much older mountains than the more dramatic Rockies and are thus more rounded due to erosion. This shot was made from the Foothills Parkway when the light could hardly have been more inviting.

The blue hour on top of the Great Smoky Mountains is truly amazing. There are so many layers of mountains with different shades of blue. This was taken from Clingman's Dome, the higher point in the Smokies.

OK. More slightly away from my norm again... I was walking back down the Big Creek trail with my buddy Tommy White, pretty far up (we had went the whole 5 miles up), when I noticed the rock wall next to the trail had the oddest texture. When I looked closer, it had this ridiculously intricate lichen, I think, growing all over it. I had carried my macro lens for just this occasion, hoping I'd spot something a bit unique, a little extra weight, but worth it I think. I'd love to know if this is really lichen or not, or what kind. I hope everyone's having a great weekend!!

Springtime in The Great Smoky Mountains

Some Facebook friends have seen this one so figured time to get it over here :) This one's from a last minute trip to the Big Creek area of the North Carolina side of the Great Smoky Mountains two weeks ago with Tommy White. We wanted to camp there, but with only 12 sites, and leaving Charlotte/Boone at 4pm...there was no luck in our favor. We ended up staying at Cosby campground in the Smokies not far away. Midnight Hole was our first stop (1.5miles in) on the slow, gradual hike. We ended up just scouting the area basically all day, hiking the full 5 miles in to the backcountry camp site "#37". I felt great, but that last couple of miles back to the car was rough :-) Hope everyone has a great weekend!
