Another one for the "invention" theme. I received my Garmin GPS running watch for Christmas in 2010. I can definitely say that it changed the way I run and encourages me to run a lot more. It is the best fitness present I have received. It maps your route and gives you your distance run, time taken, pace per km, average pace per km, calories burned and elevation. You can also view your route on your computer afterwards. If you are a runner I would definitely say this is worth getting. It is a great invention!
I started having trouble uploading runs from my beloved Nike+ GPS watch to my computer on Friday. Nike, which seems to be very committed to customer support, immediately sent me a replacement watch. Not only did they send me a replacement, but it's a more recent model than the watch that I originally bought.
I purchased my Nike+ last summer out of frustration with a series of Garmin GPS watches whose only consistent feature was their unreliability. The fact that Nike not only replaced my watch, but replaced it with an updated model as well, confirms my decision that I will never again give Garmin a cent. There are companies that do a much better job of standing behind their products than Garmin does; Nike is one of them.

Fortunately, Nike really stands behind their products. The watch is still under warranty, and some time this week my husband or I will be able to take it into the Nike Store and exchange it.

I have owned a Garmin Forerunner 405 GPS watch since December 2009. The long and the short is that I have had nothing but misery from it - I replaced it several times when it was under warranty, and every replacement has had the same reliability issues as its predecessors. I simply have no faith that the Garmin will work when I take it out for a run. I wanted to replace it for a long time, but did not want to give Garmin any more money after the last lemon I purchased from them.
Recently Nike came out with its Nike+ GPS watch, powered by TomTom. I didn't really NEED a new GPS watch - it's not like I'm still in marathon training - but I do like being able to run with one when I am shooting for specific mileage but don't want to be tied to a specific course. Thus, I splurged, and bought myself an early birthday present.
The Nike+ arrived yesterday, and I ran with it for the first time today. It took a little while to find its satellite on this cloudy morning, but that's an issue I'd have with the Garmin or any other GPS watch. Once I got going, it kept an accurate distance read on a known course. It is easy to wear, and its buttons are much easier to use than the Forerunner's bevels.
Will this be the perfect GPS watch? Only time will tell. But considering my feelings about the Garmin, my thought is that I can only be happier with this in comparison.

Here's a tribute to my good friend Fishst1k.
He is more like me than anyone else I know. Granted I'm like 15 years older, shorter, not as much in shape, I'm not a NASCAR fan, and I don't get drunk as often -- we both share the same ideals and concepts about life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. Not only that but on the occasion that we are pissed off at each other, we are able to accept differences and move on. That's pretty cool in a friend.
However this tribute is more of a roast. Ben is the only guy I know who can guzzle a beer and run a mile under 5 minutes... AT THE SAME TIME! (just kidding). Anyway, I hear he's looking into the rumor that the Olympic biathlon is going to be changed from Nordic skiing and shooting to guzzling beers and running a marathon. If that is the case.... my money's on Ben.
