Gion Area, Kyoto, Japan

Gion (祇園) is a district of Kyoto, Japan, home to many geisha houses and traditional tea houses. Gion originally developed in the middle ages, in front of Yasaka Shrine. Gion is the best place in Kyoto to see geisha and maiko in the streets.

This part of Kyoto has two hanamachi (geisha districts): Gion Kobu and Gion Higashi. Despite the considerable decline in the number of geisha in Gion in the last one hundred years, it is still famous for the preservation of forms of traditional architecture and entertainment. Part of this district has been declared a national historical preservation district.

Along Hanami-koji dori in Kyoto, the famous Geisha district.

Bokē incidentally is a Japanese word 暈け which means blur and the “bokeh” spelling was adopted so that non Japanese speakers can pronounce it correctly.

I love the really smooth OOF (Out Of Focus) rendering, you can’t quite see the buildings in the background but if you’ve been there before, your mind will be able to fill in the details.

The lighted red lantern with its black letterings stay sharp within the plane of focus.

Gion is most atmospheric in the evening, lots of nostalgia and mystery.

Country Life, Fireworks display of Gion Festival

田舎暮らし・祇園祭花火

Today is the Gion Festival. Many fireworks were launched in my hometown as well. Please note that I used "lighten composite" (stacking) to make the number of fireworks appear greater.

今日は祇園祭。私の田舎にも多くの花火が上がりました。

比較明合成で数を多めにしている点はご了承下さい。

This is a fairly well-known confectionery shop in Gion, Kyoto. Nothing too special about this shot-- I just liked the image with the white Yamaha Vino scooter parked in front.

Interesting to find a small Inari Shrine in an obscure corner of ancient Gion.

The shrine is illuminated in the evening, adding a lovely splash of glossy vermillion to the old brownish wooden tones of the area.

Re-processed 16Nov21 with minor improvements.

A Maiko in all her finery, in particular her gorgeous long Darari obi (だらり帯 ie "dangling" obi) at the back. This long obi is even more spectacular at night when the shiny embossed patterns shimmer as she walks by.

Soft warm light from the interiors seeps out through thin gaps in the wooden lattices, a common characteristic of the night scene in Gion.

A real Maiko in historical Gion, Kyoto. Not those fake ones playing dress-ups in the daytime.

Handheld shot at ISO6,400 and f1.4 as it was rather dark plus shot was taken at a higher shutter-speed to freeze motion at close distance, no noise reduction.

An old shot. I've gotten a lot more proficient with post-processing such shots these days. ISO6,400 without the colors appearing thin and washed out, quite happy with this.

Learning to post-process more competently has a much greater impact on better image quality than blindly chasing after new gear or being inanely obsessed with lens sharpness.

Handheld night shots are challenging, those involving moving subjects even more so hence more fun.

3 months ago I spoke about a possible OM-5 here; www.flickr.com/photos/86145600@N07/51890597694/

It appears that OM Solutions (OMS) is indeed going to announce the OM-5. This should be a non-sports oriented body, probably with the same BSI sensor as the OM-1 but without the additional stacked layer and sophisticated AF. This unstacked BSI sensor should marginally outperform the existing E-M1 Mkiii or E-M5iii non-BSI sensor in real terms without resorting to software trickery. This is plausible as Nikon likely did the same in reverse by adding a stacked layer to their 45mp sensor derived from their D850 and Z7 bodies to produce the Z9.

Nikon went from 12mp (D700 in 2008) to 36mp (D800 in 2012). Will OM-5 be 40mp when the prevailing OM/Olympus cameras have been at 20mp since the E-M1 Mkii launched in 2016?

Re-edited 10 Feb 2021, happy to get more out of the RAW file.

Vermilion fence (朱玉垣; shutamagaki) and lanterns in a quiet corner of ancient Gion, Kyoto.

The bit of fence with some reflected light to the right of the frame was from the headlights of an oncoming vehicle.

The greenery around the center provides a good contrast against the autumn colors.

One of my earliest night exposure efforts, re-edited from RAW. Once we get the fundamentals right, it is easy to replicate night shots with crisp, properly focused results.
