It's been several years since I was able to take advantage of a snow covered city for doing photography. The last few Winters have given us milder temperatures and've been almost completely snowless. This year we've been having a lot so I've made a commitment to get as many Winter shots in as I can as there just aren't that many in my portfolio.
We had a heavy snowfall and when I got up and when I saw that it was still happening, I jumped to it, got dressed quickly and dashed out the door, iPhone at the ready.
It's a wholly different beast shooting with a lot of snow around. The camera reads it as very bright and compensates for the tremendous amount of reflective "bounce" that's saturating the air with light. With muted, cloudy skies this tends to bleach out all the colour from the world and leave only basic earth tones and varying blacks and whites.
So in processing this I decided to keep that almost monochrome feeling but emphasizing how much this red brick house stands out on a muted, grayed-out, snowy day. I eliminated all the other colour except for red and added a hint of "ancient text" texturing for a softer touch.

Pano-Sabotage in all 4 images ( 3 are very clear, one is hidden ), compiled and layered. Diptych or Triptych ? Using text as a drawing device. It's non-"sense" is a way to open up the use of script or font so that it doesn't "read" as any specific language. The free hand "looping line" is a unifying element.

As Rene Magritte once noted on one of his most famous paintings, "Ceci N'est Pas une Pipe". Indicating that the image of the pipe in the picture is NOT an actual pipe. It's a signifier or visual metaphor for one.
Here, through image, text and line "drawing" I'm playing with the notion of all these formal elements being signifiers for more direct realities. It's through several forms of language that we begin to see the totality of reality ( pun intended ).
Gerhard Richter once emphasized that it's only through multiple views, and not one single one, that we can begin to apprehend the full spectrum of reality. I tend to agree with him.

Combining the Pano-Sabotage technique with multi-image layering and compositing. For the first time using text purely as line, as another aspect of drawing. Hints of pixelation are used to quietly texturize in a few discreet places.
I decided to make a jump from having text that conveyed meaning in a single language ( English ) to taking it beyond that specificity and using it more as a metaphor and as a purely formal, visual device. Now it's not tied to any culture or tradition, except maybe a broadly Western one. When I can I'll find a way to incorporate non-Western fonts and text. Numbers are in the queue of recent images waiting to be posted.

Pano-Sabotage with some bump-ups in colour saturation. So this is 99% straight out of the camera.
This is as close as I get to creating a "Christmas" or "Holiday" image. Being in retail and NOT supportive of the rampant materialism of what the Season has become, I tend to let this time of year go by without so much as a peep. But things are changing around this holiday. This is the first year in my entire life that I've seen stores putting their Christmas wares on sale to get people into stores. They're just not doing it.
Some have pointed to unprecedented sales via .com services - people chosing NOT to shop in actual stores, but to simply just order their gifts and have them delivered. Convenient, yes, but utterly impersonal. Finding that gift, the one that surprises you, rewarding yourself for all your shopping with a little something for yourself and jostling with the crowds, as stressful as it is at the time, all of that is taken away in simple efficiency.
Large corporations reap the profits of .com shopping and all the small merchants lose their shirts and their businesses as we march lemming-like more and more each year to a totally "corporate" society. All difference, individuality and uniqueness of invention is quietly euthanized in the smarm of artificial delights, such as this window, concocted by corporate merchandizers and market analysts. Electric, Plastic, Distraction. A glittering daze to blind the sight from seeing what monstrous 'machines' are doing behind the scene.
Some have also suggested an unspoken unease in the market place as we enter the final stretch to January 20, 2017. We'll find out soon enough .....
I don't wish to splash cold water on anyone's enjoyment of the Season, no matter how we each celebrate it, or not. My family and I, for the first time in a while, are going to have a very traditional Christmas dinner as we realize that we won't always have each other. Being together is what's MOST important for us. We've dropped everything else around the Season and just want to relish in each others' company. I wish you all the best of the spirit of the season, in whatever way makes you the happiest !!!!!
That serious analysis aside, this window was artistically too much to resist. I Pano-Sabotaged it with my iPhone, "pumped up the volume" of the colour and spiced it up a bit with some processing. The super indulgence of the image seemed to call out for it. Good to "go BANG" again.

Winter is not my favourite season. Here in the downtown of a big city, there's little beauty to it. Yet, once in a while, if you're out and happen to be ready, you can grab a few shots that reveal some of the unique beauty of this time of year.
On this morning, it was bitterly cold but the light from the early morning sun on the fresh snowfall from the night before was absolutely stunning. And despite my frozen digits, I was able to bang off a couple of shots before taking pity on my hands and shoving them back into my gloves and then into my coat pockets. When I turned around to head back north, everything was filtered in a haze of black, the result of a bit of "snow blindness". A big fat cup of tea when I got home was my reward and the delight of seeing that I got two good images out of the 6 that I shot.
Colour-wise I tried to achieve the effect of being out in bright snow for a while. As a kid you'd come in from playing outside on cold, crisp but bright Winter days and there'd be this blue-ish haze that would obscure your vision as you struggled to get your boots off and not step in the puddles forming under your feet. I thought it was 'neat' as a young kid that everything was awash in a blinding blue haze for a few minutes.

This is to symbolize our solidarity with the French People who were terrorized and killed yesterday in 6 locations in Paris. There are over a hundred deaths so far and more than three hundred 300 wounded. Some of the wounded, about a hundred, are not expected to survive.
I created this poster on January 9th, 2015 to honor and remember the dead in the Hyper Cacher Supermarket in Paris. These innocent victims deserved our thoughts and the attention of the news media just as much as did the Journalists of Charlie Hebdo magazine who, sadly, were killed the day before by the same group of islamic terrorists.
In the ten months since then, neither the French, the English, nor we Americans have taken any effective action to begin to prevent these mass murders on our soil.
Once again, yesterday was another horrible day!!!

It seems me that the French, as well as we Americans, were not on top of the situation. These Islamic groups have declared war on us repeatedly. The French say there are over 5000, that's five thousand, radicalized French men and women who are learning to kill us effectively. They simply don't have enough law enforcement officers to track them all.
The same situation applies within the United States. The FBI and Homeland Security agencies have stated they cannot keep track on a daily basis of the activities of the large number of radicalized individuals in this country.
Frenchman, Englishmen, Belgians, Netherlanders, and Americans must awaken from their slumber.
We must act NOW!
Radicalized monsters within each of our borders must be apprehended and incarcerated. We in the USA have an advantage because we have begun to free tens of thousands of people convicted of non-violent crimes. There are now plenty of empty jail cells for these murderous fiends.
It is time we act. In time of war, as declared by President Hollande, the civil rights of the enemy are typically suspended, and they are apprehended and incarcerated. Then they cannot commit further atrocities.
Congress should declare forthwith that a state of war exists, so that we can legally arrest these vile and deadly would-be mass murderers.
Democracy, Christianity, and Judaism are not suicide pacts. Let's face the facts. We are at war!
President Hollande of France has said this was an act of war. In such times, we are not obligated to let radicalized would-be mass murderers range freely throughout our lands.
