Arboles caducifolios de hasta 10 m de alto. Ramas jóvenes pelosas, con abundantes lenticelas; corteza grisácea, escamosa. Hojas de 5-12 cm de largo x 5-12 cm de ancho, de poligonales a más o menos ovales, con 3-5 pares de lóbulos laterales, aserradas, generalmente cuneadas; peciolo de 10-25 cm de largo. Inflorescencias en corimbos, con ramillas densamente pilosas en la floración, casi glabras en la fructificación. Flores con sépalos de 2-3 x 2-2,5 mm; pétalos de unos 6x5 mm, unguiculados, blancos. Estambres 18-20. Fruto en pomo de 12-15 x 11-15 mm, subgloboso, anarnjado. Vive en bosques de frondosas desde GranBretaña y España hasta Hungría. En Iturraran se encuentra en las zonas 1 y 8.

En esta temporada tan extraña que estamos teniendo, con altas temperaturas y ausencia de lluvias prácticamente habían desaparecido las "setas" de nuestros montes y bosques. Sin embargo aquí en la Sierra de Huelva, las precipitaciones han vuelto, no de manera contundente, pero si lo suficiente como para que vuelvan a fructificar algunas especies, veremos hasta donde llega esta nueva eclosión.

Bathinda - Six hi-tech LED vans, meant to promote the government schemes in the district, have reached Bathinda.

 

At present, these vans have been parked at the Police Lines and the work will start from July 1.

 

The vans will move around in different Assembly segments in the district to create awareness about government schemes as well as provide information on how people can avail the benefits of these schemes.

 

These vehicles are equipped with modern LEDs. Such tasks will be carried on across the state in the next few days.

 

An information capsule has been included in the film, ‘Chaar Sahibzada’, which will carry messages that will be shown in villages in the evening.

 

A senior official said each van would roam in each Assembly segment in the district — Bathinda (urban), Bathinda (rural), Talwandi Sabo, Maur, Bhucho and Rampura.

 

Raising questions over this move, senior Congress leader and former minister Harminder Singh Jassi said this was a plan by the SAD-BJP government to mislead the people of the state but it would not fructify as people knew the truth and they were fed up of this government.

 

They are eagerly waiting for the elections to dislodge the SAD-BJP coalition, which has failed on all fronts in the last nine years, he added.

 

He said the law and order situation had deteriorated, inflation had gone up, sub-standard material had been used in construction of buildings and roads.

 

Jassi lamented that instead of wasting public money on this project, the government should have used the money for the welfare of the people.

We went into the terminal, got our cases, and went outside to arrivals where our fixer was here, and lead us out into the morning sun and heat to a fleet of landcruisers to take us to our lodges outside the reserve.

 

Nagpur seemed a small city, though has a metro, and also has the usual mix of houses, rich and poor to barely standing.

 

Then out into the countryside, where the harvest had just been gathered, and the land is being ploughed, though some fields of cotton were still standing.

 

The journey had less horn tooting, but to make it more interesting, short stretches of motorway ended at towns, where there were junctions with no give way lines, no obvious priority, so was a tootin free for all.

 

Someone left their wallet at the service station: the call came over the drivers’ mobiles. It was Jools’s.

 

So we had to turn round and go back five miles to meet the manager, who after Jools described it, returned it, and took no reward.

 

That act saved our holiday.

 

Suddenly we turned off, down an Indian six foot sixer, which I can tell you is a scary thing. Across farmland, bridges barely standing, and dirt-poor villages whose inhabitants hardly marked our passing.

 

Passing traffic did so by playing a game of chicken as to who would drive off the pavement. It made for an interesting drive.

 

And then we swung off the road, though a gate and into a collection of buildings: our lodges.

 

We were met by the owner, made to feel welcome, then offered dinner. More buffet curry.

And then onto the main event, or the first of 17 main events, as that’s how many safaris there is going to be.

 

A fleet of converted jeeps arrives, with two rows of elevated seating behind the driver: Jools and I get in, and a guide gets in behind us.

 

We drive at breakneck speed, through a sometimes quiet village, to the gates of Tadoba National Park, where our credentials had been presented, and one of the limited slots given to us.

 

Our passports checked, we enter the park.

 

It is jungle, but not as we think of it. Dryer, but primitive, with access roads to parts, but others eft alone so not to disturb all the 91 tigers that live here.

 

We see two species of deer: barking and spotted, as well as birds. Though those you mostly hear.

 

It is blindingly hot, and with the heat and bouncing around on red dusty tracks, Jools soo felt ill, but soldiered on, as there was little choice.

 

We came across a troop of monkeys, who looked at us with the distain we deserved. I took shots.

 

We then joined about a dozen other vehicles at a watering hole, as this is where the tigers and cubs came to drink,

Most animals come here to drink.

 

A pack of wild dogs arrived, but were soon alarmed, a deer was barking out warnings that became more frequent, until a majestic male tiger was seen through the undergrowth.

Even tigers need a drink.

 

He came along a bank and out of the grass, right in front of me, paused, then walked on paw at a time into the water, and out the other side to see what the wild dog was barking about.

 

The dog yelped, and the tiger made two or three quick paces, and the dog fled, so the tiger relaxed. But clearly wasn’t happy with the fleet of jeeps and cameras recording his every move.

 

In time he crossed the road and went into the dense vegetation, so after a few minutes, we made to move off.

 

The back of a tiger’s ears look like huge eyes, and our guide spotted him laying down, so we stopped.

 

The tiger yawned, then got up and walked back to the pond before slowly moving off.

Most other jeeps moved off, but we stayed, as our guide had heard more warnings by the deers.

 

And sure enough, a lone female appeared, walked over the track and along the edge of the pond nearest us. She laid down, yawned, and surveyed her options.

 

The walked on, then backed into the water and lay down, taking the edge off the day’s heat.

 

We moved off. In truth the weather had changed No longer forty degrees and hot with it, clouds were building, and flashes of lightning were seen. A keen breeze appeared, knocking dried leaves from the trees above the track as we sped back to the entrance falling on us like snow.

 

Dust devils danced in front of us, and we thought we would get soaked.

 

The journey back took over an hour, with the weather getting worse minute by minute, but staying dry.

 

We reached the gate, dropped off our park guide who hadn’t guided us at all, and we sped back through the village to the camp.

 

WE all went back to our cabins for showers, and even after a good soaking, the white towels showed large amounts of orange dust still came out of our hair and pores.

 

Tired, but happy, we met at eight for supper of, you guessed it, buffet curry and salad. And beer.

The mugger crocodile (Crocodylus palustris) is a medium-sized broad-snouted crocodile, also known as mugger and marsh crocodile. It is native to freshwater habitats from south-eastern Iran to the Indian subcontinent, where it inhabits marshes, lakes, rivers and artificial ponds. It rarely reaches a body length of 5 m (16 ft 5 in) and is a powerful swimmer, but also walks on land in search of suitable waterbodies during the hot season. Both young and adult mugger crocodiles dig burrows to which they retreat when the ambient temperature drops below 5 °C (41 °F) or exceeds 38 °C (100 °F). Females dig holes in the sand as nesting sites and lay up to 46 eggs during the dry season. The sex of hatchlings depends on temperature during incubation. Both parents protect the young for up to one year. They feed on insects, and adults prey on fish, reptiles, birds and mammals.

 

The mugger crocodile evolved at least 4.19 million years ago and has been a symbol for the fructifying and destructive powers of the rivers since the Vedic period. It was first scientifically described in 1831 and is protected by law in Iran, India and Sri Lanka. Since 1982, it has been listed as Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List. Outside protected areas, it is threatened by conversion of natural habitats, gets entangled in fishing nets and is killed in human–wildlife conflict situations and in traffic accidents.

 

Crocodilus palustris was the scientific name proposed by René Lesson in 1831 who described the type specimen from the Gangetic plains.[4] In subsequent years, several naturalists and curators of natural history museums described zoological specimens and proposed different names, including:

 

C. bombifrons by John Edward Gray in 1844 for a specimen sent by the Museum of the Royal Asiatic Society of Bengal to the British Museum of Natural History.[5]

C. trigonops also by Gray in 1844 for a young mugger specimen from India.

 

The mugger crocodile occurs in southern Iran, Pakistan, Nepal, India and Sri Lanka up to an elevation of 420 m (1,380 ft).[2] It inhabits freshwater lakes, rivers and marshes, and prefers slow-moving, shallow water bodies. It also thrives in artificial reservoirs and irrigation canals.[19]

 

In Iran, the mugger occurs along rivers in Sistan and Baluchestan Provinces along the Iran–Pakistan border.[2] A population of around 200 mugger crocodiles lives on the Iranian Makran coast near Chabahar. Due to human activity and a long drought in the late 1990s and early 2000s, it had been pushed to the brink of extinction. Following several tropical cyclones in 2007 and 2010, much of the habitat of the mugger crocodiles has been restored as formerly dry lakes and hamuns were flooded again

Due to the confusion in the current classifications of the genus Sorbus, I prefer to keep the old names.

Typical nivicola kind of myxomycete, these species need the snow cover at least three months place where they after develop. I have been out in woods today and taken a few more photographs of fungi before the threat of a cold snap fructifies next week.

En esta temporada tan extraña que estamos teniendo, con altas temperaturas y ausencia de lluvias prácticamente habían desaparecido las "setas" de nuestros montes y bosques. Sin embargo aquí en la Sierra de Huelva, las precipitaciones han vuelto, no de manera contundente, pero si lo suficiente como para que vuelvan a fructificar algunas especies, veremos hasta donde llega esta nueva eclosión.

In this strange season we're having, with high temperatures and no rain had virtually disappeared "mushrooms" of our mountains and forests. Hierbas perennes glabras. Rizoma horizontal u oblicuo, alargado y sin restos fibrosos. Raíces con tubérculos radicales largos, fusiformes, desarrollados a menos de 8 cm del rizoma. Tallos de 80-250 cm, lisos. Catafilos membranáceos pardos. Hojas planas, más o menos aquilladas, de hasta 70 cm de largo x 3 cm de ancho, insertas espiralmente. Inflorescencia en racimo compuesto con 5-16 ramas de 11-45 (60) cm, erecto patentes, las inferiores ramificadas. Tépalos 11-16 x 2,5-5 cm, de oblongos a oblongo-elípticos, caedizos en la fructificación. Estambres de 10-15 mm, algo más largos que los tépalos. Ovario apenas hundido en el receptáculo. Cápsula de 6-8 (9) x 4m5-6 mm, obovoide, con el ápice obtuso, rodeada en la parte inferior por un anillo formado por los restos de la base del perianto, de color verde brillante, viscosa. Zephyranthus robusta

 

Belonging to the Amaryllis Family (Amaryllidaceae) these Genus Zephyranthus is named after the Greek God of the West Wind Zyphyrus. Known as the fructifying wind, the messenger of spring. It is he who out of jealousy that the the Spartan Prince Hyacinth chose Apollo over him, caused Apollo's discus to kill the youth who's blood Apollo transformed into the hyacinth.

 

Supposedly they flower when the Westwind blows and brings the spring rains. It is also known as the fairy lily, rainflower, zephyr lily, magic lily and rain lily, westwind flower. Here in Samoa they seem to flower whenever they feel like it.

 

This species (robusta / pink) I have found rather easy to grown from seeds. They also propagate by offsets or twin scaling but this is a long slow process. I have some white ones (Zephyranthus candida) which have flowered but do not seed and yellow ones (Zephyranthus sulphurea) which have not flowered at all to date. African snails seem to like eating both of these but do not seem to bother the robusta.

SNC LAVALIN CONTROVERSY .

A High Voltage Slander Campaign M A Baby .

THE SNC Lavalin controversy in Kerala is yet another example of public controversies hatched and fanned up by an anti-Party clique primarily operating within the mass media in collusion with the UDF leaders. The controversy is based on the alleged remarks contained in the confidential draft audit para of Accountant Generals Inspection Report. This so-called report was selectively leaked to the media and a cloud of corruption was sought to be created around CPI(M) leaders, particularly Party state secretary Pinarayi Vijayan who was the electricity minister during 1996-99 period in the last LDF government. A careful examination of the facts will reveal the sinister scheme of the UDF and a section of the media. .

THE ORIGINAL AGREEMENT .

Pallivasal (1940-41), Sengulam (1954-55) and Panniar (1963-64) are among the first generation hydro electric projects in Kerala. Having outlived their normal age and due to heavy maintenance, the full capacity of these plants could not be utilised. The UDF government decided in 1995 to replace the existing machinery and to upgrade and modernise these power projects. For this purpose they chose the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) route instead of calling global tenders. .

Accordingly, a MoU was signed with SNC Lavalin, a Canadian engineering and consultancy firm, on August 10, 1995 by C V Padmarajan, the then minister for electricity in the UDF government and the present vice-chairman of the State Planning Board. As per this MoU, the Export Development Corporation of Canada agreed to provide a financing package for the supply of Canadian goods and services for the upgradation of Pallivasal-Sengulam-Panniar projects (hereafter PSP projects). .

Later on, G Karthikeyan, the new minister for electricity in the A K Antony ministry, visited Canada on February 24, 1996 and signed an agreement for provision of services of SNC Lavalin for Management, Engineering, Procurement and Construction Supervision so as to ensure the timely completion of the project within the agreed time frame of three years

.. Besides, it was also stipulated in the agreement that the annexure documents were also integral part of the contract. Annexure B provided the list of Canadian financed Goods and Services and their prices and an estimate of the overall cost to be financed by Canadian export credit. .

LDF GOVTS EFFORTS .

By the time the Left Democratic Front (LDF) returned to power in May 1996, the power situation in the state had reached crisis proportions. The state was going through three and half hours of load shedding for domestic consumers and 95 per cent power cut for industries. The Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) was also crippled with financial crisis. In such a scenario, the LDF government took measures to complete the ongoing projects on a war footing. It also initiated new projects. As a result, when the term of the LDF government ended in May 2001, the installed capacity of power generation in the state had increased by 1083.6 MW as against the previous UDF governments achievement of a paltry 14 MW. With load shedding and power cut totally withdrawn by the end of LDF government term, Kerala could claim to be self-sufficient in power. .

A key feature of the LDF governments approach was the insistence on a transparent process of procurement. Not a single project, which was started during LDF period was taken up under the MoU route or contracted to MNCs. Open tenders were called for Athirapally hydro electric project (163 MW) and Kuttiadi Additional Extension (100 MW) scheme which were initiated by LDF government. The Kozhikkode thermal project was also tendered and was executed by BHEL. In contrast, under earlier UDF regime, not a single project was contracted through open tender, including the now controversial PSP projects. Further, most of these projects were also contracted to MNCs. .

LIMITED OPTIONS .

After the formation of the government, the LDF ministry faced this question: What was to be done with regard to the projects initiated through MoU route by the erstwhile UDF government? Most of the thermal projects which UDF had already signed MoUs and power purchase agreements (PPAs) did not fructify. In the case of the Neryamangalam and Sabari hydel projects, the LDF government decided to ignore the MoUs and go for fresh global tender. In the case of Neryamangalam power project (25 MW) for which UDF had signed a MoU with the Swedish multinational company .

The Dry Salvages is the third poem of T. S. Eliot's Four Quartets, marking the beginning of the point when the series was consciously being shaped as a set of four poems. It was written and published in 1941 during the air-raids on Great Britain, an event that threatened him while giving lectures in the area. The title comes from the name of a marine rock formation off the coast of Cape Ann, Massachusetts, where he spent time at as a child.

 

The poem discusses the nature of time and what humanity's place is within time. Life is described metaphorically as travelling in a boat and humanity's fixation on science and future gain keeping the travellers from reaching their destination. Within the poem, Eliot invokes the image of Krishna to emphasise the need to follow the divine will, instead of seeking personal gain.

 

Background

 

Eliot began working on The Dry Salvages during World War II, at a time when London was experiencing air-raids near the end of 1940. During the time, he moved around often and spent his time writing mostly lectures or tiny poems. However, he was able to find time to work on the third poem that would become part of the Four Quartets: Eliot envisioned that Burnt Norton, East Coker, The Dry Salvages, and a fourth, yet unwritten poem would be united in a set. Eliot wrote the poem quickly and sent the first draft off on 1 January 1941 to John Hayward. After Hayward received the draft, the two began corresponding about edits and alterations to the poem. Geoffrey Faber joined in and then the poem was soon finished. It was published in the February 1941 issue of the New English Weekly.

 

According to a note by Eliot under the title, "The Dry Salvages—presumably les trois sauvages—is a small group of rocks, with a beacon, off the north east coast of Cape Ann, Massachusetts. Salvages is pronounced to rhyme with assuages." The location is a place that Eliot knew, and the poem links the image of Cape Ann to Eliot's boyhood sailing at Gloucester Harbor. The Dry Salvages also invokes images of the Mississippi River and Eliot's childhood in St Louis. Originally, these images and the other personal references were intended to be discussed in an autobiographical work that was to collect a series of essays about Eliot's childhood.

 

Poem

 

The poem is described as a poem of water and hope. It begins with images of the sea, water, and of Eliot's past; this water later becomes a metaphor for life and how humans act. This transitions into an image of a ringing bell and a discussion on time and prayer. Images of men drowning dominate the section before leading into how science and ideas on evolution separate mankind from a proper understanding of the past. The section ends with Krishna stating that the divine will, and not future benefits or rewards, matters. The fourth section is a prayer to the Virgin Mary for fishermen, sailors, and the drowned.

 

The end of The Dry Salvages starts with a discussion about how people attempt to see the future through various superstitious means. Then the narrator tries to convince the reader that resignation about death is necessary. However, such resignation should be viewed as pushing the self towards redemption and the eternal life in the next world. By acting properly, one would be able to overcome life and move towards the next world.

 

Themes

 

The central image of The Dry Salvages is water and the sea. The images are similar to the Odyssey but represent internal aspects. Humanity loses itself to technology and theories like evolution that separate mankind philosophically from the past. According to Eliot, within each man there is a connection to all of mankind. If we just accept drifting upon the sea, then we will end up broken upon rocks. We are restrained by time, but the Annunciation gave mankind hope that he will be able to escape. This hope is not part of the present. What we must do is understand the patterns found within the past to see that there is meaning to be found. This meaning allows one to experience eternity through moments of revelation. Through Christ, we are able to overcome time unless we do not know him. Our corruption can be overcome and that we are able to join the eternal.

 

Eliot invokes images of original sin and Adam's fall when talking about the past and points out that such events can be forgotten but can still affect mankind. Eliot brings in the image of Krishna to discuss how the past and future are related: Krishna, speaking to Arjuna, claims that death can come at any time and that men should always find the divine will instead of worrying about what their actions will bring. If an individual were to follow Krishna's words then they would be able to free their self from the limitations of time. Even if it cannot be fully attained, the effort in attempting it is still important.[11] The way for mankind to understand the divine will is through prayer and through the power of the Holy Spirit.

 

Many of the images connect back to his earlier works. The images of life as boat adrift with a leak is similar to the "Death by Water" section of The Waste Land. Like images about old age and experience found in East Coker, this image reinforces the need to look at the whole of life and try to see things beyond the limitations of time. Men are supposed to progress, but they aren't supposed to focus on what they can gain in the future. The prayer to the Virgin Mary is intended to help guide the journey which would end with understanding eternity and the Annunciation. It is Mary who will guide the metaphorical sailors to their proper harbour. While connecting back to his earlier works, Eliot also connects back to his family's past; the "Dry Salvages" was part of the landscape his ancestor Andrew Eliot travelled to in 1669.

Part of The Dry Salvages refers to Eliot's joining the Anglican Church and his personal pursuit of the divine. There are also many references to events and places that Eliot knew as a child. In terms of literary allusions, Eliot brings in Krishna's and Arjuna's discussion from the Bhagavad-Gita on acting according to the divine will along with allusions to Dante's Paradiso, the philosophy of Heraclitus, and the Book of Common Prayer. In regard to these allusions, Eliot would mark up his own editions of the works to note where he used quotes or allusions to lines within his work. In particular, his edition of the Mahabharata included a page added which compared battle scenes with "The Dry Salvages".

 

Reception

 

A review in the Times Literary Supplement dated 4 September 1941 stated that there was a "note of quiescence, even of bleak resignation" in the poem and that it "lost that spice of wit which was woven into the logic of the earlier poems". Later, Bernard Bergonzi claimed that "The Dry Salvages is the least satisfactory of the sequence, though at the same time it contains some of its best lines. The opening lines are poor, in a weakly sub-Whitmanesque fashion. Yet the writing suddenly picks up at the words, 'The river is within us,' and from there to the end of the section we have a magnificently sustained sequence". F. B. Pinion believed that "'The Dry Salvages' is a complicated, uneven, and rather prosy poem, in which Eliot continues to say the same thing, with some progression, mainly in maritime imagery". Where is the end of them, the fishermen sailing

It seems, as one becomes older,

That the past has another pattern, and ceases to be a mere sequence—

Or even development: the latter a partial fallacy

Encouraged by superficial notions of evolution,

Which becomes, in the popular mind, a means of disowning the past.

The moments of happiness—not the sense of well-being,

Fruition, fulfilment, security or affection,

Or even a very good dinner, but the sudden illumination—

We had the experience but missed the meaning,

And approach to the meaning restores the experience

In a different form, beyond any meaning

We can assign to happiness. I have said before

That the past experience revived in the meaning

Is not the experience of one life only

But of many generations—not forgetting

Something that is probably quite ineffable:

The backward look behind the assurance

Of recorded history, the backward half-look

Over the shoulder, towards the primitive terror.

Now, we come to discover that the moments of agony

(Whether, or not, due to misunderstanding,

Having hoped for the wrong things or dreaded the wrong things,

Is not in question) are likewise permanent

With such permanence as time has. We appreciate this better

In the agony of others, nearly experienced,

Involving ourselves, than in our own.

For our own past is covered by the currents of action,

But the torment of others remains an experience

Unqualified, unworn by subsequent attrition.

People change, and smile: but the agony abides.

Time the destroyer is time the preserver,

Like the river with its cargo of dead negroes, cows and chicken coops,

The bitter apple, and the bite in the apple.

And the ragged rock in the restless waters,

Waves wash over it, fogs conceal it;

On a halcyon day it is merely a monument,

I sometimes wonder if that is what Krishna meant—

Among other things—or one way of putting the same thing:

That the future is a faded song, a Royal Rose or a lavender spray

Of wistful regret for those who are not yet here to regret,

Pressed between yellow leaves of a book that has never been opened.

And the way up is the way down, the way forward is the way back.

You cannot face it steadily, but this thing is sure,

That time is no healer: the patient is no longer here.

When the train starts, and the passengers are settled

To fruit, periodicals and business letters

(And those who saw them off have left the platform)

Their faces relax from grief into relief,

To the sleepy rhythm of a hundred hours.

Fare forward, travellers! not escaping from the past

Into different lives, or into any future;

You are not the same people who left that station

Or who will arrive at any terminus,

While the narrowing rails slide together behind you;

And on the deck of the drumming liner

Watching the furrow that widens behind you,

You shall not think 'the past is finished'

Or 'the future is before us'.

At nightfall, in the rigging and the aerial,

Is a voice descanting (though not to the ear,

The murmuring shell of time, and not in any language)

'Fare forward, you who think that you are voyaging;

You are not those who saw the harbour

Receding, or those who will disembark.

Here between the hither and the farther shore

While time is withdrawn, consider the future

So Krishna, as when he admonished Arjuna

On the field of battle.

Not fare well,

Lady, whose shrine stands on the promontory,

Pray for all those who are in ships, those

Whose business has to do with fish, and

Those concerned with every lawful traffic

And those who conduct them.

 

Repeat a prayer also on behalf of

Women who have seen their sons or husbands

Setting forth, and not returning:

When there is distress of nations and perplexity

Men's curiosity searches past and future

And clings to that dimension. But to apprehend

The point of intersection of the timeless

With time, is an occupation for the saint—

No occupation either, but something given

Driven by daemonic, chthonic

Powers. And right action is freedom
