Fritz Becker, 1929

This delightful Bauhaus style building is faced in marble and now the Leonardo Royal Hotel.

It was opened in 1929 as the Palasthotel Mannheimer Hof. I've seen an old postcard with brick facing - the marble may be a postwar addition. Following recent renovations the hotel retains its original staircase, lifts and courtyard.

Augustaanlage linked into the Autobahn system in the 1930s, and is a main axis into the city.

The civil engineer who worked with Becker on this project was Dr Erik Kutzner, who has written a book about it:

Thanks to Gergő Demjén for helping me track down this information (see below). Originally the marble facing seemed to me too luxe for the building to be Bauhaus-influenced.
