If only birds would all sit and face the same direction at the same time, lol. At least two of these Bohemian Waxwings gave me a nice pose for a split second. They are such beautiful, sleek birds.

It was cold yesterday morning, when I met friends for a three hour walk at Griffith Woods. Temperature was -10 to -4°C. Eventually, the warmth of the sun could just be felt, which always makes such a welcome difference.

Not a huge variety of birds - we saw so many Bohemian Waxwings (a total of 600+) flying overhead and sometimes landing near the tops of very tall Spruce trees. This was the best I could do, 48x zoom then cropped.

On a totally different note, I had a wonderful surprise yesterday. After receiving a notificiation e-mail telling me that someone had 'buzzed' me on the FriendsReunited website that I had joined quite a few years ago, I discovered two words, "Remember me?" To my amazement, it was from someone who had been in the class I taught for one year in England (my very first year of teaching, in a mixed class of Grade 5/6 (equivalent). He had been a delightful, quiet, shy boy and I remembered hm as if it was yesterday : ) I am so impressed with what he has done with his life - I'm still in awe today! Most of his 36 years of working were spent teaching. When he sent me the message yesterday, he had just finished taking part in the Clipper Round the World Yacht Race - the boat he was on came in third place out of twelve! Such a good, good feeling to hear that a student from so many years ago has used his life so well!

A tale of a boat that sank and became a stone boat that couldn't float.

Just a quick shot taken on 26 November 2015. It was a cold morning, when I met friends for a three hour walk at Griffith Woods. Temperature was -10 to -4°C. Eventually, the warmth of the sun could just be felt, which always makes such a welcome difference. This photo shows a Willow gall, covered in ice crystals. Horribly blown out, but there was still something that I liked about it.

“Pine-cone willow gall” is caused by a gall midge, Rhabdophaga strobiloides. This dipteran (related to flies and mosquitoes) deposits an egg in the developing terminal leaf buds of the willow in early spring. The larva releases a chemical which interferes with the typical leaf and branch development of the willow, instead causing the formation of this cone-like structure. The adult dipteran emerges the following spring, after having spent the winter in the gall. (Information taken from Botany Photo of the Day website, with thanks).

I'm not sure if this was taken in 1989 or 1990. A lot of the faces are strangers now. I'm speaking to one or two of them, thanks to Friendsreunited.com. But neither of us remember each other. Still, happy memories flood back each time I see this picture.

Dalton Middle School was a school for 9 to 11 year olds. As the name "middle" suggests it was a school between primary and high school. Got you used to a more grown up atmosphere.

Dalton was situated in Ratingen, near Dusseldorf, Germany and was one of many Service Childrens Education schools ran my British civilians for Kids who's parents were in the Army and posted outside of the United Kingdom. SCE schools provided (and still do) standard UK curricular education. Basicaly, they are British Schools on foreign soil.

Post 1995, Dalton was closed down after the British Army of the Rhine was disbanded and a great many troops and their Families returned to the UK. Less solders meant less children to educate, as a result many SCE schools that were flourishing at the time of this photo, no longer exist, including Dalton.

On Wednesday, June 7 I got together with Eduard Murray and Mike Baron, who was visiting the UK from Dubai. The three of us have known each other for 50 years, having all grown up in the eastern suburbs of Pretoria, South Africa. We reunited in central London and the pub crawl took us from Piccadilly Circus, to The Toucan, on to the BBC, The Yorkshire Grey, Oxford Street, The Roof Deck at Selfridges and finally to the famous 100 Club, where we caught performances by Frankie Oliver and supporting act ?? (the young soloist with her Gretsch guitar).

postcard published by Buchhandling Innung of Weimar, a four view litho card showing various Schloesser - Belvedere, Rezidenz, Ettersburg and Tiefurt..#

I can't remember where I bought this postcard - must have been from a dealer or ebay seller, via a house clearance, say. It was unusual for tourists to send airmail postcards home at that time, double the 15 pfennig foreign surface rate.[Czechoslovakia and Hungary 10 pf, inland rate 6pf] His next address is poste restante and the main post office in Munich.

On re-examining it I realise it was sent by John Lennon's chemistry teacher in Liverpool, Eric Rushbrooke Oldman (1911-1989) to his parents in Great Yarmouth. Only university educated or wealthy people would be travelling independently to Germany during the NS period. Phyl is his sister. His father is given as the organiser of a political party in the 1911 census! I wonder which party? His parents, Walter James and Alice Maud shared the same surname at birth, both being born in Thetford so may have been related. They married in central London and lived prior to the Norfolk coast at Kettering where his siblings were born.

In the book “John Winston Lennon,” Ray Coleman quotes Eric Oldman, John's housemaster and chemistry teacher, who remembered that “John was awkward, but there was something in him. It wasn't sheer wickedness, but more spirit. He seemed determined not to conform to the rules. But he had a wit and a humor and ability....

,,,there was a simple lack of any wish to get on.

Rushbrook[e] was his maternal grandmother's surname.

John Lennon's first group was the Quarry Men, the school being the Quarry Bank High School.

Eric's parents seem to have retired to the Bournemouth area, where they died.

There is a picture of him here

"Eric Oldman - Head of chemistry & scout group treasurer, plus teacher i/c of the Norfolk Broads sailing trips"

perhaps his German jaunt was related to scouting.

"'Ferric' taught Chemistry, was involved with the school scout troop and took a party boys sailing on the Norfolk Broads each year. He smoked about 60 fags a day until he gave up and switched to mounds of mint imperials"

"Eric Oldman Chemistry. The only thing I ever learnt was the correct way to wring out a cloth and wipe the benches. "

(from Friends reunited page)

Mr Oldman also seems to have written a jubilee history of the Great Yarmouth & Caister Golf Club as a 21 year old for the local newspaper. [his interest in the Broads no doubt stemming from his life in Yarmouth]

Certainly in 1935-1936 straight after this trip to Germany, he was president of the Manchester University Union

Walter James Oldman [1872-1946] , born Thetford, the son of a baker, was given as the licensee of the Star Hotel in Great Yarmouth in 1928 and 1931 to 1946 in Hall Quay.

Friendship

It's a funny old thing, friendship. You can be best friends and sure you will never drift apart, then you leave school or move house and your lives change and you lose touch

I was thinking about this before I got up this morning. About how you make friends and wondering how you make new friends in a new area if you don't have 'the school gate' or 'walking the dog on the same route' in common to meet people.

Sometimes friendships end because they had run their course or one or other of you changes drastically. Sometimes it just happens.

By sheer co-incidence later in the day I re-connected with a much-missed old friend via Facebook.

But I haven't seen the people in this photo for years.

3. My daughter, Barbara, (1998) She wont talk to me. Wont answer emails or phone calls or respond to requests for contact sent via her brother. I don't know why. I haven't seen her since 1999. It makes me very sad.

4. My old school friend, Janet Ferguson (1974 aged 15). I haven't seen her since we left school in 1975. We did have a brief email exchange on FriendsReunited a few years back. After 34 years we probably have nothing in common.

6. Matt and Karen Samba were my neighbours in West Beckton and were witness at my wedding in 1984. I met Karen at a mums & toddlers group and we got on really well. She dropped me suddenly when I moved a few miles away. I worked out why (not my fault). Shame though, as I enjoyed her company.

7. Jenny Jones was my best friend at school (from the age of 7). She is the only school friend I saw after leaving school. This photograph was taken on my 20th birthday, at her place. The toddlers in the photo were born ten months apart and the babies one week apart, so we definitely had things in common after we'd left school. I have no recollection of why the friendship ended. I have the feeling that it was something important at the time.

8. Sue Carroll was my best friend when I was a young mum. She was fun, supportive, helpful and someone I could rely on. We drifted apart when I moved away and we each had new partners. We did make contact again in December 1998 but something happened early the next year that meant we didn't get to meet up. It seems our kids still see each other from time to time, which is nice. This photo was taken in August 1990.

9. Sylvie Thompson was another friend from my 'young mum' days. She lived just around the corner and our kids were friends with each other. Photo taken in 1980 or 1981. (Update

2016, I heard she died a few years ago).

11. Barbara Pearman and Julie (I don't remember her last name). Barbara (in the centre) was the first friend I made after I left school and my first experience of knowing a friend because her boyfriend was friends with my boyfriend. I haven't seen her since about 1979 or 80 and we'd probably have nothing in common now. Julie (the blond) was another 'girlfriend of my boyfriend's mate'. I think that was the only thing we had in common. Photo taken July 1977.

12. Maggie and I shared an office when we worked for the Mirror newspaper. She left to move 'home' to Scotland and I still lived in London - so a bit far to maintain a friendship. She was fun. I did get to visit her in Scotland for a couple of days.

(the young soloist with her Gretsch guitar).

A fantastic day/night with old mates...and a long way from Lynnwood Manor :-)

Where are you now, O Steve?

Steve was a very quiet bloke who grew up in a village near York. He liked a pint, and a joke, and a laugh and he liked his heavy rock.

He and I used to hang out quite a bit. We had a couple of stupid comedy sketch ideas that we kicked back and forth.

One of them was a Spanish gangster type, whose greeting was "b'stard, my friend". This was a few years before The New Statesman and the character Alan B'Stard appeared. We reckon we were overheard doing the 'b'stard' thing...It just goes to show, you need to get these things sent off to the powers that be instead of kicking them around for years.

Steve and I got into trouble at Wearmouth Hall in Sunderland, supposedly for theft and damage. I copped to the damage - I broke open a linen closet when I was very very drunk - but neither of us stole anything.

Steve was really upset about the whole thing. The worst of it was that we knew the guy who grassed us up was Steve's next door resident, a bloke by the name of Jilke. So every time Steve saw Jilke, they had to go through this pantomime of avoiding eye contact.

Steve was studying mech. eng. or civil eng. or something quite difficult, whereas I was an arts student, so college was a bit of a doss, frankly. we got to play with video cameras and talk a lot of theory and opinion, but we weren't really learning anything useful. In fact I doubt that my current job even relates to anything I did at college.

I haven't seen Steve since college, back in 1984. I haven't seen his name on friendsreunited.co.uk

It would be great to get back in touch. maybe I'll see you on flickr.com some time, Steve?

A fantastic day/night with old mates...and a long way from Lynnwood Manor :-)

I'm afraid I haven't anything to share this week. I had a lovely day with my parents and two-thirds of my progeny on Easter Saturday. My dad and one of my daughters had birthdays so we had a nice lunch and cake and hot cross buns, etc. and then went out to a country park to walk it off. However, I don't post pics of my kids. So I have no shots to share from that day.

However, I was schlepping around Friends Reunited and came across a photo of one of my old teachers. He used to run a guitar club. I had been playing for a couple of years when I joined his club and in many ways encouraged me to carry on playing and gave me some good tips about how to improve my playing. I dropped him a line of thanks through Friends Reunited and he came straight back saying her remembered me and saying that he had a picture of him and I playing on stage at a college talent show or some such event.

What amazes me is that we live in a world that we can maintain relationships with people right around the world and feel part of a community with links right back to our school days. All we need to do is have the courage to share a little and we often get much more in return.

I got back in touch with my first-ever girlfriend through Friends Reunited and we met up for drinks a few times. She works for the BBC and was in touch with a journalist, who was doing a feature for the Mirror called something like "first love reunited".

As Michelle and I originally met on a BAYS trip to London, the journo wanted to take pictures of us looking all scientific, hence the clichés in the photo.

On Wednesday, June 7 I got together with Eduard Murray and Mike Baron, who was visiting the UK from Dubai. What a fun day we had. We hadn't seen each other for over 20 years. We were scuba-diving buddies and it was as if we went back in time that day, we were 21 again! We met up at the Hope and Anchor, went for a very cold swim, then had scampi and chips in the pub, and walked up Bolt Tail to see the sunset. Helen's just how I remember her, she even called me a silly moo and I remember her saying that all those years ago. Had 20 years of catching up to do, we lost touch but found each other again via a diving club reunion coming up next month.
