Fort Beekenburg was built in 1703 on a rocky headland on the eastern shore of Caracas Bay on the orders of the Governor Van Beek (and named after him) to protect the entrance to the bay behind it; the Spaanse Water (Spanish water).

The round tower of the fort was completely built out of stones that were fabricated in the Netherlands and which were shipped to Curaçao as ballast.

Fort Jefferson is located in Dry Tortugas National Park. This park is a cluster of seven small islands located 70 miles off the coast of Key West Florida. They were originally named "Las Tortugas (The Turtles) by Ponce de Leon for the abundance of sea turtles that once inhabited the area. The "Dry" was added later due to the lack of fresh water on the islands.

Fort Jefferson was a military installation that guarded the waters off the Florida Keys. During the Civil War, Union warships used the harbor to blockade Southern shipping. It was also used as a prison, mainly for Union deserters. Its most famous prisoner was Dr. Samuel Mudd who participated in the conspiracy to assassinate President Abraham Lincoln.

A pretty spot along the coast of Maine just as you enter the state from the south. A neat little fort to visit and a nice place to take a break as well. Took this view vertical to get the nice tree in the frame.

Folly c.1770 by Thomas Wright for Sir Walter Blackett. Large blocks of roughly-

dressed stone. A triangular bastion c.30 yards long with a square-plan

projection at the apex. The wall is c.8 ft. high, with 16 gun loops. The

front of the square projection has 3 crenellations.

The wall ends in 2 turrets c.6 ft. square with doorways on inner returns,

rough projecting cornices and rough, stone pyramidal roofs. They are c.15 ft.

high.

This build was loosely inspired by Japanese castles in general, although that wasn't what I was intending when I first started - it was going to be a simple star fort. But, it kept on getting taller... and taller...

Build log on my blog, and time lapse video on YouTube if you want to see the "taller and taller" process!

Jaigarh Fort is situated on the promontory called the Cheel ka Teela (Hill of Eagles) of the Aravalli range; it overlooks the Amer Fort and the Maota Lake, near Amer in Jaipur, Rajasthan, India.

Raja Kakil Dev captured the Amber region from the Mina tribes and began construction of Jaigarh fort around the middle of the eleventh century. Over the centuries, the Fort was augmented by subsequent rulers, including Maha Raja Jai Singh II, who added palace apartments to the complex.

The fort, rugged and similar in structural design to the Amer Fort, is also known as Victory Fort. It has a length of 3 kilometres along the north–south direction and a width of 1 kilometre. The fort features a cannon named "Jaivana" (Jaivana Cannon), which was manufactured in the fort precincts and was then the world's largest cannon on wheels. Jaigarh Fort and Amer Fort are connected by subterranean passages and considered as one complex.

I like the graphic quality of the darkness in this.

Mehrangarh (Mehran Fort), located in Jodhpur, Rajasthan, is one of the largest forts in India. Built around 1460 by Rao Jodha, the fort is situated 410 feet (125 m) above the city and is enclosed by imposing thick walls. Inside its boundaries there are several palaces known for their intricate carvings and expansive courtyards. A winding road leads to and from the city below. The imprints of the impact of cannonballs fired by attacking armies of Jaipur can still be seen on the second gate. There are seven gates, which include Jayapol (meaning 'victory'), built by Maharaja Man Singh to commemorate his victories over Jaipur and Bikaner armies.

Amer Fort, located in Jaipur, India, was built in 1592 by Raja Man Singh I. A blend of Hindu and Mughal architecture, it features intricate carvings, expansive courtyards, and stunning mirror work. The fort served as the royal residence before Jaipur’s city palace was established. Known for its artistic elements like the Sheesh Mahal (Mirror Palace) and the Diwan-e-Khas (Hall of Private Audience), Amber Fort symbolizes Rajasthan’s rich heritage and royal history. Its strategic location on a hilltop provided defense advantages, making it a key stronghold. Today, it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a major tourist attraction.

Another shot from the ramparts of Kumbhalgarh fort which will give you a little idea of the inside of the fort. You can see the 36 kms long walls stretching away into the distance and also a few temples. There was also a small village inside the fort which you can see here.

This is one of the most impressive forts of Rajasthan. It was built by Maharana Kumbha, the ruler of the kingdom of Mewar from the valiant Sisodia Rajput clan in the 15th century.

It is situated on a hilltop in the western Aravalli ranges at a height of approx.3600 feet above sea level. The fort has perimeter walls that extend 36 kms.,making it one of the longest walls in the world. The frontal walls are 15 feet thick and there are 7 fortified gateways. There are over 360 temples inside the fort. The palaces are well preserved and the fort is supposed to be the birthplace of the valiant Rajput king - Maharana Pratap.

Kumbhalgarh is situated on the borders of the areas of Mewar and Marwar in Rajasthan.Due to its strategic position it was used as a place of refuge by the rulers of Mewar during times of danger. It remained impregnable to direct assault.

Although it was attacked many times ,it is believed to have been first captured by Emperor Akbar's general Shahbaz Khan in 1576.It was recaptured by Maharana Pratap in 1585.The British took over the control of the fort in 1818 and later returned it to the Sisodias of Udaipur.

The fort is now a UNESCO World Heritage site under the group Hill Forts of Rajasthan.

Unfortunately we visited the fort after 10 am when the sun was already high in the heavens. Not a good time for photography but I did manage a few decent shots.

Fort de Schans was commissioned by William of Orange. He wanted to protect the island and the Texel Roads from the Spanish. The star-shaped fort near Oudeschild was built around 1574. The Texel Roads were important for shipping.

The Schans not only provided coastal defense: during the Dutch Golden Age, the fort also served as a court for mutinies on ships and as a prison. Executions also took place there. In the early 19th century, the fort was enlarged.

In 1811, Napoleon visited the Schans, after which he enlarged the fort and reinforced it with two neighboring forts. The Lunette and the Redoute consisted of single earthen ramparts and served to cover the Schans in case of attack. However, the three forts were never used for warfare.

After the French occupation, they fell into disrepair. In the 1930s, the Redoute and the Lunette were completely excavated. This was partially done at De Schans. The excavated sand was used to raise the dikes. A few years ago, Natuurmonumenten commissioned the phased restoration of Fort De Schans. Several interesting discoveries were made during these restoration works. These included the remains of a centuries-old alleyway that was used as a platform for cannons.
