PRESIDIO OF MONTEREY, Calif. -- The 229th Military Intelligence Battalion celebrated the U.S. Army's 239th birthday by hosting the Army Birthday Ball at the Monterey Hyatt Regency June 7. The evening blended Army traditions with celebration and included a cake-cutting event, musical and theatrical performances, fine dining and dancing. The theme for this year's ball was "Lineage, Language, Leadership."

 

Center for International Security and Cooperation Senior Military Fellow Col. Tracy L. Roou was the evening's guest speaker. Rouu is a Defense Language Institute Foreign Language Center graduate of the Russian Basic Course and previously served as Defense Attaché and Senior Defense Official at the U.S. Embassy in Uzbekistan from 2011-2013.

 

The U.S. Army was founded on June 14, 1775, and is a profession of standards and discipline, customs and traditions, military expertise and trust.

Students, educators and other participants were treated to stage performances, classroom displays and ethnic cuisine, highlighting the cultures of the many foreign languages taught here.

PRESIDIO OF MONTEREY, Calif. -- The 229th Military Intelligence Battalion and Defense Language Institute Foundation celebrated the U.S. Army's 241st birthday by hosting the 2016 Monterey Army Birthday Ball inside the Grand Ballroom of the Hyatt Regency Monterey Hotel, June 4.

 

The evening was a blend of tradition and celebration that included toasts, cake-cutting, musical performances, fine dining and dancing. The theme for this year's ball was the "Roaring 20's" and guests were encouraged to dress accordingly.

 

Command Sgt. Maj. Thomas J. Latter, U.S. Army Intelligence Center of Excellence, was the evening's guest speaker. The USAICoE is the Army's school for professional training of military intelligence personnel located at Fort Huachuca, AZ.

 

The U.S. Army was founded on June 14, 1775, when the Continental Congress authorized enlistment of riflemen to serve the United Colonies for one year.

PRESIDIO OF MONTEREY, Calif. -- The Defense Language Institute Foreign Language Center’s most colorful day of the year came May 8 as the Presidio opened its doors and welcomed a crowd estimated at more than 5,000 during its 31st hosting of Language Day. Attendees were treated to a diversity of songs, skits, dances, classroom demonstrations as well as food and wares that represented the cultures of 23 languages studied here at the military’s preeminent language training facility. Also in attendance were 54 combat veterans of the Vietnam War, honored guests during a “Welcome Home” ceremony led by Col. Paul Fellinger, Presidio of Monterey garrison commander, and Dan Presser, Military and Veterans Affairs Advisory Committee member, in commemoration of the war’s 50th anniversary.

PRESIDIO OF MONTEREY, Calif. -- The Department of Defense’s premier training institution for culturally based foreign language welcomed its newest commandant, as Col. David K. Chapman assumed command of the Defense Language Institute Foreign Language Center during a ceremony on Presidio's Soldier Field May 22. Brig. Gen. Christopher P. Hughes, deputy commanding general for Leader Development and Education at the U.S. Army Combined Arms Center at Fort Leavenworth, Kan., officiated the ceremony. PRESIDIO OF MONTEREY, Calif. -- More than 60 Soldiers from Company F, 229th Military Intelligence Battalion, participated in military operations training with foreign language integration at an Army training site located on the former Fort Ord July 19. The Soldiers' primary objective at the Military Operations on Urban Terrain (MOUT) training site was to locate and recover service members from a simulated helicopter crash while traversing an approximately 1.5-mile course that had the squads gathering intelligence from locals in a variety of foreign languages, responding to direct and indirect fire, encountering improvised explosive devices and clearing buildings.

PRESIDIO OF MONTEREY, Calif. -- Marines assembled from the Marine Corps Detachment (MARCORDET) Presidio of Monterey, gathered for a change of command ceremony July 10 at the Presidio's Soldier Field. During the ceremony departing MARCORDET Commander Lt. Col. Patrick Simon presented the Marine Corps colors to Lt. Col. Rodrick McHaty, incoming commander of the detachment. Later, during his remarks from the podium Simon praised the Marines for their support and hard work during his tenure. The Marine MARCORDET Presidio of Monterey is under the command of the Marine Corps Training and Education Command in Quantico, Va., and is administratively responsible for more than 700 Marines attending training at the Defense Language Institute, Foreign Language Center and Naval Postgraduate School.

PRESIDIO OF MONTEREY, Calif. -- The Presidio and Defense Language Institute Foreign Language Center held a Holiday Tree Lighting Ceremony at the POM Chapel, Dec. 3. DLIFLC Commandant Col. Phillip Deppert presided over the event. The ceremony included musical performances by the DLIFLC Joint Service Choir and Jazz Ensemble as well as a visit from Santa Claus who arrived in a POM Fire Department engine. Two receptions were held after the lighting, one for families at the Chapel Annex and a Leader's Reception inside the Weckerling Center.

PRESIDIO OF MONTEREY, Calif. -- The 229th Military Intelligence Battalion celebrated the U.S. Army's 239th birthday by hosting the Army Birthday Ball at the Monterey Hyatt Regency June 7. The evening blended Army traditions with celebration and included a cake-cutting event, musical and theatrical performances, fine dining and dancing. The theme for this year's ball was "Lineage, Language, Leadership."

 

Center for International Security and Cooperation Senior Military Fellow Col. Tracy L. Roou was the evening's guest speaker. Rouu is a Defense Language Institute Foreign Language Center graduate of the Russian Basic Course and previously served as Defense Attaché and Senior Defense Official at the U.S. Embassy in Uzbekistan from 2011-2013.

PRESIDIO OF MONTEREY, Calif. - For the first time in more than a decade, the Defense Language Institute Foreign Language Center opened its doors to the local community for its annual Language Day celebration.

 

Held May 11, on the open grounds of historic Soldier Field and surrounding classrooms, Language Day was a colorful celebration of foreign languages and cultural education highlighting the 26 different languages taught to military personnel at the Presidio of Monterey.

PRESIDIO OF MONTEREY, California -- The 2018 Language Day celebration was held by the Defense Language Institute Foreign Language Center at the Presidio of Monterey, May 11. Language Day is open to the public and attended by schools across the nation to promote an understanding of diverse customs and cultures from around the world. Approximately 6,000 people attended this annual event featuring cultural displays, activities and international ethnic cuisine served by local vendors.

PRESIDIO OF MONTEREY, Calif. -- The Department of Defense’s premier training institution for culturally based foreign language welcomed its newest commandant, as Col. David K. Chapman assumed command of the Defense Language Institute Foreign Language Center during a ceremony on Presidio's Soldier Field May 22. Brig. Gen. Christopher P. Hughes, deputy commanding general for Leader Development and Education at the U.S. Army Combined Arms Center at Fort Leavenworth, Kan., officiated the ceremony. The event, sponsored in part by the DLI Alumni Association and Foundation, was held at the Naval Postgraduate School's historic Herrmann Hall, in Monterey. The guest speaker for the event was Ambassador Daniel Smith, Deputy Secretary for Intelligence and Research from the Department of State.

PRESIDIO OF MONTEREY, Calif. – More than 3,000 students from across California visited the Presidio of Monterey on May 13 for DLIFLC’s Language Day. Students, educators and other participants were treated to stage performances, classroom displays and ethnic cuisine, highlighting the cultures of the many foreign languages taught here.
