Spring 2019 ~ Wood Stork

The wood stork is a large American wading bird in the stork family. It appears all white on the ground, with blackish-gray legs and pink feet. In flight, the trailing edge of the wings is black. The head is dark brown with a bald, black face, and the thick down-curved bill is dusky yellow. Juvenile birds are a duller version of the adult, generally browner on the neck, and with a paler bill. The bare head and the long bill, which can measure up to ten inches in length, render the wood stork distinctive from other large waders in its range.

after 4 years of photo'ing, i'm still having a hard time taking shots of strangers. maybe it's because:

- my natural tendency toward a direct gaze causes people to sense they're being looked at with great (unknown) intent, and that makes them uncomfortable?

- then i have to lift the camera to my face level (i'm only 5' tall, holding it at waist level won't do)?

- the camera is a point/shoot so i don't have this big ol' pro looking thing hanging from my neck, which seems to help others get away with candids more easily?

but i figured the 16th st. BART (transit) plaza at the Mission district of SF would be a good place to experiment - lots of people coming/going all the time; lots of people standing around waiting for busses; lots of street folk passing time/goods; and lots of people doing not much of anything but hanging, waiting/hoping for SOME kinda action to give their day meaning, or at least a story.

i see this guy only when he was about 2ce that far away, so i had to hurry. without thinking, i had to assess whatever of "his story" i could in order to make a decision to go for it or not:

- well-coordinated with attire/color, no cart of goods accompanying him, maybe he wasn't a street dweller? perhaps he had a nice apt. somewhere?

- but there was that traffic cone, with a knit baby cap on top, and a shirt/jacket wrapped around his head & neck, under the cone, in that heat. it was HOT that day.

- maybe this was a gig/gag?

- uhm, nooo ... i could tell in a split second he wasn't foolin around, you know? it was the look on his face and the weighty purpose in his stride. i can't tell you how, in person, his energy just radiated strength, fire ... and as i lifted the camera, i realized, uh-oh, danger!

damn digitals and their delays - it seemed an eternity. but i figured if i went that far, i'd better hold tight and get him right.

he was glaring, and i swear, decidedly coming FOR me at that point. i was turning away even as the camera finished it's series of clicks and whirs. and as i walked away from him as calmly as i could, i noticed the looks on others' faces all around. people weren't just staring at him questioningly, or exchanging tittering laughs with one another. they were looking back-n-forth between him and me, and they were staring at ME with wide eyes, as if to say "what the f ... ?! are YOU nuts?!"

note to self: in these early stages, try for children and laborers first. people who are greatly distracted and unlikely to notice or care, right?!

Inspired by the title of a Tuck & Patti song, this spot, McWay Falls in Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park, reminds me of the sheer beauty to be experienced here on earth.

This delicately arranged beach cove, complete with an 80-ft waterfall is utterly enchanting. The aqua water really is that color, no foolin'! I arrived here just as the sun was setting and caught the last bit of golden light on the cliff faces.

The lens is an older 35mm f/3.5 on the Pentax 645D. This is a 2-exposure manual blend. I used the Hoya 9-stop ND to achieve a 90-sec exposure to smooth out the water texture. Some Nik color efex for color and contrast.

Hope you like it!

So handsome!

Some fools think of happiness

Blissfulness, togetherness

Some fools fool themselves I guess

They're not foolin' me

These days, climbing around the tracks of Girraween National Park on Queensland's Granite Belt is pretty well beyond us, but we did drive in to the park base. Being the Granite Belt, there are countless granite boulders of every shape and size and I mean, some monolith size. There are also curious shapes and balancing stones are not uncommon.

We passed this one which is about the size of several cars and perhaps 20 feet (7 metres high) on a narrow stretch of the road in so getting a decent shot was not easy. It has a rather ghost like form, perhaps we can call it Casper! If it falls down, it will come this way so run!

Kind of reminded me of Paul Simon's song "Loves Me Like a Rock"

When I was a little boy (When I was just a boy)

And the devil would call my name (When I was just a boy)

I'd say, now who do (Who)

Who do you think you're foolin' (When I was just a boy)

I'm a consecrated boy (When I was just a boy)

I'm a singer in a Sunday choir

Oh, my mama loves me, she loves me

She get down on her knees and hug me

Like she loves me like a rock

She rocks me like the rock of ages and loves me

She love me, love me, love me, love me

When I was grown to be a man (Grown to be a man)

And the devil would call my name (Grown to be a man)

I'd say, now who do (Who)

Who do you think you're foolin' (Grown to be a man)

I'm a consummated man (Grown to be a man)

I can snatch a little purity

My mama loves me, she loves me

She get down on her knees and hug me

Like she loves me like a rock

She rocks me like the rock of ages and loves me

She love me, love me, love me, love me

And if I was President (Was the President)

The minute congress call my name (Was the President)

I'd say now, who do (who)

Who do you think you're foolin' (Who do you think you're foolin')

I've got the Presidential seal (Was the President)

I'm up on the Presidential podium

My mama loves me, she loves me

She get down on her knees and hug me

Like she loves me like a rock

She rock me like the rock of ages and loves me

She love me, love me, love me, love me (Loves me like a rock)

She love me, love me, love me, love me (Loves me like a rock)

She love me, love me, love me, love me (Loves me like a rock)

Oh yeah (Loves me like a rock)

Nanananana (Rock me like the rock of ages)

(Loves me like a rock)

(Loves me like a rock)

(Rock me like the rock of ages)

(Loves me like a rock)

(Loves me like a rock)

Nanananana (Rock me like the rock of ages)

(Loves me like a rock)

(Loves me like a rock)

(Rock me like the rock of ages)

(Loves me like a rock)

(Loves me like a rock)

(Rock me like the rock of ages)

(Loves me like a rock)

I always feel torn when I’m the only one that sees the sky catch on fire. There’s the joy of seeing what no one else saw. But then there’s the realization you don’t have a shared experience — that other people should be able to enjoy the experience. I guess life gets in the way of living.

Tears Of A Clown

The Beat Version

Now if there's a smile on my face

It's only there tryin' to fool the public

But when it comes down to foolin' you

Well, now honey, that's quite a different subject

So don't let my glad expression

Give you the wrong impression

'Cos really I'm sad, oh, I'm sadder than sad

Well, I'm hurt and I want you so bad

Like a clown, I appear to be glad, ooh, yeah

There's some sad things known to man

But ain't too much sadder than

The tears of a clown

When there's no one around

Say, oh, yeah, baby, baby, baby

Oh, yeah, baby, baby, baby

Now if I appear to be carefree

It's only to camouflage my sadness

And honey, to shield my pride, I try

To cover this hurt with a show of gladness

So don't let my show convince you

That I've been happy since you

Decided to go, oh, I need you so

Look, I'm hurt and I want you to know

Just for others I put on a show, ooh, yeah

There's some sad things known to man

But ain't too much sadder than tears of a clown

When there's no one around

Sitting in Dublin Airport on my lonesome, after saying goodbye to Family and Friends. Feeling a little lonely, but also looking so forward to seeing my two girls back in Sydney on Sunday morning. This was the first image I took during my Ireland trip. Tork Waterfall, in Killarney. The image is very deceiving. This waterfall is huge, and I got this on the first attempt. Hope you like "Tears Of A Clown". Cheers, Mike

For Happy Sliders Sunday - HSS !

In order to understand the evolution of this image, it does require an explanation.

When foolin' around with my macro lens, I noticed a hole in my jeans where the denim was unraveling at the knee.

I took a shot of it and then quite naturally, one thing led to another.

The Original and Interim images have been posted to the succeeding comment sections below.

The resulting sound was very interesting.

The title "The Sound of Fraying" made me think of "The Sound of Silence". Both have five (5) syllables.

Some guys have all the luck

Some guys have all the pain

Some guys get all the breaks

Some guys do nothing but complain

Alone in a crowd on a bus after working, I'm dreaming

The guy next to me has a girl in his arms, my arms are empty

How does it feel when the girl next to you says she loves you?

Seems so unfair when there's love everywhere but there's none for me

Some guys have all the luck

Some guys have all the pain

Some guys get all the breaks

Some guys do nothing but complain

Woo woo woo

Woo woo woo

Someone to take on a walk by the lake Lord, let it be me

Someone who's shy, someone who'd cry at sad movies

I know I would die if I ever found out she was foolin' me

You're just a dream, and as real as it seems, I ain't that lucky

happy new year - this is me.

Straight out of the camera. No croppin' - no foolin'

Of course, I hardly ever seem to do any processing. My software choices are limited so this wasn't much of a stretch for me.

The hard part was knowing that the first picture would be the one I used. I'm used to taking a few dozen and picking the one I like best. Luckily, I liked this one.

'Tis Mondyay! Mondyay is here! The world rejoices. Holidays are thrown. Boys propose to girls they have admired from afar. Birds sing. Elephants trumpet. Kangaroos hop. That kid who pushed you over in the mud and called you names when you were seven rings up to apologise. Your parents send an email to let you know that Santa not existing? A lie. Really. Flowers look pinky and purply and glowy in the sun. Someone invents a never-ending fresh pot of coffee. Almond croissants are declared mandatory and free for every person at breakfast. Spam disappears. Pixar release a new movie every day forever and they stay just as good as they are now. Canon realise they made a clerical error and send me every L lens. And take them away from everyone else. I speak in airs as fresh as Shakespeare could pen / And bringeth all the goodneressness as and when. You know, that sort of thing. It is Mondyay, after all. Anything could happen!

Bigger things happening.
