Manufacturer: VOLVO
Type: PV36 Carioca
Engine: 3670cc straight-6
Power: 84 pk/hp
Speed: 90 km/h
Production time: 1935 - 1938
Production outlet: 500
Curb weight: 1660 kg
Special:
- Only 25 survivors.
- With optional 2 individual front seats instead of a bench.
- 3 speed manual gearbox, rear wheel drive.
- Designed by Ivan Örnberg, a headstrong and versatile engineer, who came to VOLVO in 1931 from the Hupp Motor Co. in Detroit.
- At around 1930 , aerodynamics and streamlined vehicles engaged thinkers and engineers. However, no car manufacturer dared to put anything in production until Hupmobile (Hupmobile Aerodynamic in 1934) and Chrysler Corp. (Chrysler Airflow and it's chaeper sister car DeSoto Airflow in 1934) dit it.
- The idea was to cut fuel consumption and prevent the creation of swirling road dust by using a streamline body with a fully covered underside.
- The PV36 had independent front suspension, with the front wheels moving independently of each other during vertical movements.
- "Carioca" was not the original name, but a nickname. It was a dance in the Hollywood motion picture "Flying down to Rio" (1933) with Ginger Rogers and Fred Astaire.
- "Carioca" is the official nickname for a native RIO citizen.
- For VOLVO "Carioca" was a flirt with the Brazilian market. VOLVO's export to Brazil started in 1933.
- The PV36 was too expensive and only sold to people like company executives, industrials, businessmen, lawyers, doctors, etc. AND 18 cars were bought by the Swedish police.

American dancer and actor Fred Astaire (1899-1987) was a unique dancer with his top hat and tails, his uncanny sense of rhythm, perfectionism, and innovation. He began his highly successful partnership with Ginger Rogers in Flying Down to Rio (1933). They danced together in 10 musicals in which he made all song and dance routines integral to the plotlines. Another innovation was that a closely tracking dolly camera filmed his dance routines in as few shots as possible.
Mexican and American actress Dolores del Río (1905–1983) was a Hollywood star in the 1920s and 1930s, and one of the most important female actresses of the Golden Age of Mexican cinema in the 1940s and 1950s. Del Río was the first major Latin cross-over star in Hollywood and was considered one of the most beautiful faces that have emerged in Hollywood cinema. She also appeared in several European films.

The Doctor is Out. Home of Oprah's favorite beady-eyed, baldy, blowhard, Dr. Phil McGraw. The Doctor is out (of it) . Not a fan!

Stage 30 erected 1930 for RKO
Now occupied by Phil McGraw (Dr. Phil) next door is son Jay, on Stage 29, with The Doctors.
Back in the tram we wiz through the Paramount/RKO sound stages, old and new at a break neck speed safe from a glimpse of any active productions. We stop to see Dr Phil's, the younger, to wander through the Doctors set, and historic Stage 20 housing Nickelodeon's Nicky, Ricky, Dicky & Dawn. No picture's allowed!

from FLYING DOWN TO RIO, RKO (1933)
One of the first classics in my collection, a beautiful example of '30s deco art. Found in a bargain bin in the sheet music department of the J. H. Troup music store on Market Square in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. The price tells us this is a later reissue edition but the cover art is the same.
I initially had the bad habit of writing my name on some sheet music covers, as many people UNfortunately also did. (See bottom right). I quickly got over this AWFUL trait as the compulsive collecting bug kicked in.
RIO is one of the great musicals and scores of the 1930s. There are only four songs (all listed) but they are all excellent. Two, this and "Carioca," became popular standards.
Ken Russell parodied the aerial finale in his BOYFRIEND.
The songwriter, Bobby Troup ("Soute 66") was related to the Harrisburg Troups.
There was also a Troup store in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. The buildings which housed both stores are still standing.
The Harrisburg store was my first exposure to a great record department. There were actually TWO, a classical section on the main floor, and a larger Pop department in the basement.
I also took my first piano lessons here in the second floor piano studios. The studio where I studied was in the front of the building overlooking Market Square.

RKO musical FLYING DOWN TO RIO (1933)
Fred and Ginger had secondary leads. Here Astaire is seen with Delores del Rio who was actually the love interest of Gene Raymond in the film. RIO produced several classic songs including "Carioca" and this sensual tango.

Gene Raymond (1908-1998) was a blond, husky, handsome actor, who had his greatest popularity in the 1930s and early 1940s. He was married to Jeanette MacDonald, with whom he made Smilin' Through (1941).
Brazilian singer and actor Raul Roulien (1905-20000) worked briefly in Hollywood in the waning days of the 'Latin Lover' craze. Raul began recording in 1928 and emigrated to the U.S. in 1931, signing with 20th Century Fox. He appeared in Spanish-language versions shot for the export market. He also co-starred in the first Fred Astaire/Ginger Rogers musical Flying Down to Rio (1933) as part of a romantic triangle with Gene Raymond and Dolores Del Río.

This romantic Musical Comedy was just right for Fred Astair and his dancing partner Ginger Rogers that also stared Dolores del Rio. This was their first film together that was to be the start of a series.
