Based on the famous 1931 UK cornish racing class design of boat the Looe Redwing is designed to get ordinary folk out sailing boats.

This is the inspiration behind this new boat in sl

Its an uncomplex, cheap, simple to use, and a fun basic boat that can seats a few friends and can be raced too :)

QUICK START INSTRUCTIONS:

-------------------------------

1) To start sailing right away, say "raise".

2) To steer left and right, use the left/right arrow keys or the 'a' and 'd' keys (when not in chat mode).

4) To move the sail in or out, use the up/down arrow keys or the 'w' and 's' keys (when not in chat mode).

5) To come to a full stop, say "moor".

6) Type /12 sprayon or /12 sprayoff for bow spray effects and sound effects

7) There is one crew ball near the brass winch on the portside that is animated you can rez a rope for that person to improve the look of the sailor - all poseballs can be hidden with the 'show' or 'hide' command.

8) The crew rope (they hold) can be rezzed with the 'crewropeon' or 'crewropeoff' command.

9) To Enter mouselook - like you are really sailing it - press the 'm' key (when not in chat mode) - and escape a couple of time to return.

10) Page Up and Page Down keys rasie and lower the Foresail. (see a more detailed explanation below).

KEY CONTROLS:

----------------

- Use the left and right arrow keys (or 'a' and 'd') to steer the boat.

- Use the forward and backward arrow keys (or 'w' and 's') to "sheet" (i.e., pull the mainsheet (i.e., the rope) that pulls the mainsail in and out.

- Use the Page Up and Page Down keys to raise and lower the foresail.

COMMANDS:

"raise" -- raise the mainsail and begin sailing.

"lower" -- lower the mainsail and stop sailing. Note that the boat will continue to drift.

"moor" -- reset the boat to non-physical state.

"sheet X" -- sheets in or out the mainsail by X degrees ("sheet -5" will pull the sail in by 5 degrees).

"id#XX" -- displays a two-digit number between 00 and 99 to your boats id"id#05").

"knots" -- changes speed units on the HUD to knots (nautical miles per hour).

FORESAIL

I have attempted to make the use of this as untechnical as possible for newbies

The Foresail is not just for show it (when you press the page up key) it will raise and set both sails to a perfect fastest point of sail reach - 45 degrees - however this will also penalty you if you raise it when tacking (into the wind) as it will temporarily change your main sail setting and slow you down whilst you reset you sail trim once more - so use this wisely - the same applies when reaching - if you lower the sail when reaching (fastest point of sail) you will be slowed slightly - making those around you with foresails slightly faster (assuming they have their wind and sheet settings set correctly of course ;) as there is a speed tweak included when you raise the foresail when reaching but not when tacking

There is no right or wrong way to use this sail, some may want to leave it up all the time as its more work to adjust it, whereas others may prefer a slightly improved up and downwind performance by raising and lowering it, its entirely up to you and just a bit of fun to make the sailing experience that much more realistic

SAIL NUMBERS

Option 1) As a startline recognises your id anyway many people do not bother with a number unless they are in competitions just id you board as shown below

Option 2) I suggest you use the enclosed sail prim texture - file - save texture to your hard drive - then remove any background colour so it is transparent around the sail then place a white number on that in an image edition program - save as a .png to retain the alpha section parts and reupload it - add it to the sail prim in the same way as you would tako sails.

Option 3) Use the supplied spaces on the top of this boat - use view - highlight transparent to see it (4 small transparent prim boxs) and you can drag you official SLSF number to that prim each side - voila you have a number on your boat failry easily.

Option4) do nothing the lines will still id your avatar name

Hud

~~~~

The Hud (or that little numeric readout that appears when you first rasie your sail) at first appears complex - all your need concern yourself with its the sheet angle and wind angle - oh and watch the wind vane especially with SLWind as thats often very 'flukey' and changes a lot.

If the wind is blowing at right angles to your boat set your sail at 45 degrees this is called reaching this is the fastest speed. Remember SHEET HALF THE WIND ANGLE.

If the wind is blowing towards you then the sail will act like a flag so you must sail at a slight angle into to wind or zig-zag - called tacking - set the sail at approx 5-10 degrees When you rez the boat the default setting is 5 degrees so 'close hauled'

If the wind is blowing from behind you then set the sail at 90 degress - this is called running - most people broad reach in high winds though as this is a more downwind version of reaching as running is far too slow - think downwind zig-zagging.

This is more than enough to start you off , experienced sailors will probably have mind mapped the sailing courses already - so for them it will be far easier to work all this all out.

Remember to avoid luffing (that word sounds exactly like it is) into the wind where the wind vane is in direct alignment to the sail and pointing towards you as you will come to a standstill - just like a flag.

Looking for somewhere to take it to sail then you could do a lot worse than the following recommendations try Hollywood, Boogdolt, Nantucket Yacht Club, Mowry Bay, Sailors Cove or Weston Marina.

WIND DIR: direction wind is coming FROM, relative to bow, measured CCW.

SHEET ANGLE: maximum allowed angle of sail, set by the mainsheet.

SAIL ANGLE: actual angle of sail (or boom) relative to centerline, measured CCW.

WIND SPEED: wind speed.

BOAT SPEED: true speed of the boat over the ground.

Race ID

~~~~~~

The SLSF Startlines in SL will give your board something called RACEWIND - this is a constant and very realistic wind speed and not flukey like the normal wind in SL - if you do not rez near a startline this will still sail - but nowhere near as much fun or as fast :)

If you own land or have rezzing rights somewhere then you could do worse than pop over to Kanker Greenacres sim parcel and buy a SLSF Sailboat Race-in-a-Box for 100L It offers you the racewind windsetter and starline that will mean you have the cool adjustable wind rather than the SL Wind to sail with ;) :)))

You can create you own unique Race id at slsailing.org.

"id#X" X meaning a number -- sets your race avatar name recongition at SLSF Startlines the default of id1 should be changed to your own number to be identified at race lines. No need for the letters.

id#XX - example say you want an id of 21 type id#21 and it will automatically id your board to being number 21 in ?

the race :)

ID Sail Number

To place your race id above your sail i have provided you with an image explaining how to do this - this avoids scripted letters and as you will only identify yourself once there is no need to change it afterwards'

1. Go to slsailing.org - Registry.

2. Rez your boat

3. Right click - edit - your boart

4. Select VIEW - HIGHLIGHT TRANSPARENT - so you can now see the 3 sail number boxes

5. Go to your boat folder in your inverntory and find the list of sail numbers there - they are listed ?

1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,0 - click and drag your number onto the face of one of the boxes - do this for both sides of the sail until you are happy with the arrangement.

6. Uncheck 'view transparent' repaet to id a few boats :) and take your boat back into your inventory rememberto also id your board accordingly with the id#000 or whatever your numberhappens to be see the section here on race id above.

If you do not have a number then use the transparent texture provided instead :)

CHANGING THE CAMERA SETTING:

-----------------------------------

Inside the Boats's inventory, you'll find a script called "Camera." You can modify the code in this script to change the camera position and the direction it's pointing (relative to the boat). Note that the new camera angle and position will only take effect after you resit.

CUSTOMIZING THE SAIL, BOAT, AND FORESAIL TEXTURES:

--------------------------------------------------------------

- There is a texture includeded a file called 'Redwing Sail Moddable' use this as a template for the sail, open it then select File, Save texture as and it will be saved to your PC or Mac

then simply remove any background around the sail, save it as a .PNG format (this will retain the alpha (transparent areas) and you can place your own white saili numbers on the sail.

- If your design includes text or directional images, you will need to make one version for the right side of the sail, and a version with a mirror image of the text or design for the left side.

- After uploading the tga/png files, rename the texture for the right side of the sail "sail_raised_right" and for the left "sail_raised_left". You may also make a texture for the furled sail -- call it "sail_furled".

- Edit your Redwing, check the "Edit linked parts" box, and click on the sail prim. Then drag your new sail textures into the sail prim's inventory. They will be automatically detected and displayed.

- Now when you raise and lower the sail, your textures will be used in place of the defaults.

- You can remove the textures from the sail prim's inventory to get rid of them - it will revert to defaults.

- To change the boat hull texture you can make a square bitmap (.bmp,jpg or png) image and upload it - haowever this is a 'sculpted prim and you may find it doesnt look right without a lot of trial and error using the edit texture - select texture section.

THI Hurricane Mk.I

We are very proud to present a model of the Hurricane Mk.I, a legendary defender of Britain. This plane was developed by Sidney Camm of the Hawker Siddeley company, in response to the British Air Ministry specification F.36/34 (modified by F.5/34), for a fighter aircraft built around the new Rolls-Royce engine, then only known as the PV-12, later to become famous as the Merlin. The project started in 1933 and reached production in 1936, making it the first British monoplane fighter. Based on older technology, the Hurricane was already somewhat outdated at the beginning of the war, but still offered performance and reliability. Its simple structure allowed the Hurricane to be repaired in rough conditions. This part-metal, part-wooden plane proved itself in most of the WWII arenas, including 55% of the Nazi airforce loses during the Battle of Britain. More than 14,000 Hurricaes were produced. With its ease of maintenance, wide-set landing gear, and benign flying characteristics, the Hurricane remained in use in theatres of operations where reliability, easy handling and a stable gun platform were more important than performance; typically in roles like ground attack. Later variants of the Hurricane (up to Mk.VII and X) were used in France, Britain, North Africa, Malta, Russia, Singapore, Dutch East Indies and Burma.

The model offered here reflects "Battle of Britain" period - September 1940. The paint scheme of this model belonged to a plane in the 303 Polish RAF Squadron, piloted by Witold Urbanowicz. Urbanowicz was one of the top ten allied fighters from Battle of Britain period, a triple ace with with 17 confirmed wartime kills and 1 probable. He was awarded several decorations, including the Virtuti Militari and Distinguished Flying Cross.

The exquisitely-detailed Second Life model includes the following features:
