This beautiful view from the Monte Carneiro overlook, located on the hill north of Horta, shows the central volcano of Faial Island in the Azores. In the foreground lies the village of Flamengos; nestled in the valley of the same name. Both get their name for the Flemish settlers who arrived in the valley in 1465. The valley has a rich history. In 1597 during one of the Anglo-Spanish Wars; British troops led by Sir Walter Raleigh plundered the area and destroyed many homes and buildings. In 1926 and 1998 destructive earthquakes hit the valley.
In the background; the volcano rises prominently. At its center is a crater that is not visible till one reaches the top and the rim. On the left, the highest peak on the crater's rim, Cabeço Gordo, reaches an elevation of 1,043 meters (3,422 feet).

It is curious that most boats are facing roughly the same direction. Is this a parking lot?

The Flamengos Valley is one of the more fertile and productive sections of Faial Island. It was originally settled by people from Flanders, hence the name.
