One of CL Engel's finest creations, the chalk-white neoclassical Lutheran cathedral presides over Senaatintori (Senate Square). Created to serve as a reminder of God's supremacy, its high flight of stairs is now a popular meeting place. Zinc statues of the twelve apostles guard the city from the roof of the church. In Finland the best rye breads are crust like this, unsweetened and crunchy. May favourite is to toast it and put some fresh vegetables and coconut cheddar cheese as toppings.

It was just a very ordinary walk in the same Helsinki suburb surroundings, still with patches of ice here and there, but sun already was shining warmer and friendlier than a couple of weeks ago. And then behind a turn of the path opened a view over a little bay, and sunlight fell on the tops of last year dropworts in so marvelous angle that all the scene was flooded with light... I deliberately let the flare come into the photo, because it reveals the feeling from that moment like fairies would be dancing in the branches and chasing the winter away. :-)

The island of Katajanokanluoto (Skatakobben) is situated at less than 10 minutes boat ride from Helsinki and open to the public in the summer. Katajanokanluoto is considered a valuable part of Finnish maritime history. Today, this charming island is a restaurant with an environmentally friendly profile and produces its own electricity with solar panels.
