Elbphilharmonie Concert Hall Hamburg, Germany - Herzog & de Meuron architects - 2017
The Elbphilharmonie is the city's concert hall since 2017. It is located on the right bank of the Elbe River, specifically in the HafenCity district. For a long time, it seemed that this magnificent and important building for the city would never be built. Financing it caused considerable headaches for local politicians for several years. Initially, it was estimated that funding would be needed for €77 million. Ultimately, the total cost would rise to a staggering €789 million.

This is Finance Tower, the second tallest building in Belgium.
The tallest building in Belgium is, like this one, in Brussels. It’s called ‘South Tower’ and you can find it right outside the Eurostar terminal.
I didn’t realise while I was taking photos of both of these buildings, spread quite far apart in Brussels, that they were indeed the tallest two in Belgium, so it was nice to learn this fact while writing this post.
Attempting to find out the name of the building above, I went on to Google Maps and retraced the steps I took while I as walking from central Brussels to the Atomium to find the building and figure out what it was. The fact I was there 9 months ago did not make this too easy, and made me wish I had a GPS device for my phone. Once found, I did a quick Google search and that’s when I realised it was the second tallest building.
It was only after my curiosity made me want to know what the tallest building in Belgium was that I found I had also taken photos of it on the same trip.
I seem to gravitate towards tall buildings I guess :)

Church of the Holy Cross (Polish: Kościół św. Krzyża, also Kościół świętokrzyski) is a Roman Catholic place of worship in downtown Warsaw. The main building was constructed between 1679 and 1696. Its main designer was Józef Szymon Bellotti, the royal architect at the Royal Court of Poland. It was financed by abbot Kazimierz Szczuka and the Primate of Poland Michał Stefan Radziejowski. The fasade was relatively modest and reminded of Renaissance fasades of the nearby churches. The two towers surrounding the facade were initially square-cut. Between 1725 and 1737 two late Baroque headpieces by Józef Fontana. The fasade itself was refurbished by Fontana's son, Jakub (in 1756) and ornamented with sculptures by Jan Jerzy Plersch. From 1765 the church was one of the most attended by Polish King Stanisław August Poniatowski. It was also there that the King established the Order of St. Stanisław and bestowed it upon loyal servants annually on May 8. On May 3, 1792, the Polish Diet gathered there on the first anniversary of the May 3rd Constitution. During the Warsaw Uprising of 1794, the stairs leading to the main entrance were destroyed and had to be replaced with new ones designed by Chrystian Piotr Aigner. During the Warsaw Uprising of 1944 the church had been severely damaged. Afterwards it was blown up by the Germans. However, between 1945 and 1953 it had been rebuilt in a simplified architectural form by B. Zborowski. The interior was also reconstructed, however without the baroque polychromies and frescoes. The main altar had been reconstructed between 1960 and 1972.

The St. Sava Temple in Belgrade in Serbia is the largest Orthodox church in the Balkans and one of the ten largest church buildings in the world.
The building of the church structure is being financed exclusively by donations.
The facade is in white marble and granite and by night radiates in an impressive white glow.

In honour of the International Day of Happiness on 20 March 2017, I asked a selection of people to choose an object that makes them happy. I then photographed and interviewed them about these items.
"One of the things that me and my wife Debbie first bonded over was a shared love of Agatha Christie. We decided to buy them all, and had a list we'd cross off on visits to second hand book shops. The last one, an American edition called 'The Golden Ball and Other Stories', we couldn't find anywhere so resorted to eBay.
We could of course have bought them all on Kindle, but there's nothing like having the objects on a bookshelf. It's also nice that there's a history to second hand books, knowing others have read them. And Penguin covers look lovely.
I'm reading them in chronological order; there are around 90. It's interesting comparing the pre-war stories (people with servants in country houses), to the post-war ones (people can no longer can find the staff as the nouveau rich servants have enough money to buy their own houses).
Since we started buying these, Debbie has had problems with her vision, so she is listening to them as audio books."

The Historic Brilliant Suspension Bridge consists of two paired concrete towers supporting massive steel cables from which is suspended a structural steel wood-surfaced deck.
The bridge design and supervision of construction was undertaken by a Vancouver firm while the bridge itself was built entirely by Doukhobor work crews using traditional hand-tools and techniques.
Construction was completed in a remarkable period of only seven months at a cost of $60,000 dollars, approximately 2/3 of which was financed by the Doukhobors and 1/3 by the provincial government.
The bridge served the local traffic needs of the Doukhobor CCUB and later the USCC community as well as other local and regional residents, for over 50 years.
It was closed to both vehicular and pedestrian traffic in 1966 when a new bridge opened and was closed to pedestrians in the 1970's due to safety concerns of the failing deck.

This is a kind of optical illusion. There is nothing in common between the two buildings other than they are both upright. They are not next to each other and they don't slope upwards at the same angle.

Boston, officially the City of Boston, is the capital and most populous city in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts in the United States. The city serves as the cultural and financial center of the New England region of the Northeastern United States. It has an area of 48.4 sq mi (125 km2) and a population of 675,647 as of the 2020 census, making it the third-largest city in the Northeast after New York City and Philadelphia. The Greater Boston metropolitan statistical area, including and surrounding the city, is the largest in New England and eleventh-largest in the country.
Boston was founded on the Shawmut Peninsula in 1630 by Puritan settlers. The city was named after Boston, Lincolnshire, England. During the American Revolution, Boston was home to several events that proved central to the revolution and subsequent Revolutionary War, including the Boston Massacre (1770), the Boston Tea Party (1773), Paul Revere's Midnight Ride (1775), the Battle of Bunker Hill (1775), and the Siege of Boston (1775–1776). Following American independence from Great Britain, the city continued to play an important role as a port, manufacturing hub, and center for education and culture.
The city expanded significantly beyond the original peninsula by filling in land and annexing neighboring towns. It now attracts many tourists, with Faneuil Hall alone drawing more than 20 million visitors per year. Boston's many firsts include the United States' first public park (Boston Common, 1634), the first public school (Boston Latin School, 1635), and the first subway system (Tremont Street subway, 1897).
Since the nation's founding, Boston has been a national leader in higher education and research. Boston University and Northeastern University are both located within the city, with Boston College located in nearby Chestnut Hill, Massachusetts. Two of the world's most prestigious and consistently highly ranked universities, Harvard University (the nation's oldest university) and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, are both located in neighboring Cambridge, Massachusetts.
Boston has emerged as the largest biotechnology hub in the world. The city is also a national leader in scientific research, law, medicine, engineering, and business. With nearly 5,000 startup companies, the city is considered a global pioneer in innovation and entrepreneurship, and more recently in artificial intelligence. Boston's economy also includes finance, professional and business services, information technology, and government activities. Households in the city claim the highest average rate of philanthropy in the United States. Furthermore, Boston's businesses and institutions rank among the top in the country overall for environmental sustainability and new investment.

"There is great gain in godliness with contentment; for we brought nothing into the world, and we cannot take anything out of the world; but if we have food and clothing, with these we shall be content. But those who desire to be rich fall into temptation, into a snare, into many senseless and hurtful desires that plunge men into ruin and destruction. For the love of money is the root of all evils; it is through this craving that some have wandered away from the faith and pierced their hearts with many pangs. "
- 1 Timothy 6:6-10.
