Family : Moraceae

Central Queensland to Southern NSW.

Out in the open Ficus macrophylla has a relatively compact rounded crown but in rainforest situation it can reach an enormous size,up to 50m high and a stem diameter of up to 240cm. While it can be grown directly in the ground it often starts its life high up in the canopy gradually enmeshing the host as its roots follow the host tree to the ground.

It has glossy lustrous leaves and develops massive flanged and irregularly wide buttresses to support its huge volume in shallow, sometimes waterlogged, soils.

The fruit varies with maturity from green through orange to purple when ripe and is edible but quite dry to taste. The fruit can appear at any time but generally Feb-May.

Protaras is a predominantly tourist resort which comes under the administrative jurisdiction of Paralimni Municipality in Cyprus.

Protaras is the tourist area of Paralimni , one of the most beautiful areas on the island of Cyprus. Protaras is an iconic bay with clear waters and golden beaches.

Kappari is located between Protaras and Paralimni. Although smaller than the neighboring areas of Protaras and Pernera, it has become a popular destination.

Supposedly in 1876, a visiting seaman gave a seedling of this tree to a girl in Santa Barbara. A year later, he friend replanted it in it's current location - the corner of Chapala and Montecito.

It is now one of the largest of its species (Ficus macrophyllia) in the United States. It is a historic landmark and is on the California Register of Big Trees. It averages 80' in height, 176' in average crown spread and over 40' in diameter.

It is an awesome sight!

I had never noticed the shape of young fig leaves before.

The fig tree in our garden is now so tall it gives shelter from the sun. Or the rain.

jack with insane austrailian fig tree. apparently u plant it it in the upper branches of any tree and it grows downwards until it strangles the plant at the roots. pretty cool

I recently started a quilt for our bed. I'll be lucky to be finished by next Christmas. For this Christmas, I made pillowcases to match the quilt using this tutorial.

Cut Against Their Will -

Using a different route to enter the forest, I passed a tall Banyan tree and a figure darts behind the curtain of aerial roots. Blame it on my prying nature, I went to investigate and a man was at the back hacking with his cleaver. He saw me approaching and quickly put the blade back in a plastic bag. I asked politely what he was doing and he replied in halting English, the infusion of bark shavings is good for preventing gum disease. In his homeland he adds, the astringent secretion strengthens the teeth and they also chew the bark strips. I stare at the gaping wound, it looked sore without the skin. I advise the man there are alternative ways to maintain oral health but it is hard, because traditional practices are deep-rooted. What would you do if you see someone engraving a tree?

Day 2/5 – day two of the Black and White Challenge. “Fig Foot” is the name I gave to this very old fig tree (Ficus natalensis) near Figtree Lodge, the original homestead at Tala in KwaZulu-Natal. The fig has many traditional medicinal uses and is prime habitat for bats. The picture was made with a 20-35mm zoom lens near the wide end. Quite Tolkienesque…
