On the recommendation of some people we met in April at the Exchange Place Garden Fair, Ruth and I drove up to Meadowview, Virginia, in May to dine at The Harvest Table Restaurant. Meadowview is just north of Abingdon, Virginia, and about 130 miles north of our home in Knoxville. Why drive all this way for a restaurant?
The Harvest Table Restaurant (located in the blue building portion of the farmers' guild) offers a seasonal menu that is tied to local harvests. If it's not growing in the region, they don't serve it (and that includes lemon wedges for your tea). They do make a few exceptions for cola and coffee on the menu (but they also offer a locally bottled regional cola).
In some casual discussions around Knoxville, we had heard the usual "it can't be done" arguments for building a successful restaurant around a local menu. We made the 260-mile round trip to see it being done quite well.
We were not disappointed and we enjoyed shopping in the adjacent farmers' guild general store (red building) where we bought some local sausage and some local flax flour (excellent in our bread making).

The town of Meadowview, population approximately 2,000 people (give or take), is home to one of our new favorite places in the world: the Meadowview Farmers' Guild and Harvest Table Restaurant.
We intend to study it's success deeper to see how it can be replicated in our corner of Appalachia.

Callie is a statuesque Hanoverian mare — a retired jumper and broodmare with a heart as big as her stride. Now in her golden years, she lives with arthritis, but that doesn’t stop her from stealing hearts (and cookies). Sweet and sassy, Callie has a special gift: during maternity photoshoots, she lovingly kisses expectant bellies as if offering her blessing — a quiet reminder of her own legacy and mothering spirit. Callie let will let anyone climb up ontop of her, and is super safe, with ‘more woah than go’. There’s something special about giving care to a old horse, who has given their life in service for humans.
