Dies Bild entstand auf der Fahre von Boganes weiter Richtung Narvik. Im Hintergrund erkennt man die Ofoten, weiter westlich schliesen sich dann die Lofoten an.
Die Fraueninsel ist nach der Herreninsel die zweitgrößte der drei Inseln im Chiemsee. Auf der 15,5 ha großen und autofreien Fraueninsel wohnen in etwa 50 Häusern beständig um die 300 Einwohner. Diese Siedlung auf der Insel bildet den Ort Frauenchiemsee, weswegen im Sprachgebrauch die beiden Begriffe Fraueninsel und Frauenchiemsee oft synonym verwendet werden.
Um die Insel herum führt ein etwa 1,5 km langer Fußweg. Das Fahrradfahren ist auf der Insel nicht gestattet. Nur in der Zeit von sieben bis zwölf Uhr dürfen Lieferfahrzeuge vereinzelt auf die Insel. Die Insel ist das ganze Jahr über mit dem Linienschiff der Chiemsee-Schifffahrt zu erreichen.
Das Kloster Frauenwörth prägt den Charakter von Frauenchiemsee, es ist Wallfahrtsort für die selige Irmengard, die Schutzpatronin des Chiemgaus.
782 gründete Herzog Tassilo III. von Bayern das Kloster. Nach den Zerstörungen der Ungarneinfälle erlebte es zwischen dem 11. und dem 15. Jahrhundert eine Blütezeit. 1728 und 1732 wurden die Klostergebäude neu erbaut. Im Zuge der Säkularisation hob man das Kloster von 1803 bis 1835 auf, jedoch bestand der Konvent fort. 1836 errichtete König Ludwig I. von Bayern für die Benediktinerinnen das Kloster neu.
Fraueninsel is the second largest of the three islands in Lake Chiemsee after Herreninsel. On the 15.5 hectares large and car-free Fraueninsel live in about 50 houses constantly around 300 inhabitants. This settlement on the island forms the village Frauenchiemsee, which is why the two terms Fraueninsel and Frauenchiemsee are often used synonymously.
Around the island leads an approximately 1.5 km long footpath. Bicycling is not permitted on the island. Delivery vehicles are only allowed on the island sporadically between the hours of seven and twelve. The island can be reached all year round by the Chiemsee-Schifffahrt scheduled boat service.
The Frauenwörth monastery shapes the character of Frauenchiemsee; it is a place of pilgrimage for Blessed Irmengard, the patron saint of Chiemgau.
In 782 Duke Tassilo III of Bavaria founded the monastery. After the destruction of the Hungarian invasions, it flourished between the 11th and 15th centuries. In 1728 and 1732 the monastery buildings were rebuilt. In the course of secularization the monastery was abolished from 1803 to 1835, but the convent continued to exist. In 1836 King Ludwig I of Bavaria rebuilt the monastery for the Benedictine nuns.
