There are a lot of these old fallout shelter signs still around New York. Most of them are actually in worse shape than this one - whether they be rusted through, generally dirty, etc. I like the lines in this shot, both from the sign and from the bricks.
Sadly, I'm not sure exactly where I took this photo, though it was somewhere on the Upper East Side between 2nd Ave and the East River and between 86th and 77th Streets.
Another view of the fallout shelter in a friend's basement. Unfortunately the cinderblock room is very musty and he plans to fill it in, so I suggested growing mushrooms in there. His response? "I hate mushrooms!"
I think it's an awesome little time capsule that should be preserved.
