The Vault-Tec terminal in the Citadel lists Vault 76 as a “control” vault, with 500 occupants. The vault was designed to open 20 years after a nuclear war, and was among the seventeen known control vaults, meaning that it was used as a baseline to compare to experimental vaults. It is also mentioned in one of the alien captive recorded logs (no.13) recorded by Giles Wolstencroft, a Vault-Tec official who was abducted while inspecting the vault’s construction site. In Fallout 4, the newsreader in the prologue mentions Vault 76 debuting in 2076 in honor of America’s tercentenary when discussing Vault-Tec’s plans to expand.
Vault 76 is mentioned in Fallout 3 and its add-on Mothership Zeta, and Fallout 4.

Vault 76 is one of the Vaults constructed by the Vault-Tec Corporation. It is located in the area of Washington, D.C.[1]
Background
Vault 76 was one of the seventeen control Vaults within the Vault experiment. It was designed to house five hundred people and automatically open after twenty years, at which point the residents would be evicted and studied in comparison to the other experiments.[2]
Construction began in February of 2065 and ended in October of 2069. The Vault had LightLife Geo-Thermal for its primary power supply, and General Atomics Nuclear Power as a secondary power supply. Its computer control system was Brainpower 4.[3] At some point during construction, Giles Wolstencroft, Vault-Tec’s Assistant Chief Executive Officer, was abducted by extra terrestrials while inspecting the site.[4]
In 2076, the Vault was debuted by Vault-Tec in celebration of America’s Tercentenary.[5]
