Female American Pronghorn (Antilocapra americana) on antelope island, September 23, 2018. By consuming the grass, pronghorn maintain the continual growth of grass and help prevent wildfire and the proliferation of one plant species over others. This creates a delicate balance between consumer and producer. For example if pronghorn became overpopulated, the grass would be decimated, cause severe erosion, and leave less food for other species. So the pronghorn becomes an essential part of the ecosystem in the area.
