Algae is a polyphyletic group of photosynthetic eukaryotes. Growth blooms of the genus Microthamnion of the family Microthamniaceae are shown in this picture. They were identifiable under a microscope. These blooms were found at Beus Pond, near Weber State University in Ogden, UT. This is a popular spot to visit with many mallards, Anas platyrhynchos, (one visible in the distance) often found on site. Algae form a base of the food chain in their aquatic environments. Overgrowth in areas such as this can cause blooms which are densely populated enough to asphyxiate other lifeforms. If so disruptive of the ecological food web of this ecosystem, it is easy to wonder what might cause this overgrowth.
Algal blooms are most often caused in response to pollutants, laden with phosphorus and nitrogen, which can cause eutrophication that in turn accelerates algal growth. This is seen in runoff from locally fertilized fields.
