Dr Lee-Ellen Strawn's World Religions and Contemporary Issues class has read and discussed Shusaku Endo's novel Silence. It is about Portuguese Jesuit priests who enter Japan during the 17th century and witness the martyrdom of Japanese Christians who refuse to renounce their faith. In turn, the priests are faced with whether to apostatize themselves in order to save other Japanese Christians. The novel raises the question of what is faith and the role of doubt in faith, and the class looks to parallel situations in the world today. Photography by Glenn Minshall.
