Pirae à l'est ;

Papeete (pronounced in French: /pa.pe.e.te/; in Tahitian: Pape’ete, /pa.pe.ʔe.te/) is a commune and the capital of French Polynesia, located on the island of Tahiti. The Papeete-Faaa conurbation is the second largest French-speaking city in Oceania after Nouméa.

As the capital of an overseas collectivity, it houses its main institutions, such as the High Commission, the Government of French Polynesia with its president, the Assembly of French Polynesia, and the Economic, Social and Cultural Council.

It also contains major infrastructure for French Polynesia, such as the Port of Papeete, fuel depots, the territorial hospital, private clinics, and most of the industrial and economic infrastructure, as well as banking and financial institutions.

The municipality is located in the northwest of Tahiti, the main island of the Society Islands archipelago, in the Pacific Ocean.

Papeete is bordered by the municipalities of:

Pirae to the east;

Faaa to the west.

The city center is accessible via the coastal road, which circles Tahiti, from Faaa and Mahina. Several roads lead from Papeete to the island's interior, passing through the valleys, including the Fautaua Valley road and the Fautaua-Titioro road.
