Fragments of reality...

It's been such an interesting year, a very sad year, a year of happy things, and a year of discovery. Just like any other year i suppose, the best thing for me is that i discovered flickr and from just putting in some family shots for close friends to see i am now the owner of my lovely Nikon, looking at the world through the camera lens which makes it a more beautiful place, and wealthier in that i have met some amazing people who have encouraged me all the way. Thank you all - its been a great journey. I will be away now for 3 weeks in Florida and will take some pictures which i hope you will come over and see when i come back. HAPPY SNAPPING ALL. Military train D-FPES-02 crosses the Illinois River at Pearl, IL. Thanks for the heads up Mr. Larabee!

Snowy military vehicles roll out of Laddonia siding in Eastern MO aboard KCS D-FPES-31. The Roodhouse Local L-RH101-03 pauses briefly on the Roodhouse Sub Main. Once the military train clears the East end of the siding, the crew will clear part of their track warrant, so the Local can shove out and pull back into the siding to service the POET Bioprocessing Ethanol Plant before heading back East for their home base on the other side of the Mississippi River in Illinois.

After making the half mile walk across the sand at Mentor Headlands park to be in position for when the CSL Frontenac departed, I started hearing NS switching on the radio, very close by. I guessed that nothing was going to happen with the Frontenac for a couple of hours and that I was hearing local C64 switch the LyondellBassel plant in Fairport Harbor. So I took the chance of not shooting anything and trekked back through the sand and around the 5 mile drive to get on the other side of the river. The reward was that they were still switching the plant where they manufacture resins for wiring insulation. I'm not sure if I compete with them or buy their products. This is at the end of a short segment of the B&O line to Fairport Harbor that is accessed by running over the former Fairport, Painesville, and Eastern from the connection with the former NKP at Perry. The C64 local runs out of Conneaut. I've wanted to catch the local here but never knew when they came to town. And I still got back across the river way before the Frontenac left.

KCS Train D-FPES-31 is down to ten miles per hour passing the former Chicago & Alton Depot as it prepares to cross the roughly 120-year-old Mississippi River Swing Bridge. After a meet with the L-RH101-03 (The Roodhouse Local) at Laddonia, the Eastbound military special, bound for CSX at Rose Lake and eventually delivery to the Fort Drum Base, will have a straight shot to Godfrey and UP Trackage rights.

More on the Louisiana Depot... It was constructed in 1907 by The Chicago & Alton Railroad and ceased operations to passenger rail service in 1960. The building closed in 1973 and since then has been privately owned. There are rumblings of relocating it out of a flood-prone area to restore and preserve the building.

Out to the east of Cleveland there used to be the Fairport Painesville and Eastern that ran between Fairport Harbor where they connected with the Baltimore and Ohio and Perry where they connected with the Norfolk and Western. For a short time the railroad continued east of Perry but that had been cut back in the 40's when the planned traffic never materialized. The biggest customer was a Diamond Alkali plant in Fairport Harbor but they were a busy little outfit with several other online industries. Here we see a stone train crossing the B&O coal yard lead in Fairport Harbor. This would have been Good Friday 1968. That was one of the few weekdays that my Dad and his cousin were both off on the same day and they would pack up sons and venture a little farther from home. These 2 S2's were originally bought by the FP&E in the late 40's. There's a very thorough history of the FP&E online accessible with a simple search. Today there is a stub end branch in Fairport Harbor operated by NS to serve one customer.
