Flying starts from the ground. The more grounded you are, the higher you fly.

continuing with the rooftop series from my trip to India last year.
Taken on the same day as my previous photo, there were so many birds out and about after sunrise, it was fun.
hope you've had a flying start to the new year :)
Meh, yet another Great Egret, Ardea alba, in flight against an overcast sky, no better than several I have already posted. However, it’s very encouraging as a proof of concept, because I got it with my brand new Fujifilm X-T5 on my first outing.
Manual exposure; one frame from a 7fps burst; following the subject at 300mm; continuous back button autofocus set for bird tracking; saved as RAW and HEIF on UHS-II cards; uploaded to the Cloud with my old SD card adapter, processed from HEIF in Photos on iPad; cropped from 40MP to 3, for a 6000mm full-frame equivalent reach.
Several questions remain to be answered, haven’t got a slick workflow. Had to sit on a park bench for a while and search the manual on my phone to figure out how to invoke burst mode. 😜

The first bird that I saw when I got off the plane at the Nome airport was this white wagtail. I'd be willing to bet a couple bucks that the Nome airport is the only airport in North America where that would happen. This bird certainly got the Nome trip off to a flying start. White wagtails are a common nesting species across Eurasia but they only have a toehold as a nesting species in North America along the northwest fringe of Alaska. Surprisingly, white wagtails like to nest in crevices in old buildings here around Nome.

A night time shot of the Hotel Mont Park's facade, located in the "Rincón de Loix" of Benidorm (Alicante, Spain) showing a very attractive play of rhythmic patterns with interesting tonal contrasts, enhanced by the night lighting.
It was a sort of exercise in the form of personal challenge, proposing myself achieving a trilogy of night photographs from the window of the apartment with my 70-200 zoom lens. The first was this shown, the two others will follow soon ;-)

Part of the motor car parade at Old Warden before flying started at the Military Pageant . There were a number of vehicles of all sorts civilian and military - this one just struck me as it carried a right mixed bunch of characters .
I think this is a Sunbeam .
Formula DE is a board game that recreates formula 1 racing.
The cars' top speeds are limited by having to end a certain number of turns in each curve of the racetrack. This can be tricky, because although players can regulate their speeds by choosing which gear to be in and each gear allows a certain range of movement, the exact amount is determined randomly.
The game has seven dice. There are six colored dice (d4, d6, d8, d12, d20, and d30) that are used to simulate specific gears, and a black d20 used for collisions, and other course events.
Each of the dice represents a gear shift. The d4 is used for 1st gear, the d6 for 2nd gear and so on. Each dice has a series of numbers representing the number of spaces the F1 cars move.
The black die is a d20 and used for determining collisions, engine wear during fifth and sixth gears, pit stop speed, pole position, and whether or not at the beginning of the first lap you stalled, or had a flying start. If you are playing with the advanced rules, you can set up weather conditions with the black die.
On any given player's turn, he is required to choose which gear he wants his car to be in. The chosen gear may be only one higher than the previous turn's gear, or may be one lower with no penalty; he may also select a gear two, three, or four lower but this "gear crashing" causes damage to several car systems depending on how many gears were skipped. Having selected a gear, the player must roll the appropriate dice for that gear. The coloured dice vary not only in number of sides but also in the range of numbers represented (they are not traditionally numbered dice). The player must then move his car a number of spaces equal to the roll.

I really enjoyed watching the 1 mile challenge today, lots of family interaction but mostly for seeing the little ones giving it biftas for the finish line. Taken at the Albert dock Liverpool as part of the Rock n roll series.

Thanks to my partner Kris for being the epic human you are, and this time in front of the camera! These images were shot near Tofino on Vancouver Island - we were walking along the beach for hours, actually looking for a particular tree stump I wanted to shoot with (only I would spend hours looking for the perfect stump ), when we came across this super cinematic scene where the tide had gone out to reveal a wide, reflective expanse of sand with fog sweeping across it. My dream conditions! I sent Kris out running to strike a few poses before the conditions changed at all, and we came away with these photos - some of my personal favourites of the year. 😊
the year has certainly got off to a flying start ,i initially thought this was a stoat ,but as can be seen its a adult weasel escaping the surge tide today .
Paws In The Park 2008 got off to a flying start today, with a practice day in the Dash 'n' Splash pool. All the regular high flyers were there - Rupert, Cody and Dash - along with a host of other potential stars - including Jasper, pictured above! Action continues tomorrow and Sunday - read more about Paws In The Park at www.pawsinthepark.net/. See more images like this at www.momofoto.co.uk

20 February 2021: In the week to 16 February on average 1886 people tested positive each day in Belgium. The figure is down 5% on the week. In the same period 118 patients with Covid were hospitalised and 39 fatalities a day were linked to Covid. The figures are down respectively 7% and 4% on the week. Whilst the decrease of the 7-days rolling average for the key indicators continues to decrease, figures from the past few days indicate that we can expect them to raise again in the days to come. Meaning, the plateau phase in the corona figures continues and it will take patience and persistence before we’ll get to the threshold of 800 infections per day. Yesterday, I took a quick peek at the vaccination center in Ghent that opened its doors for first-line care providers such as general practitioners, dentists and home care nurses. The picture confirms that we’re not off to a flying start. The lack of available vaccine doses made it more of a symbolic kick-off. – Flanders Expo, Ghent, Belgium.
The 2020 season of regular steam-hauled passenger services on the Wolsztyn-Leszno route kicked off to a flying start on Monday 20th January as freshly-painted Ol49-59 stormed away from Wolsztyn working the 05:34 service to Leszno. The locals waiting at the level crossing were visibly delighted to witness this spectacle recommencing once more after the mid-winter break. Already the early 1950s-built 2-6-2 was showing signs of scorching on the lower area of smokebox door from its Saturday diagrams to Poznan. The locomotive was taken out of service on the following Friday for remedial attention, the Saturday Poznan service reverting to diesel traction.

here we go 2022 off to a flying start .. nicely posing kestrel this morning before the rain stopped play .
Another view of my very tight leopard-skin dress, the kind of look which will give the potential client the right idea – without being too explicit and possibly embarrassing him in front of his important business contacts!
This is another of my contests! As usual, there are no rules. Express your enthusiasm, and try to influence the judges, in any way that you like!!!

MORE SODALITY NEWS!
Allow me to introduce to you the amazeballs ladies in the second pool of entries for our Sodality Try-outs in late August!! This group contains some real characters and hard triers – but will they qualify for the Sodality? (Which seems to be what every English Aristocrat wants for his trophy wife!)
Pledges entered in the second pool are:
Lady Arabella Crump ("Belle")
Always very busy on Chad Bronkhost’s websites, this blonde minx appears to be ultra-conservative in manner and attire on first acquaintance. Nothing could be further from the truth – and the fans adore the way this snobby and plummy-voiced English Rose transforms into a sexual wildcat when performing for the camera!! Recently married to the Duke of Wrexham, who has been beaming from ear-to-ear since the wedding!
Lady India Cuthbertson (“Indy”)
The ultra-sophisicated wife of Lord Harlech (owner of vast estates North Wales), this raven-haired beauty hales from Merseyside , where she came up through the vibrant pole-dancing and lap-dancing scene in Liverpool’s clubs and bars. India is the girl with the naughtiest, dirtiest-sounding laugh on the entire circuit (and she has the appetites to match!)
Lady Caroline Darbyshire (“Cara”)
Lady Caroline is a real handful! This stunning brunette has recently married Lord Angus Bleasdale, and has wasted no time at all in defiling the marriage bed in almost every conceivable way (with her groom’s hearty encouragement!!!). This beautiful vixen is off to a flying start as an adulteress and cuckoldress, and is my personal tip to top the scoresheets in our three-day event!
Lady Maud French (“Frenchy”)
Recently married to Lord Rockhampton, but previously a seasoned cuckoldress and top-end professional escort, this strawberry-blonde English Rose is (like lady Arabella Crump) a lady you would never imagine in a thousand years could get up to the disgraceful things that she loves doing!! Sven ‘Rockfist’ Shatterhand (Chad Bronkhorst’s chief rival in the booming genre of “snooty porn”) is mustard-keen to caste Lady Maud in one of his upcoming extreme productions.
Lady Chelsea Gascoigne (“Chaz”)
This gorgeous glamour model, polo-star and nude round-the-world yachtswoman is now married to Lord Barnes, who is several decades her senior. It’s her fourth aristocratic marriage in six years. Her outrageous escapades light up her husband’s life!
Lady Miranda Hastings (“Mandy”)
This scarlet-tressed temptress has recently married Lord Luton, the disgraced former Law Lord and her personal legal advisor (!!). One of Sir Harry Rakefield’s proteges, Mandy was a popular stripper and poledancer when Sir Harry introduced her to her future husband – an event which took place during a New Year’s Eve orgy at Lyndon Towers. Mandy is another girl that ‘Rockfist’ Shatterhand is keen to recruit for his website – but he may first have to fight of competition from Mr Bronkhorst!
Lady Katherine Kentridge (“Kato”)
Yet another keen horsewoman and strict disciplinarian, this dynamic brunette is very active with the Pratt’s Bottom Ladies Extreme Riding Academy. Kato is a dedicated Female Supremacist, who believes that men exist solely for the convenience of Women. She has recent married Lord Hammersmith, and believes that his vast wealth now exists entirely for her pleasure and amusement.
Lady Deirdre Mapplethorpe ("Deedee")
A statuesque blonde Dominatrix, this former catwalk model has been wedded for the past 18 months to the Duke of Middlesex, her third aristocratic marriage in the last five years. DeeDee has been running her own extreme BDSM website for some time. She also entertains wealthy clients from the aristocracy, City, government, and the military at her chic pad in Chelsea. If you have to ask how much, then you can’t afford her services! Needless to say, her hubby was - once upon a time - one of her clients!
Toodle-pip for now!

Andean Cock-of-the-Rock (female, Rupicola peruvianus) - Alambi, Ecuador
A fabulous bird I first read about as a young boy in my 'Amazing Birds of the World' book, I always hoped I might get to see one & so it was a somewhat special moment for me when this turned out to be the first (of MANY!) birds I photographed in Ecuador when we happened across this female while wandering up a riverside path on the first morning of our tour. Took some quick maneuvering to find a window in the vines, but I quite like how it turned out.
Interestingly, the females are brick red, while the male plumage is much closer to blood orange & I'll share a pic of them shortly.
So yeah I know, I am late with this upload, but this is my take on the Forever Bicycles exhibition from this year's Nuit Blanche.

World-renowned Chinese artist and activist Ai Weiwei had a new edition of his Forever Bicycles sculpture in Toronto's Nathan Phillips Square. 3,144 interconnected bicycles will form a three-dimensional structure creating an incredible visual effect. Yong Jiu, literally translated as "forever", is the foremost bicycle brand in China; Ai re-interprets such everyday found objects in an abstract and symbolic way. The sheer quantity of bikes and the diverse perceptions of viewing points create a colossal labyrinth-like, visually moving space, which represents the changing social environment in China and around the globe.

A flying start to 2023 Part 5. Thanks as always to Kim for the diptych!
My thanks definitely have to go out to my good friend Chris (and personal chauffeur, who's not on Flickr) who without, this shot would not have been possible.
It's Dungeness, somewhere I have wanted to get to for a long time, but I don't drive and it's very difficult to get to otherwise.
This walkway has been shot by so many great photographers here on Flickr and I've always wanted to try my hand at it. It was one of the last shots I took towards the end of the day and the conditions were just perfect for it.
Thanks as well to artery-crea who is a work colleague who works in our Studio. He has been very kind and very patient in answering MANY questions I have had on processing techniques. Also, he has just bought an SLR and is off to a flying start, so check out his stream.
OH AND I FORGOT TO MENTION THAT I SOLD MY FIRST SHOT, OF: THE RYE TREE :-)
