UP's ALCO 4-8-4 No. 844 is one of America's best-loved steam locomotives, having been retained in working order as the railroad's roving ambassador since the end of regular steam operations in 1959. She was naturally, one of the stars of the transcontinental sesquicentennial celebrations; but visitors to Ogden also had the chance to see one of her older sisters, No. 833.
This loco is slightly older than her sister, being built as part of the second batch of FEFs in 1939. Sadly, although the two engines came within a few hundred yards of each other during the event, it was not possible to photograph the two together; to extract 833 from her siding would have required a significant rearrangement of the museum's exhibits.
