A FEC LNG set leads a NB stack over the San Sebastian in St. Augustine, Florida.

Early in the morning on December 1st, 2023, northbound FEC 202-01 would get involved in a fatal trespasser strike at Ojus, FL, around the MP 352. Unfortunately for the crew, they would have to hold their position on the mainline as the authorities carried out their investigation. They would get back on the move at dawn, allowing for rare photo opportunities further north. There are no scheduled northbound mainline freight trains out of Hialeah this early in the morning, hence the rarity of it… One might call it a grim stroke of luck.

Running ten minutes behind BLF 701-01 N on the West Main, the late-running FEC 202-01 eases between the signals at CP SUNRISE at 07:36 with 59 cars worth of intermodal loads destined for Titusville and Jacksonville. Openings between the trees allow the lead Champion-painted ES44C4, #FEC817, to catch some of the perfect early morning’s golden light, framed with one of SUNRISE’s signal gantries and an adjecent CEMEX cement silo. Despite their earlier incident, 202-01 continued their northward journey unabated, picking up speed through town as their EoT cleared up the blocks.

Florida East Coast Railway ( FEC ) Northbound Intermodal Train 226 ( Miami to Jacksonville, FL. ) passes through Palmer Street in St. Augustine, FL. with a pair of ES44C4's in charge in the newer FEC Champion scheme brought back from FEC's passenger train days.

Two Florida East Coast Railway ES44C4’s split by a company liquified natural gas fuel tender take in the superelevated curve at MP 335 right before the Cypress Creek Canal. #FEC817, one of 23 GEVOs on the roster, takes the charge on southbound train 103-26, a Jacksonville to Miami manifest with 155 cars for FEC’s southernmost terminal.

Scenes of regular mid-afternoon southbound manifests on the FEC mainline between West Palm Beach and Miami have now become scenes one would wish to see, and not expect. Later on in 2022, FEC management would fiddle with their train lineups and adjust trains 103 and 204 to terminate and originate, respectively, in Fort Pierce, FL, it being one of the smaller terminals along the mainline that still received a significant amount of traffic. From then on, southbound manifest traffic would be split up between the three remaining road freights to Hialeah Yard, trains 101, 105 and 107.
