Zuben Sauna, Ph.D., (shown) principal investigator in CBER’s hemostasis laboratory, and chemist Wells Wu, Ph.D., are exploring the shapes of proteins used in medical treatments to determine why they prompt a strong reaction from the body’s immune system. Suspecting that the shapes may be part of the problem, the researchers are using tiny pieces of DNA-like molecules called aptamers to probe the proteins. Hemostasis is the process of getting bleeding to stop and the antibodies that cling to these proteins are causing life-threatening complications, particularly in the treatment of bleeding disorders.

Scientists at FDA’s Center for Biologics Evaluation and Research (CBER) work to facilitate the development of safe, effective treatments that would neutralize biological threats to public health and security. CBER regulates preventive and therapeutic vaccines, blood and blood products, human cell and tissue-based products, gene therapies and xenotransplantation.

" The FDA has a long history of attacking and suppressing health freedoms, but did you know the agency might now be threatening religious freedom, too? Under the new CAM Guidelines issued by the FDA, any items used in altering or enhancing the "function" of a living person are subject to regulation and control by the FDA. Items used in religious practices are NOT excluded from these guidelines. "

GENERIC DRUG USER FEES: Application Review Times Declined, but FDA Should Develop a Plan for Administering Its Unobligated User Fees

Note: Approved: FDA issues an approval letter to an applicant when the agency has concluded its review of a generic drug application and the applicant is authorized to commercially market the drug. Tentatively approved: FDA issues a tentative approval letter when the agency has completed its review of an application, but patents or other exclusivities granted to the original, brand-name product prevent approval. A tentative approval letter does not allow the applicant to market the generic drug product until the related patents and other exclusivities no longer prevent approval. Complete response: FDA issues a complete response letter to an applicant at the completion of a full application review where deficiencies are found—the complete response letter describes any deficiencies that must be corrected in order for an application to be approved.
