This guy had some great eye make up, so I complimented him on it. He said he was a hair dresser and had just styled the girl next to him. He was super stoked on how he did her hair, said it was trend setting. I commented that I had rocked an almost identical look in 1984 and he was speechless for a moment. I'm probably old enough to be his mother. Sigh...

I've been asked by some people how I do my makeup, so here we go! I know all this might make it look complicated, but it's really not.
MATERIALS:
-Eyelash curler
-Mascara (I use Maybelline)
-Eyemakeup remover (if needed)
-Creme eyeshadow
-Brownish shadow for base
-Purpleish shadow for topcoat (I use Sparkling Wine by Maybelline)
-Gold shadow for inner eyelid (I use Khaki Craze by Maybelline)
-White shadow for browbone (I use Vanilla by Maybelline)
-Liquid eyeliner
-Pencil eyeliner
-Small bristled brush
-Foundation
1.) Curl eyelashes and coat with mascara.
2.) Use creme eyeshadow that's closest to your base color (brown). Put light layer of base eyeshadow on eye.
3.) Use a smaller amount of creme eyeshadow on top of base coat to help your purple shadow stick. Brush on purple shadow.
4.) Use a tiny bit of yellow/green creme shadow and pull it out across the first 1/3 of your inner eyelid. Dust this area with gold shadow.
4.) Use the liquid eyeliner to line your eyes. I find I get the smoothest lines if I pull from the outside of my lid toward the side closest to my nose.
5.) It's easier to see messy parts if you use darker colors, so clean up area with eyemakeup remover and a q-tip if you have to.
6.) Dot a small amount of foundation around your eye. Use a sponge to smooth it.
7.) Using the purple shadow, pull up slightly onto your browbone so that the purple color is a bit more prominent when eyes are open.
8.) Use the white shadow to accent your browbone. I even go as far as to pull it around the inside of my upper lid down near part closest to the cornea (but not in it: that hurts!)
9.) Dab your small bristled brush in the purple shadow: don't load it up too heavily, though! Use this to smooth out your shadow and create the illusion that the color is fading into the white on your browbone.
10.) Touch up as needed with mascara/curler/pencil liner. Ta-da!

Wigstock 2004 in Tompkins Square Park in the East Village of New York City as part of The Howl Festival.
Wigstock started in 1984 , Drag Queens from the Pyramid Club headed over to Tompkins Square Park, including Brian Butterick, Michael "Kitty" Ullman, Wendy Wild, The "Lady" Bunny and a few members of the Fleshtones were horsing around in the bandshell when someone came up with the idea of a day-long drag festival - and calling it Wigstock. It was Lady Bunny went ahead and getting the necessary permits and Wigstock was born. Wigstock moved to Pier 54 after becoming such a large event that it could no longer be held in Tompkins Square Park, in 2004 Wigstock returned to the East Viallge as part of the annual Howl Festival.

Indian Bronze Cosmetic Vessels - used for making and storing eye makeup
A Ram scull behind them.
The front two items are used to make kohl - kajal ( eye makeup )
Kohl has been worn traditionally as far back as the Bronze Age (3500 B.C. onward) by the Egyptian queens. It was originally used as protection against eye ailments. There was also a belief that darkening around the eyes would protect one from the harsh rays of the sun. India's oldest caste, the koli, used kohl as a cosmetic. In addition, mothers would apply kohl to their infants' eyes soon after birth. Some did this to "strengthen the child's eyes", and others believed it could prevent the child from being cursed by the evil eye.
So how is it made ?
Preparation of homemade Kohl - kajal begins with dipping a clean, white, thin muslin cloth, about four by four inches square, in sandalwood paste or the juice of Alstonia scholaris (Manjal karisilanganni), which is then dried in the shade. This dip and dry process is done all day long. After sunset, a wick is made out of the cloth, which is used to light a mud lamp filled with castor oil. A brass vessel is kept over the lamp, leaving a little gap, just enough for the oxygen to aid the burning of the lamp. This is left burning overnight.( as in photo above ) In the morning, one or two drops of pure ghee (clarified cow's butter) or castor oil is added to the soot which now lines the brass vessel. It is then stored in a clean dry box or container like the two at the back of the photo !
The two kohl pots (Surmadani) have a Garuda screw top, attached to the main pot are bells ...that still jingle !
Photo taken at 3.20pm in the freezing fog 20/1/11 Brrrr.
These Cosmetic Vessels are similar to those in the Pitt Rivers Museum Oxford.
Got to say Adrian looked superb dressed as Capt Jack Sparrow. Although you cant see on this photo, the similarity to Jonny Depp was incredible, you could barely tell them apart! Well done Adrian you looked fantastic!
Lovely Michigan Saturday. I thoroughly enjoyed myself. I got dressed up for drinking and dinner and wore really bright eye makeup for the first time in a long time. I stood out in the crowd even more than usual- most people don't really dress up to go out in New Buffalo since it's primarily a beach and boating town. It's pretty casual.
I used to do creative and avant garde makeup stuff constantly and go out to nightclubs... but life has changed significantly. I miss the dancing and the process of dressing up to go out most of all. The 4 am bedtimes, though? Not so much.
