Berlin art space Kunstraum Richard Sorge presents part II of the international group show
"Strich & Faden - Heimat, Volkskunst und Travestie"
In 2008, Kunstraum Richard Sorge initiated an ongoing series of large international subversive Arts & Crafts and Neotrad exhibitions, the second of which will take place this May. Titled Strich & Faden, the exhibition project offers subversive travesties of craft and folklore and works that thematize Heimat (heritage), gender & identity in innovative or humorous ways.
The folksy German expression "nach Strich und Faden" means to do something thoroughly, with great artistry and precision, or according to the rules of an art or craft. In contemporary language the term has gained connotations of trickery, deceit and travesty. Travesty is a device present in many works in this show, either as an artistic attitude, or as a subject matter. The participating artists use it to subvert both the traditions of Art & Crafts and our expectations of art.
This new edition of Strich und Faden presents outstanding representatives of the thriving US-american confrontational Arts & Crafts scene - some of which are shown in Germany (or Europe) for the first time - and presents them alongside their (Eastern) European colleagues. Strich und Faden II goes beyond ironic crafting however, also incorporating conceptual and neo-traditional works.

"P", quilt by New York based Japanes artist Ai Kijima, 2008, fused, machine quilted, 25”x 34”.
Since 2002 the artist's impeccably made quilted collages stylistically move in a Pop-art direction, incorporating many copyright-defying appropriations of pop cultural icons and folklore from the last 30 or so years.
"Ai Kijima was born and raised in Tokyo, attended high school in Wisconsin, and currently lives in New York City. She tirelessly combs through thrift stores for novelty fabrics and combines them with timeless vintage fabrics. Curator's statement:
When I received my February/March American Craft Magazine there was a statement in reference to fiber artist Lenore Tawney talking about her "Devotion To Thread". It struck me as the perfect title for the upcoming show I was putting together for Woodland Pattern that would focus on artists working with components of "handcraft". I am pleased to bring together 15 artists from Milwaukee to New York, Alabama to California, that all work in a variety of mediums and methods, with the common "thread" of thread in their work.
My hope for this show is that the viewer will not only walks away with a new appreciation of using hand and machine embroidery, sewing, needlework, and handcraft within art, but will also feel inspired to go home and create. I am honored to be working with such a creatively diverse group of artists that are at varying degrees within their artistic careers willing to come together and celebrate their devotion to what ties them together, thread.

A complimentary limited edition, hand assembled (paper, wooden spool, hand stamped) catalog (edition of 300 pieces) will be available while they last to gallery guests. The catalog will be designed and assembled by curator Faythe Levine as a way to commemorate this show and Woodland Pattern's commitment to bringing new work to Milwaukee.

The lovely curators at Ink-d Gallery in Brighton invited us to be part of their exhibition with the help of a nudge from the incredible craftivist Carrie Reichardt who specialises in mosaics and ceramics.
5 of our mini protest banners are hung in the gallery underneath 5 framed prints of photographs of the mini protest banners in a public space that links to the issue discussed. For example we have a banner on the theme of sweatshops next to the Topshop flagship store on Oxford Circus, capitalism mini banner near Bank station, one on tax outside the Treasury (we had to beg the security guard for this one and I said it was for my Art A Level project because I look so young hhehehe;p) and others.

Recycled over painted Hummel collector's plates by Garth Johnson, the California based artist, writer and hyperactive educator known for his "raging craft problem" at the Strich & Faden - Heimat, Folk-art and Travesty art exhibition at Kunstraum Richard Sorge, Berlin, May/June 2009. Johnson's website, Extreme Craft is a "compendium of art masquerading as craft, craft masquerading as art and craft raising its middle finger".
The Hummel plates collection has been selected by Garth Johnson for the show for their interesting relation to German-American history. Hummel was an artistic Bavarian nun, whose drawings were made into porcelain figures, and later into plates, by smart manufacturers. The Hummel cult found its way to the US as the ultimate German gift or souvenir through US soldiers stationed in West-Germany. As with other collector's plates Johnson uses, there is a melancholy aspect to them, they speak of discarded fashions, fancies and sentiments. The artist dissects the plates' morality by inserting his own painted and written commentaries into their wholesome imagery.

Strich & Faden II presents recycled overpainted Hummel collector's plates by Garth Johnson, the Eureka, CA based writer, artist and tireless hyperactive educator known for his "raging craft problem". His website, Extreme Craft is a "compendium of art masquerading as craft, craft masquerading as art and craft raising its middle finger".
Johanna Schweizer is often - lazily - described as the Dutch Louise Bourgeois. This may refer to the surrealist aspects of her work; her perseverance and consistent vision; or the long time it took for the world to catch up with her work.
The artist's extensive collection of crocheted fiber sculptures is both profound and witty, it alludes to a wide array of themes, from cross-genderness and cross-speciesness; to religious suffering and sexual ritual. Folkloric, pagan, and fairy tale elements are incorporated as well, the sensually playful and the deadly serious going hand in hand.
