As promised, I wanted to let you know that Lesser Tenrecs do not use water to clean theirselves. They use SAND!! Rather special chinchilla sand and it's rather entertaining to watch them bathe!! It is usually a 20 minute process, no candles, bubble bath or nice soap... just a very determined lesser tenrec who is eager to thoroughly exfoliate theirselves. There have been some very tragic reports on a large facebook group of inexperienced owners actually washing their lesser tenrecs with soap and water, particularly after their torpor. Tenrecs tend to soil themselves during their long sleep, but it's the worst intervention for the tiny quilled wonders and unfortunately this has led to their needing veterinary treatment and an often tragic outcome.
So I don't bath my beauties. They all have a large sandbath in their vivariums which is used (in spring and summer months) a great deal. Thank you all for your continued support on Flickr. xxxx
The bark on a London plane tree has a distinctive gray mottled appearance that develops when it exfoliates, revealing white, brown, and creamy yellow colors. This distinctive camouflage pattern makes it easy to identify a London plane tree from a distance.
The bark of the planetree sheds because of the tree’s rapid growth. The thin bark doesn’t expand as quickly as the tree, and large flakes of bark drop off every year.

Common ninebark (Physocarpus opulifolius) is a deciduous flowering shrub widely used in landscaping. The bush gets its name from its unique exfoliating bark, which peels back in thin layers as its branches mature. This coarse-textured shrub is a member of the rose family, which also includes hawthorn and spirea, and features yellow, green, or reddish leaves that form an attractive cascading mound. Ninebark flowers in late spring with clusters of white or pink blooms, and it bears red fruit in late summer and autumn, attracting birds.
The shrub is found naturally across the eastern United States, stretching west into the Dakotas and south to northern Florida. Northward, it extends well into Canada. One variety thrives in the Rocky Mountain region and west to Oregon and Washington.
While inspecting some potential haunts for the presence of the Golden-tailed Gecko in brigalow habitat near Roma recently, I found a drab gecko sheltering on a tree bole upon peeling back a section of exfoliated bark as the sun was setting. Initially, I thought that this would be the sympatrically occurring Eastern Spiny-tailed Gecko, due to its muted colouration. Upon closer examination, I could make out a faint stripe along the tail confirming the finding of a Golden-tailed Gecko, a brigalow endemic! I was over the moon as I sprinted back to camp and placed him in a white container for several minutes…..Upon lifting the lid, the beauty of the gecko was fully revealed with the colour change, as I stared down at a little Dalmatian with its tail on fire!

Cornus kousa, commonly called Kousa dogwood, is a small, deciduous flowering tree or multi-stemmed shrub that typically grows 15-30’ tall, with a vase-shaped habit in the early years but eventually maturing to a more rounded form. Bloom occurs in late spring. The showy parts of the Kousa dogwood “flower” (3-5” across) are the four narrowly pointed petal-like white bracts which surround the center cluster of insignificant, yellowish-green, true flowers. Flowers are followed by berry-like fruits (to 1” diameter) which mature to a pinkish red in summer and persist into fall. Fruits are technically edible, but are usually left for the birds. Oval, pointed leaves (to 4” long) are dark green, but usually turns attractive shades of reddish-purple to scarlet in autumn. Mottled, exfoliating, tan and gray bark on mature trees is attractive in winter. [...].
‘Satomi’Flower bracts vary in color intensity from light pink to deep pink to rose pink depending on a number of factors including landscape placement, cultural conditions and geography. Abundant flowering occurs in June. Deep green foliage turns attractive shades of red in autumn. Red fruits in autumn are attractive but not very tasty. [...].
[In summary]: Pink flowers in Spring, red fall fruit and purplish-red fall foliage color make this cultivar stunning. MBG

London plane tree is a hybrid cross of American sycamore and Oriental planetree. It is a large deciduous shade tree that is generally pyramidal when young and becomes open and spreads with age. It may grow to a height of 70 to 100 feet tall and 60 to 75 feet wide. The light brown outer bark exfoliates to reveal a creamy olive inner bark. The leaves are alternate, 3 to 5 lobed, medium to dark green, and may have coarse marginal teeth. The flowers bloom in clusters in the spring and are not particularly showy. The male flowers are yellow, and the female flowers are reddish. The female flowers produce a fuzzy, rounded, bristly fruit ball that ripens to brown in October. The fruits tend to persist through the winter. The tree is a member of the Platanaceae family.

Well, I spotted it and in the image it looks like it has spots because of all the dew it is shaking off. It was down in the long, wet grass looking for bugs just before I arrived.
The male Brewer's blackbird is backlit and was shot at a shutter speed that was too low to freeze all the motion. You can see this in the tail feathers that look rippled and not sharp, and they also have areas that look quite orange. That colour is a bit of a puzzler.
The bird's beak is exfoliating and if you increase the image size you will notice a light area near the base of the upper mandible.

For some reason this year I have really been noticing just how beautiful Sycamore trees are. They stand out with their white bark in a sea of otherwise grey/brown trees. This one was a lone standout in a field near Durban West Virginia. Here is some info on the trees: The sycamore tree is the largest deciduous trees in the Eastern United States. It grows to 30 meters tall and lives nearly 600 years. The bark is brittle and can't accommodate the fast growth and annual diameter accruals of the trunk and branches, so it cracks and exfoliates. What you see is the flexible plastic Handle of a Toothbrush.
A toothbrush is a small, handheld tool designed for cleaning teeth, gums, and tongue. It typically consists of two main parts:
Handle – The long, often ergonomically shaped part you hold. It can be made of plastic, bamboo, or other materials, and may include grips or rubber sections for better control.
Head – The top part that holds bristles, which are the fine, flexible strands used to scrub the teeth. The bristles are usually made of nylon and are arranged in rows. They can vary in texture (soft, medium, or hard) depending on user preference and dental needs.
A toothbrush is a common oral hygiene tool used primarily for cleaning teeth and gums. Here are several use cases for a toothbrush, categorized by purpose:
Primary Use Case
Daily Dental Hygiene
Function: Removes food particles, plaque, and bacteria from teeth and gums.
Frequency: Recommended twice daily.
Tools Used: Manual or electric toothbrush with fluoride toothpaste.
Secondary/Additional Use Cases
Tongue Cleaning
Some toothbrushes have a textured back for cleaning the tongue to reduce bad breath.
Braces/Orthodontic Care
Special brushes (e.g., orthodontic toothbrushes or interdental brushes) are used to clean around brackets and wires.
Denture Cleaning
Denture-specific toothbrushes are used for cleaning artificial teeth.
Gum Stimulation
Gentle brushing massages gums and can improve circulation and gum health.
Non-Oral Use Cases (Unconventional but Common)
Cleaning Small or Delicate Items
Electronics (keyboards, camera lenses)
Jewelry
Hard-to-reach corners in household objects
Beauty and Grooming
Eyebrow grooming
Hair dye application in small areas
Exfoliating lips or dry skin spots

I was recently blessed to spend an hour or so watching a pair of ospreys working feverously on their nest high up in a Ft. Pickens Florida pine tree. I was impressed by how the female would maliciously weave the pine branches while the male gathered. On at least two occasions, the males’ selections were rejected for quality control issues. The disappointment could be clearly seen in his eyes…it was the same look I give the Mrs. when I return to the grocery cart with bananas that are in the “wrong stage of ripeness” and are rejected by the female. The nest was in its earlier stages, not any wider that the female’s length.
At one point, I noticed the male returning empty taloned. The female immediately ducked her head, bracing for impact as instead of landing on an adjacent branch as he had so many times before, this time was it was the middle of her back. She knew his intensions while he was pretty far back…I’m guessing this is not part of the mating process as she should be well underway with egg development (normally 13.4 weeks from mating to first egg), so hopefully it is normal osprey behavior and not retaliation for stick rejection! Maybe it was to better compact the base construction of the nest…I truly have no idea.
He walked around on her back with talon tips beneath her feathers, wings fully retracted and seemingly proud…as if participating in some type of sick Edward Scissorhands exfoliating pregnancy back rub. I suppose it could be the equivalent to our hug…
I truly love the “why” aspect of nature.
It is 3am and I need some sleep. I hope your weekend is blessed!

Exfoliating wall render, used as a "canvas" for graffiti, many times restored and over and over repainted, now showing the stratigraphy of urban art....
It wasn’t all sunsets and speedos on this trip to Fuerteventura. And although Ali reminded me that our time here started almost three weeks later last year, we’ve been on the island in deepest winter before and not seen any rain. This time, the heavens vented forth on a number of occasions. Never for more than about three minutes at a time, and quite often followed by warm sunshine almost immediately, but even so - we’d come here to escape the end of the winter at home. The first week and a half were dogged by “La Calima,” with sand blasted across the sea from the Sahara Desert that whipped around us with alarming vigour. The exfoliating shower gel in the wash bag back at the hotel might as well have been left at home in view of the free skin care regime the elements were offering. Today, we’d decided to walk to the rim of Calderon Hondo, a nearby volcano, only to be rained upon as we arrived at the top. I’d never felt so cold here before. It wasn’t supposed to be like this. Last year, the temperatures had at times reached the low thirties, but at the moment we were more than ten degrees cooler as we sat at the edge of the crater feeling slightly downcast. There was no point in going and lying on the beach today. We’re not into suffering for the sake of it you know.
So after descending back to the leeward side of the volcano and the comfort of the car, we came here. Well we didn’t at first - instead we decided to head down a very rough track at a quarter speed, dodging sharp stones and wondering whether it really was such a great idea. Eventually, we shuffled uncomfortably over a very lumpy entrance to what passed for a parking area at the top of the cliffs, and squeezed in next to a series of far more rugged looking vehicles. There was a path down to the sea, where two kamikaze windsurfers were trying their best to shred their boards and bodies into untidy ribbons, racing towards the rocks at the shore before changing course at the last moment. Maybe I could try photographing the water coming in over those rocks? Or maybe I should have pulled up at the other end of this long beach - the end that offered rather more possibilities than here; the end where I had unfinished business from last year. Twelve months earlier I’d taken what I thought was a lovely glowing long exposure of an uncovered rock, only to find the raw image was about as sharp as a swimming pool full of candy floss. The submarine shaped rock in the sand looked as if the captain had just received instructions to intercept the stranger on the shore just as I hit the shutter. Maybe a wave had come in and nudged the tripod at the moment of truth. Maybe it was a simple case of user incompetence. It wouldn’t be the first time. We’ll come back to that image - writing this tale has reminded me of a tool that wasn’t in the armoury until recently.
The only thing was, the light didn’t look like it was going to play ball today, so whatever this was going to be, it wasn’t going to be a repeat performance. Even so, we crept over boulders and back along the dirt road to the headland at the edge of town, where Ali pulled out her kindle and I headed off towards the beach with the camera. In the absence of a warm glow on the horizon, maybe a moody flow on the foreground would fill the void. I wandered along the clifftop towards the beach, passing the usual array of ancient motorhomes from various corners of Europe, certain that at least one of them hadn’t budged an inch since our visit here last year. Down by the water, I felt at least that I was in familiar territory. Chasing receding streaks of white foam back down towards the sea isn’t exactly a leap from what I’m often playing at ten miles down the road from home, and for once, I stopped as soon as I knew I had a shot in the bag and moved onto something else.
“That looks just like the cappuccino I’m having,” was the response from one of my clearly not too occupied correspondents as she viewed the image over her morning coffee. By now, I was missing cappuccino - I’d moved onto black coffee for the duration of the holiday for practical reasons - so it wasn’t at all difficult to see it for myself. I’ve got one of those milk frothing gizmos at home now, and after years of trying, I’ve finally got my home brews just how I like them, chocolate sprinkles et al. Although I don’t usually take mine on the rocks; not unless it’s summer, and today didn’t feel like summer at all.
It wasn’t the end of the rain, although this was as gloomy as it got during our stay. Most sunset hours at the coast would be spent trying to balance out vicious dynamic ranges, and this was perhaps the only time before sunset that the histogram didn’t have a tantrum on the back of the camera. If I said I’d taken this at home in Cornwall, nobody would have batted an eyelid. But while it was reassuring to shoot a moody dark sky, we were here for warm afternoons on the beach. So thank goodness the sun was shining the next morning.
#macromondays #peel
I decided to share this image for the latest #mcromondays challenge called #peel !
It actually shows one of the tiny little helpers in some hard kitchen work. He had to peel the carrots.
The term "peel" can refer to different things depending on the context. Here are a few descriptions based on various contexts:
Fruit or Vegetable Peel:
The peel is the outer skin or rind of fruits and vegetables. It serves as a protective layer, shielding the inner edible part from environmental factors and potential damage. Peels vary in texture, thickness, and flavor; for example, the thick, bitter peel of an orange contrasts with the thin, delicate skin of an apple. Some peels, like those of cucumbers or apples, are often eaten along with the fruit, while others, like those of bananas or oranges, are typically discarded.
Process of Peeling:
Peeling refers to the act of removing the outer layer of fruits, vegetables, or other items. This can be done using various tools such as a knife, peeler, or even by hand, depending on the item and the desired result. For instance, potatoes can be peeled with a peeler to remove the thin outer skin, while an orange can be peeled by hand to access the juicy segments inside.
Peel in Cooking:
In cooking, the term peel can also refer to a thin strip of citrus fruit's outer skin, which contains essential oils and imparts strong flavors. Citrus peel, like that of lemons or oranges, is often used as zest to add fragrance and taste to dishes and beverages.
Peel in Other Contexts:
In a different context, "peel" can refer to a wooden paddle used in baking to transfer pizzas, bread, or other baked goods into and out of an oven. This tool, often called a "pizza peel," typically has a long handle and a flat surface for sliding under the dough.
Peel in Cosmetic Treatments:
In the realm of skincare, a peel refers to a treatment where a chemical solution is applied to the skin, causing it to exfoliate and eventually peel off. This process reveals new, regenerated skin that is typically smoother and less wrinkled than the old skin. Chemical peels are used to improve the appearance of the skin on the face, neck, or hands.

Platanus × acerifolia, Platanus × hispanica, or hybrid plane, is a tree in the genus Platanus. It is often known by the synonym London plane or London planetree. It is a hybrid of Platanus orientalis (oriental plane) and Platanus occidentalis (American sycamore).
The London plane is a large deciduous tree growing 20–30 m tall, with a trunk up to 3 m or more in circumference. The bark is usually pale grey-green, smooth and exfoliating, or buff-brown and not exfoliating. The leaves are thick and stiff-textured, broad, palmately lobed, superficially maple-like.
The flowers are borne in one to three (most often two) dense spherical inflorescences on a pendulous stem, with male and female flowers on separate stems.
The fruit matures in about 6 months, to 2–3 centimetres diameter, and comprises a dense spherical cluster of achenes with numerous stiff hairs which aid wind dispersal; the cluster breaks up slowly over the winter to release the numerous 2–3 mm seeds. The London Plane is one of the most efficient trees in removing small particulate pollutants in urban areas.
The London plane is one of 50 Great British Trees that the Tree Council selected in 2002 in honour of Queen Elizabeth II's Golden Jubilee. The list specifically mentions Britain's first London plane being in the city of Ely, Cambridgeshire.
The London plane is very tolerant of atmospheric pollution and root compaction, and for this reason it is a popular urban roadside tree. It was planted extensively in Victorian times to weather the pollution of London. It is now extensively cultivated in most temperate latitudes as an ornamental and parkland tree, and is a commonly planted tree in cities throughout the temperate regions of the world, in London and many other cities.
"For exceptional toughness, easy maintenance and four-season interest, few ornamentals can rival the appeal of ninebark. This deciduous shrub is a favorite of cold climate gardeners for its extreme hardiness and reliability. The common name of ninebark originates from the exfoliating bark that peels in layers when plants mature. The colorful foliage emerges in mid-spring, lasting well into fall. Clusters of pink or white flowers appear in late spring or summer, giving way to decorative red seedheads. Once the leaves have dropped, the bark and structure are revealed, lending beauty in the landscape that lasts all winter long."

Juglans nigra, the eastern American black walnut, a species of deciduous tree in the walnut family, Juglandaceae, native to North America.
Black walnut is an important tree commercially, as the wood is a deep brown color and easily worked. Walnut seeds (nuts) are cultivated for their distinctive and desirable taste. Walnut trees are grown for lumber and food, and processors have found additional markets for even the tough outer hulls by finely grinding them for use in abrasive cleansers, exfoliating cosmetics, and the like.

"In conceptual art the idea or concept is the most important aspect of the work.
When an artist uses a conceptual form of art, it means that all of the planning and decisions are made beforehand and the execution is a perfunctory affair.
The idea becomes a machine that makes the art.”

Had a lovely walk on the beach this morning, I had 2 reasons for going- 1- to make sure our little beach hut was still standing after Storm Brian yesterday (disclaimer- it’s not a posh Southwold-style beach hut, it’s a wonky little shed perched on the cliff at Felixstowe, purchased way before they became expensive/fashionable..!), and 2- to get the mud off my walking boots following yesterday’s post-rain stomp across the fields which this time of year are full of clay-like soil. Did you know the best way to clean mud off your boots is to walk on a shingle beach? No manual effort required at all, no scraping or scrubbing, just a nice stroll on the beach and the stones exfoliate all the mud away until you could eat your roast dinner off your boots :)
It was still very windy and choppy today, and the light was a bit flat so I had a play with black and white conversions. The original photos were a bit insipid, so I hope this has worked, I much prefer this version.
Wishing you all a lovely week ahead :))

A most unpleasant shoot. Not because of the location, that was lovely, but due to the 60mph constant winds that we battled. Trying to compose an image while the side of your face is being aggressively exfoliated with sand is not nice. Most of the sand is now out from the joints of my tripod, the focus ring on my lens however has developed a slight grinding noise when I turn it.
Winter is currently retreating again, but on Friday I managed a quick outing over Harter Fell (the Haweswater one). I say quick, wading through soft powder whilst being exfoliated by spindrift never makes for a quick walk....
