1948 Alvis TA14. And, like all Alvis cars, Alvis only supplied the chassis, drive train, and underpinnings with all being custom bodied by coachbuilders.

The Story of This Particular Car:

The TA-series Alvis was a new model offered after the close of World War II, from 1946 onward. Power for the TA was derived from a 1.9-liter four-cylinder engine and four-speed manual transmission which were both slightly improved from their prewar configurations. Three body styles were offered: a Sports Saloon by Mulliner, as well as Drophead Coupes by either Carbodies or Tickford.

Despite the TA 14’s origin as a premiere postwar model designed to reinvigorate Alvis’ production facilities towards civilian vehicles, it did better than anyone had hoped. More TA 14s were produced than any other model in the company’s history. It is further believed by the Alvis Owner’s Club that more examples have also survived than any other model, with much of this owed to the robust design and construction. By the end of 1950, the TA 14 had been phased out of production and replaced by the more powerful TA 21.

This particular TA 14 is clothed in the striking Drophead Coupe body supplied by Carbodies, one of just 400 examples believed produced. According to records from the Alvis Owner’s Club, the car was dispatched on 30 August 1948 to the British Embassy in Washington, D.C. where its first owner was employed as the Civil Air attaché. Nearly 40 years later, it appears for sale in a 1986 Alvis Club publication.

More recently, this TA 14 passed through collections in Fort Lauderdale, Florida and Sun City West, Arizona prior to acquisition by the consignor in March 2005. It should be noted that several of the car’s previous owners were active members of the Alvis Owner’s Club who were enthusiastic and fastidious stewards of this particular chassis. As such, this nicely preserved TA 14 presently indicates fewer than 48,800 actual miles at time of cataloguing.

While within the consignor’s collection, this stately 1948 Alvis TA 14 Drophead Coupe by Carbodies has been carefully preserved and thoughtfully maintained. With fewer than 400 examples of its kind produced, this chassis is presented showing actual mileage and having benefitted from many years of enthusiast ownership. One would be hard pressed to find a more attractive postwar Alvis.

43184 is turned out to head the 1S51 1227 PLM-EDN for her first revenue earning work in her new Inter City Executive livery. Unfortunately she was running 40 late by the time she reached the outskirts of Teignmouth. Nevertheless we can live with that as she looks so smart and gives us all something interesting to photograph on the Cross Country services. 43303 on the back.

Chicago & North Western SD50s No. 7000, 7001, and 7002 pull a 12-car executive special from deep shadow into muted sunshine on the Union Pacific in Echo Canyon, Utah.

The special moved participants between Chicago, Illinois to the Association of American Railroads meeting in Oakland, California.

For the 2nd night in a row, CN M391 had a worthy leader. While it may not have been the same quality trio, it was another one that is still in the BNSF family, SD70MAC 9700. Running on clear signals, the train builds speed as they head for Battle Creek to work before terminating at Kirk Yard.

There's not a whole lot of active BNSF SD70MACs around these days, many still stored across the system.

Not a lot of MACs got PTC either, many that did eventually got upgraded to MACe and received new paint.

When seeing the leader for Northtown-Pasco, I figured this would be a MACe leader. Worthy for sure.

I was quite surprised then to see the MAC was still in the "BN Executive" scheme it was delivered with decades ago.

Amidst a hazy afternoon sky, H-NTWPAS9-03A speeds west into Becker having just knocked down the signal at CP52.8. BNSF 9653 shows the way.

Nearing the spur to the W.A. Parish plant, BNSF 9687 leads loaded coal train C BKMSLP1 06B along the Galveston Sub south of Rosenberg, under some high-tension power lines running out of the plant.

I had envisioned some kind of glint shot with this train, and I think this here turned out quite nice.

The Day Gas rolls eastward on the 10th Sub east of Perma, MT with BNSF 9823 sporting its Executive “cream and green” paint. It was nice to finally bag an executive mac leader and it being a pair of mac’s didn’t hurt either.

Former BN SD70MAC 9650 leads a coal train, now running as NS S80, East out of downtown Chicago, IL.

Attempting a pacing shot while manually cranking down the windows plus downshifting into 3rd gear is quite the experience. Nonetheless the South Local headed by BNSF 9625 is crusing south on the Casper Sub near Durkee on the sunny morning of May 22, 2025.

Executive Ellen went to the dentist for a routine cleaning but found out that she needed more extensive work. Normally she doesn't flinch at dental work but Ellen has already had many uncomfortable issues and doctors appointments over the last couple months and she's getting frustrated.

She still didn't want to put down her coffee cup though :-)

The dentist's office is from the new Assembly Square set.....

I never thought in a million years I'd see another Executive MAC leading but I guess I was wrong! BNSF 9653, I assume a rare PTC equipped MAC leads train 734 around Nickajack lake and up Raccoon Mountain into Chattanooga. This was absolutely one of my favorite chases, especially with the 70MAC leading! Descriptions of each shot will be attached below.

An NS OCS hauls east through Otis, Indiana by MP 474 back in June of this year. As we all know, the NS F-units have since retired from their duties pulling executive trains, making it just another piece of gone-forever railroading history in a day and age where that seems to be a common theme. Glad I took this opportunity to shoot them, and it makes me wonder what else we’re shooting nowadays that may be gone in an instant...

Fresh out of Wyoming's Powder River Basin, BNSF train C-BTMCXC flies eastbound through Meriden on the Mendota Sub towards the Chicago. With a former BN SD70MAC on the point, this hot topic of a train made decent time as it kept a steady pace along the former CB&Q mainline.
