From a recent morning walk along Leif Erickson. There are these days in Portland where if the weather is just right and you time it just right there can be this low-lying bank of clouds draped over the Willamette River. Then if you head to Forest Park and take one of its several winding roads up toward the crest you can go from misty, mysterious, foggy forest to beaming, bright sunshine. On this day, a friend and I had decided to meet up at Leif Erickson for a walk, some photo talk and of course a bit of photography. As our luck would have it, Leif Erickson was right at the top of the cloud layer, so as our path dipped and climbed we found ourselves plunging into the fog or ascending above it, or as here, spending time in that in between zone where sunbeams played through the trees. Also as luck would have it, I had a leftover roll of Fuji Pro 400H in my Pentax. It is a film that I have long enjoyed for its color palette, even if I did not enjoy it quite as much as Ektar or Portra from Kodak. Nonetheless, Fuji and I have long had some success in forests, so it was fortuitous that I had lugged this camera with this film on this day at this time for this stroll.

Skycrane 'Goliath' on a helipad near Drummuir, it's strange what appears in the middle of nowhere sometimes.
World renowned architect Arthur Erickson designed Simon Fraser University in 1963 together with his colleague Geoffrey Massey. Located at the top of Burnaby Mountain, Erickson was inspired by the acropolis in Athens and the hill towns of Italy. The buildings are terraced to be in harmony with the landscape and emphasize the horizontal rather than the vertical. Erickson rejected 'the traditional separation of faculties and departments into individual buildings. In emphasizing the universality of the university rather than the specialization of knowledge, Erickson wanted to facilitate interdisciplinary work and a closer relationship between faculty and students. To this end, the design incorporated buildings which would house several departments as well as classroom space.'
In my years spent at SFU, I truly appreciated the stunning views of the Vancouver area, as well as the architectural design that meant I never needed to walk out in the rain to move between classes. I admire Erickson's design vision and agree he met his goals.
As I set up my photo, this happy couple strolled into my scene, and with a quick kiss, provided a lovely spark of interest. Congratulations to the two of you!

A few months ago I spent an entire day at Erickson Air-Crane in Central Point, Oregon (Medford). I'm finally getting some time to go through and edit. More to come later.

The Erikson Condominium, named after it's designer, Arthur Charles Erickson (June 14, 1924 – May 20, 2009) a Canadian architect and urban planner, was completed in 2010 by Concord Pacific.
The Senior Art major solo exhibitions (12 of them!) at North Park University launch tomorrow night with an stunning exhibition by Tim Erickson. Reception from 5 - 7 pm, 2.13.15. Tim's show runs through 2.20.15.
In addition to being an outstanding student / artist in his four years at North Park Tim has been an excellent gallery assistant, doing the brunt of the work installing shows in the gallery at NPU. Further Tim has assisted me with my own work as a studio assistant. You could not ask for more from a student. You definitely want to check out and follow him on his Flickr stream.

--on the subject of cellphone photos, this shot of Fox's best pal, Jiffy, floats to the top. The eastern tip of Hayden Island is one of our favorite spots, always a destination romp for the mutts. Sadly, Fox and I missed this outing, but my pals knew I'd enjoy seeing what I missed--so now I share it with you. Proof that a fancy camera isn't necessary to create a great photograph.
On this Memorial Day, we take time to remember those who paid the ultimate price defending our nation. May we always remember and never forget the high price that has been paid by so many heroes and their families so that we can live in freedom.
Though they are no longer with us, the impact of their sacrifice and their legacy lives on prompting us to live lives worthy of their sacrifice. I believe that their sacrifice is a commission for us to fight for freedom and that it's our responsibility to create the future they knew was worth dying for.

P.S. This is not our house lol we borrowed someone elses as we dont have a lap pool ;) we are starving artists lol.
**Note** This was more complicated than just dumping a bunch of legos in a pool... Each brick had to have a plate mounted to the botom to hold the air in, as well as to make sure they lay horizontal to the water :)
