The Equity Shoes factory is in Western Road, Leicester, where my student son has lodgings in a 2-up, 2-down Victorian terraced house, probably originally built for workers at this factory and many others on this side of the canal.
This Blue Plaque is located at Equity Shoes in Western Road, Leicester. Alice Hawkins was a working class leader of the women's suffrage movement in Leicester, and founder of the Leicester branch of the Women's Social and Political Union in 1907. Alice spent her working life as a shoe machinist in Leicester and worked for many years at Equity Shoes, which is still a good quality shoe manufacturer today, operating out of the same premises.
