I spend quite a large part of my life choosing, testing and repairing photographic equipment. It takes me much more time than creating pictures..

Once I unwittingly overheard a conversation of men drinking alcohol on the river bank.

They talked about fishing and choosing equipment for this.

One of them had a heavy box of various fishing gear. He showed them with pride, laid out and sorted out ... spinners, wobblers, fishing lines, hooks ...

And the other could boast of nothing but a shovel.

But I remember his words well:

".. there are men's magazines about women,

But sometimes it's just a woman.."

After that He dug up worms and went to fish..)

Nice weather and great photos this weekend for all of us

And let the pleasure of the process does not replace the result for us ! ) ) )

Macro Mondays - Photographic equipment - 2” Lens…

Brian is perched on the integral lens hood of my 14mm Samyang lens, staring nervously at the surface of the lens. The lens hood blocks stray light and so prevents glare and lens flare, particularly important for this lens that has a highly curved surface. The lens hood also protects the lens which is very helpful in this case as a filter cannot be used

No snails were harmed in the making of this photograph.

These are the big chicks, getting ready to fledge. I've been watching them for a few days, but they've either been flapping on cloudy days or sitting in the nest like bumps on a log on sunny days. I finally got them flapping on a sunny morning even if with the distance away, the partly cloudy sky behind, and the shady nest, the photos aren't the best. This may have been my best chance given that they'll leave soon and cloudy conditions are coming up do to frequent thunderstorms. Great Blue Herons, Siskiyou County, California

The crumbling tholtan ruins of Glen Dhoo are engulfed in snowfall on a bitingly cold January day. With this shot I opened up my aperture to soften up the foreground dry stone wall and to speed up my exposure time so that I stood a better chance of freezing the falling snow in mid-air. The haziness you can see in this shot is therefore actually snow and it played total havoc with my gear. Manx snow doesn’t tend to be dry and powdery, rather slushy and wet which drenches camera gear rapidly on contact. Pursuit of the shot can sometimes walk that delicate line between robustly testing gears weather sealing limits and writing the equipment off completely! ❄️🙈

This sad abandoned farm in northern Illinois has been the subject of many pics the last few years. But it maybe all a memory now as a recent trip by found the farmstead being cleared out,the excavation equipment in the yard of the old house. This was one of those abandonments where family pictures and memories abounded, making its plight all the more poignant. It has been said that love can solve all problems, but this place makes one wonder....

What ever this piece of equipment was/is must have been pretty heavy as it is place on a cement structure. Maybe a part of a heavy-duty motor?

Coal Mines operated in the Canmore area from 1886 to 1979. When the mines closed, much of the equipment lay abandoned in the forest. Now that multi-million dollar development is taking place, old abandoned coal cars like this are getting a second life as public art along the trails.

They're making a helluva racket on Richmond St. over the past few months, laying some sort of jumbo plumbing. They dig, lay pipe, put in temporary plates and asphalt, then return in a month to dig it up again and do some other kinda thing. I'm sure there's a method to the madness but when you're trying to listen or talk in a meeting, it can feel like giant sand worms are burrowing through the street - sometimes the whole house shakes! This gear was occupying our usual parking spot one morning.

A quick shot of the Orion Nebula (M42), one of my favourite celestial objects and a really satisfying target. I've been waiting a year for an opportunity to image this nebula again, this time with a polar alignment and guiding to enable much longer exposures than the 15 second subs I took last time and with a lower ISO to reduce noise. The next project with this is to either stitch two shots together or, better still, rotate the camera in order to fit both the Orion Nebula and the nearby Running Man Nebula into one frame.

[Wikipedia] The Orion Nebula (also known as Messier 42, M42, or NGC 1976) is a diffuse nebula situated in the Milky Way, being south of Orion's Belt in the constellation of Orion. It is one of the brightest nebulae, and is visible to the naked eye in the night sky. M42 is located at a distance of 1,344 ± 20 light years and is the closest region of massive star formation to Earth. The M42 nebula is estimated to be 24 light years across. It has a mass of about 2000 times the mass of the Sun. Older texts frequently refer to the Orion Nebula as the Great Nebula in Orion or the Great Orion Nebula.

The Orion Nebula is one of the most scrutinized and photographed objects in the night sky, and is among the most intensely studied celestial features. The nebula has revealed much about the process of how stars and planetary systems are formed from collapsing clouds of gas and dust. Astronomers have directly observed protoplanetary disks, brown dwarfs, intense and turbulent motions of the gas, and the photo-ionizing effects of massive nearby stars in the nebula. [Wikipedia]

I was originally enrolled into the GETTY IMAGES collection as a contributor on April 9th 2012, and when links with FLICKR were terminated in March 2014, I was retained and fortunate enough to be signed up via a second contract, both of which have proved to be successful with sales of my photographs all over the world now handled exclusively by them.

On November 12th 2015 GETTY IMAGES unveiled plans for a new stills upload platform called ESP (Enterprise Submission Platform), to replace the existing 'Moment portal', and on November 13th I was invited to Beta test the new system prior to it being officially rolled out in December. ESP went live on Tuesday December 15th 2015 and has smoothed out the upload process considerably.

These days I take a far more leisurely approach to my photographic exploits, and having moved from professional Nikon equipment to consumer bodies and lenses, I travel light less constraints and more emphasis on the pure capture of the beauty that I see, more akin to my original persuits and goals some five decades previously when starting out. I would like to say a huge and heartfelt 'THANK YOU' to GETTY IMAGES, and the 22.893+ Million visitors to my FLICKR site.

**** This frame was chosen on August 7th 2018 to appear on FLICKR EXPLORE (Highest Ranking: #80. This is my 103rd photograph to be selected, which for me is both amazing and exciting, as I never view my images as worthy compared to some of the awesome photography out there. EXPLORE is Flickr's way of showcasing the most interesting photos within a given point in time -- usually over a 24 hour period.

Flickr receives about 6,000 uploads every minute -- That's about 8.6 million photos a day! From this huge group of images, the Flickr Interestingness algorithm chooses only 500 images to showcase for each 24-hour period. That's only one image in every 17,000!..... so I am really thrilled to have a frame picked and most grateful to every one of the 17.950 Million people who have visited, favourite and commented on this and all of my other photographs here on my FLICKR site. *****

Cattle Egrets characteristically follows moving cattle, native large mammals, birds, or tractors capturing food disturbed by their movement.

"..Cattle Egrets prefer animals that move forward at the most appropriate speed for their own Walking foraging. When following farm, mowing, or land moving equipment, it uses Leap Frog Feeding, in which birds land at the tractor, remain in place foraging, and then fly to the moving head of the flock again. It also uses this behavior without farm equipment, the flock serving as its own beater (Newton 1986)..."

This photo was taken in June, which coincides with the breeding season of the egrets in north India, which is why most of the birds are in breeding plumage.
