Happy Caturday! I imagined getting a cuter photo than this but this was the best we could come up with today. At least it's a cool Equality bag. Have a great day!

This is the Equality Emerging statue, located in Galway, created by John Behan, one of Ireland’s leading sculptors. Unveiled in November 2001 it depicts a human figure breaking free from a wall that represents oppression and inequality.

The dedication on the statue reads:

“..... dedicated to people everywhere who are struggling for equality and to those suffering because of its absence. The emerging figure represents the force for equality, the wall, those people and systems in opposition.”

The statue reminds us that equality is not something that is given, but something that is earned through struggle and perseverance.

Happy Equinox!

In London, the September or Autumn Equinox is on

Friday, 22 September 2017 at 21:02 BST. In the southern hemisphere it will be the opposite season - the Spring or Vernal Equinox.

It marks the moment the Sun crosses the celestial equator, the imaginary line in the sky above the Earth's Equator. Day and Night are approximately equal all over the world at this time. (Equinox means equal night)

Equality for all

It is interesting how people react to a word or phrase. If you are a caring, upbeat and positive person you will see the best in most things.

However, 'equality for all' could see many held back in order to create perfect equality. 'Equality for all' could see universal empoverishment.

Be careful what you wish for and who you trust to deliver it.

Some animals may be more equal than others after all.

Everything is equal in the snow: all trees, all lawns, all streets, all rooftops, all cars. Everything is white, white, white, as far as you can see. Covered by snow, the well-kept and neglected lawns look the same. The snow hides the shiny newness of a just-bought car as effectively as it does the rust and dents of a ten-year-old one. Everything looks clean and fresh and unmarred by time or use. Snow, like the silent death it counterfeits, is a great leveler.

De vez en cuando la vida,

florece en este jardín

de mi desolada esencia

y una delirante rosa

con sus traviesas espinas

araña mi corazón,

me susurra, con amor

que no pierda la esperanza

y prometiéndome sueños

mas allá de la razón

me abraza con su ternura

manteniendo la ilusión

que me hace sentirme viva

disfrazando la amargura,

integrándose en mi piel

con su pizca de locura

y su mágico pincel

pinta de azul mi tristeza

y veo como se acerca

con sus tiernas melodías

posando en mi corazón

notas de lírico canto

ahuyentando ese quebranto

que invade mis noches frías.

De vez en cuando la vida

mezcla sus dulces aromas

con la prosa de mi piel

y yo le inclino mi sien

en el calor de su vientre,

ella plasma con sus labios

sobre mi boca dos besos.

Famous Five for Woman's Rights to Vote

my oldest daughter has always been obsessed with equality and justice. she did her book report last year on martin luther king…. she is enamored by rosa parks. she dressed up last year for an end of the year book report as corrie ten boom after we read the gut-wrenching book the hiding place together. then she wanted to learn more about the holocaust and we read anne frank’s diary. afterwards, i made a collage for her of anne frank pictures that hangs in her room. one year she made decorative flip flops and sold them to people at our local library and sent the money she made, over $250.00 to a relief organization… all on her own initiative. she is an amazing girl. she’s 10. i want to be more like her. when i picked her up from school today, this is part of the conversation we had… i’m not sure what sparked these thoughts… but i wanted to capture the moment (she was quite the sport to let me do this to her face!)

this is my daughter…. these are her words…

“today in the car i had the greatest talk with my mom about humans. i decided that caucasian people don’t usually treat african-american people fairly, and sometimes african-american people don’t treat caucasian people fairly because of the caucasian peoples hatred. so then i said “why cant we just be zebras, so we’ll treat everyone fair”. that’s what this picture represents to me…. EQUAL.”

The Organization of Cape Verdean Women (OMCV) in partnership with the Cape Verdean Institute for Gender Equality and Equity (ICIEG) and other partners announced on Sunday, March 7th in the City of Assomada, the main commemorative event of International Women's Day under the motto Djuntu na Paz, nu kombati violênsia na Cabo Verde (Together in Peace, in the fight against violence in Cape Verde).

The opening ceremony was co-chaired by His Excellency the Prime Minister, Jose Maria Neves and the UN System Resident Coordinator, Mrs. Petra Lantz and was also attended by the US Ambassador, Government representatives, and representatives of local municipalities, among others.

Celebrating International Women's Day we know that we join thousands of people around the world, to celebrate a date that marked the world 100 years ago. It is celebrated worldwide this year under the motto Equal Rights, Equal Opportunities: Progress for All.

At the same time, the 15th anniversary of the adoption of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action is celebrated. In 1995 during the IV World Conference on Women, world leaders committed themselves to promote equality, development and peace to women around the world.

The Beijing Declaration remains as current as it was 15 years ago: as long as women are not liberated from poverty and injustice all the objectives for which we work – peace, security and sustainable development - will be threatened. There are several examples of progress, although gender stereotyping and discrimination based on gender persist in all cultures and communities.

The International Women's Day is an opportunity to make a critical review of the successes achieved over the past 15 years, which are not few, and to take stock on how to achieve what is missing.

In Cape Verde a lot has been done since the independence in favor of women, allowing to create a favorable environment for increased participation of women, and to contribute to the development of the country. Great results have been achieved with emphasis on education, health, and political participation of women over the last years. Highlighting at the government level, among the ministers, eight are women.

However, it cannot be said that women have achieved the same equality as men, to emphasize the important achievements in favor of women in Cape Verde and thereby stimulate and continue this struggle. Because social ills still persist, such as unemployment, extreme poverty which affects mostly female heads of households, and the violence against women, that are in flagrant contradiction with the promise contained in the Charter of the United Nations "to promote the social progress and better standards of life in a broader concept of freedom".

The consequences of the violence for women and girls as well as to their families, communities and societies are incalculable. Too often the crimes are unpunished and the criminals go free. In this context the States have the responsibility to protect women and punish their aggressors, ensuring a continuing improvement of judicial processes.

With increasing frequency, men manifest themselves against this blot in our society. It is not easy to change mentalities and habits that endure for generations. It is a task for all – individuals, organizations and governments. We should work together to declare, loud and clear at the highest level, that violence against women will not be tolerated, whatever form it takes, the context in which it occurs and the circumstances that surround it.

Recognizing this fact, the African Union at the Conference of 15-year review of the implementation of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action that was celebrated in March 2010 in New York, launched the African Women's Decade 2010-2020, reaffirming the commitment assumed since the Dakar and Beijing conferences and the resolutions on gender equality and women empowerment taken by the Assembly of the African Union, to accelerate the achievement of results set out in the Millennium Development Goals.

“On November 4th, 2008 Proposition 8 passed, amending the state Constitution to ban same-sex marriage.

In the wake of the defeat, there has been a groundswell of initiative from within the community at grassroots level. Seizing this opportunity, new political and protest organizatitions are forming almost daily. The NOH8 Campaign is a photo project & silent protest created by celebrity photographer Adam Bouska and partner Jeff Parshley in direct reponse to the passage of Proposition 8.

The campaign started with portraits of everyday Californians who support Marriage Equality and soon rose to celebrities, military personnel, brothers & sisters, law enforcement, lesbian mothers, directors, politicians, newlyweds, and more, Photos feature subjects with duct tape over their mouths symbolizing their voices not being heard and NOH8 painted on one cheek in protest. ”

[Verse 2: Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie]

We teach girls to shrink themselves

To make themselves smaller

We say to girls,

"You can have ambition

But not too much

You should aim to be successful

But not too successful

Otherwise you will threaten the man."

Because I am female

I am expected to aspire to marriage

I am expected to make my life choices

Always keeping in mind that

Marriage is the most important

Now marriage can be a source of

Joy and love and mutual support

But why do we teach girls to aspire to marriage

And we don't teach boys the same?

We raise girls to see each other as competitors

Not for jobs or for accomplishments

Which I think can be a good thing

But for the attention of men

We teach girls that they cannot be sexual beings

In the way that boys are

Feminist: the person who believes in the social

Political, and economic equality of the sexes

[Verse 3 Beyonce:]

You wake up, flawless

Post up, flawless

Ridin' round in it, flawless

Flossin' on that, flawless

This diamond, flawless

My diamond, flawless

This rock, flawless

My rock, flawless

I woke up like this

I woke up like this

We flawless, ladies tell 'em

I woke up like this

I woke up like this

We flawless, ladies tell 'em

Say I look so good tonight

God damn, God damn

Say I look so good tonight

God damn, God damn, God damn

Momma taught me good home training

My Daddy taught me how to love my haters

My sister told me I should speak my mind

My man made me feel so God damn fine, I'm flawless!

[Verse 4 Beyonce:]

You wake up, flawless

Post up, flawless

Riding round in it, flawless

Flossing on that, flawless

This diamond, flawless

My diamond, flawless

This rock, flawless

My rock, flawless

I woke up like this

I woke up like this

We flawless, ladies tell 'em

I woke up like this

I woke up like this

We flawless, ladies tell 'em

Say I look so good tonight

God damn, God damn

Say I look so good tonight

God damn, God damn, God damn

Devils Tower (also known as Bear Lodge Butte) is a butte, possibly laccolithic, composed of igneous rock in the Bear Lodge Ranger District of the Black Hills, near Hulett and Sundance in Crook County, northeastern Wyoming, above the Belle Fourche River. It rises 1,267 feet (386 m) above the Belle Fourche River, standing 867 feet (265 m) from summit to base. The summit is 5,112 feet (1,559 m) above sea level.

Devils Tower was the first United States national monument, established on September 24, 1906 by President Theodore Roosevelt. The monument's boundary encloses an area of 1,347 acres (545 ha).

Source: www.nps.gov/deto/index.htm

Many People, Many Stories, One Place

The Tower is an astounding geologic feature that protrudes out of the prairie surrounding the Black Hills. It is considered sacred by Northern Plains Indians and indigenous people. Hundreds of parallel cracks make it one of the finest crack climbing areas in North America. Devils Tower entices us to learn more, explore more and define our place in the natural and cultural world.

Devils Tower National Monument, a unique and striking geologic wonder steeped in Native American legend, is a modern-day national park and climbers' challenge. Devils Tower sits across the state line in northeast Wyoming. The Tower is a solitary, stump-shaped granite formation that looms 1,267 feet above the tree-lined Belle Fourche River Valley, like a skyscraper in the country. Once hidden below the earth’s surface, erosion has stripped away the softer rock layers revealing the Tower.

The two-square-mile park surrounding the tower was proclaimed the nation’s first national monument by President Theodore Roosevelt in 1906. The park is covered with pine forests, woodlands, and grasslands. While visiting the park you are bound to see deer, prairie dogs, and other wildlife. The mountain’s markings are the basis for Native American legend. One legend has it that a giant bear clawed the grooves into the mountainside while chasing several young Indian maidens. Known by several northern plains tribes as Bears Lodge, it is a sacred site of worship for many American Indians. Devils Tower is also remembered as the movie location for “Close Encounters of the Third Kind.”

The stone pillar is about 1,000 feet in diameter at the bottom and 275 feet at the top and that makes it the premier rock climbing challenge in the Black Hills. Hikers enjoy the Monument’s trails. The 1.25-mile Tower Trail encircles the base. This self-guided hike offers close-up views of the forest and wildlife, not to mention spectacular views of the Tower itself. The Red Beds Trail covers a much wider three-mile loop around the tower.

Source: travelwyoming.com/places-to-go/destinations/national-park...

While America’s first national monument garnered significant attention as the backdrop to the 1977 Stephen Spielberg movie, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, the tower is sacred to Northern Plains Indian tribes and the Black Hills region Kiowa Tribe. With oral storytelling and a history that dates back thousands of years, today, American Indian tribes continue to hold sacred ceremonies at the tower, including sweat lodges and sun dances. There is more to this monument than its rich history. You can stop at the visitor’s center to learn about one of the ranger-led programs, night sky viewing, hiking and even climbing to the top of Devils Tower. If one day isn’t enough to explore this unforgettable area, bring your camping gear to stay within the monument, or stay just outside or in accommodations at one of the nearby towns.
