Turtles are unable to regulate their body temperatures independently, so they are completely dependent on the temperature of their environment. For this reason, they need to sunbathe frequently to warm themselves and maintain their body temperatures.
The red-eared slider gets its name from the small, red stripe around its ears, or where its ears would be, and from its ability to slide quickly off rocks and logs into the water.
Red-eared sliders are native to the Southern United States and northern Mexico, but have become established in other places because of pet releases, and have become an invasive species in many areas where they outcompete native species.
The carapace of this species can reach more than 40 cm (16 in) in length, but the typical length ranges from 15 to 20 cm (6 to 8 in). The females of the species are usually larger than the males. They typically live between 20 and 30 years.

Green is the colour of life, reflected in nature as a sign of renewal. The quiet atmosphere, beautiful scenery, good smells and fresh, clean air in forests all contribute to the healing of our nature and of course, ourselves.

An incredibly beautiful woodpecker that is found in the Himalayan forests and maybe a few other pockets in the country. It has a rich yellow and green mixed color which I found to be spectacular. The bird is also quite large compared to many other woodpeckers I have seen. The behaviours are similar to the others, but then these birds do come to the ground. We have sighted them foraging on the lower canopies and sometimes middle canopy unlike a few which are exclusive to the higher canopy.
There is another Lesser Yellownape as well which I was fortunate enough to sight and shoot. Both are amazingly beautiful! The differences are clear, but both share the same color and feather patterns except for a patch of red for the Lesser Yellownape on the crown.

One of 5 varieties of minivets in the forest we visited and a lifer!. Not the rarest, but definitely quite an uncommon one. It looks similar to the common Scarlet Minivet, but has a rosy frontside due to which it derives that name.
Similar behaviour as that of the other minivets except that it prefers small groups, usually 2 where both the male and female forage together. It is also a high canopy bird and prefers to come out to the open at the top!
ebird doesn't list the forest we visited as a native range of this bird, but since we sighted it during the non-migratory season, assume its resident there. The last trip we even sighted it nesting.

Lake Tyrrell is a shallow, salt-crusted depression in the Mallee. The 120,000 year old lake is regarded as one of the best places in Australia for star navigation, with the dark and endless skies providing the perfect environment to view the dazzling spectacles of the southern hemispheres constellations.

Can sometimes be known as the Dalmatian Iris and is a hardy flowering perennial belonging to the family Iridaceae native to Croatia. Grown from a rhizome and will adapt to many different environments.
We need to encourage more bees in to our gardens! All it takes is to plant more bee loving flowers in our garden, like Cerinthe, which i am told by the bees is a favourite of theirs :)

A large family of finches were basking in the morning sun on the dry bushes. They were probably 2-3 dozens of them. Different types of finches.

Tricolored Herons are quite common here in Southeast Florida but given their good looks and antics they are rarely taken for granted. Sometimes they fish like Reddish Egrets, throwing out their wings to cause shade from which they can more easily spot their prey. I see this more often in saltwater environments than fresh water. At Wakodahatchee Wetlands, a freshwater habitat where this image was taken, they tend to fish on the fly, catching small minnows by darting their bill underwater as they fly past. Snowy Egrets tend to fish the same way. In this image, the water was dark and the light was primarily landing on the bird, nicely separating it from its background. It gave me a nice low bank with a reflection to boot. (Egretta caerulea) (Sony a1, 200-600 lens @ 600mm, f/6.3, 1/4000 second, ISO 640)
American White Pelican
The American White Pelican (Pelecanus erythrorhynchos) is a large aquatic soaring bird from the order Pelecaniformes. It breeds in interior North America, moving south and to the coasts, as far as Central America and South America, in winter.
The species also has the second largest average wingspan of any North American bird, after the California condor. This large wingspan allows the bird to easily use soaring flight for migration.

Ordinarily I'd clone out those power lines in a heartbeat, but studying this composition, I realised they were essential to a story. If trees could think, both in life and in death, would each 'tree' seen here be envious of each other? One, grown strong and mighty, cut to have use carrying electricity, but denied it's old age; the other, wild and free, yet cruelly misshaped by weather and environment, with no future. other than an ignominious death? (I can hear someone out there saying, "Shut up, Fergal...it's just an ugly tree and a power pole. Get a life.") Seen at Aghinish, Co. Mayo, Ireland.
A Majestic and beautiful bird often sighted in forest areas around the country. Spotted two today, but sadly missed the flight shots of both of them in a second due to silly distractions. The bird was eyeing a prey in its style of watching from a perch. After a while it took off and disappeared.

Taken for the Grove Art Centre photo club, theme this week is 'play with light and dark'.
Photo location is the very lovely Frogmore which is lit beautifully by the shared environment. It is sweet, colourful, wild and feels like a warm hug. I couldn't use it for this shot but it's definitely worth seeing for yourself.
Waterfowl migration is heading toward peak and we plan to head out to some of our favorite wetlands to check it out next week. With luck, this is one of the species we'll observe and photograph.

Many people associate lions with the grasslands of the Masai Mara or Serengeti. While those areas are great for seeing lions, there are also other environments where they can be seen. This image was captured in the Chobe National Park, Botswana during an extended drought in August 24.

The (Grizzly) bear went over the mountain just outside of Nome, Alaska. He/she was in a great big hurry, we could not figure out why.
Starting the year in random mode starting with my favorite wildlife subject. As you might guess, I'll be doing another moose safari this year. Not often do I get a photo op of a moose in water. This is the latest one, taken over two years ago. I'm due in '25.
