Peace Corps Director Carrie Hessler-Radelet and her counterpart pose for a photograph after the signing of a historic partnership to establish a Peace Corps program for the first time in Vietnam, as U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry and U.S. Ambassador to Vietnam Ted Osius stand behind her, at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Hanoi, Vietnam, May 24, 2016.

The announcement of the partnership coincides with U.S. President Barack Obama’s trip to Vietnam and underscores the United States’ broader commitment to supporting the people of Vietnam through English language learning.

English proficiency is increasingly recognized in the international community as a critical tool for competitiveness and growth in the global economy. Interest in learning the language has grown exponentially in Latin America, with many countries making considerable efforts to improve English proficiency through policies and programs. How can governments implement effective policies and programs to improve English outcomes? What role can the private sector play in this field?

The Inter-American Dialogue is pleased to host a panel discussion around its latest report, English Language Learning in Latin America, which focuses on the challenges, opportunities and best practices in the teaching of English in the region.
