A method of mass-producing disease-fighting antibodies entirely within bacteria has been developed by a research group at The University of Texas at Austin. The group led by Dr. George Georgiou developed the new antibody-production approach to improve upon processes used previously to identify new drugs for arthritis, cancer and other diseases. The new approach developed in collaboration with Dr. Brent Iverson in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry is faster and has other advantages.

Postdoctoral student Yariv Mazor (on the right), lead author of the journal article, engineered antibodies to an anthrax toxin called PA. Graduate student Thomas Van Blarcom (on the left), then used a method called APEx, co-developed by Georgiou and Iverson’s lab, to identify the bacteria-bound antibodies that attached best to the PA. Van Blarcom then grew large numbers of those bacteria to begin refining the steps needed for mass-scale production of promising therapeutic antibodies.

Dr. Christine Schmidt, a biomedical engineer at The University of Texas at Austin, developed a method for replacing damaged nerves that simplifies surgeries to repair damaged peripheral nerves, which carry signals for motion or touch between the brain and muscles-- and potentially reduces risks.

Curt Deister (left), a chemical engineering graduate student who began working under Schmidt’s guidance in 2001, made adjustments to the original detergent solution to process human nerve tissue obtained from tissue banks. Deister also modified the detergent processing steps for use with larger and more complex human nerves. Deister continued refining the human nerve preparation process after joining Axogen as a Product Development manager in 2007. This included combining the detergent approach with technology developed at the University of Florida, Gainesville, to further enhance regrowth of severed nerves.

Like most other civil engineering students, Trevor Walker’s hectic schedule involves passing, playing and sometimes scrambling. His nimble mind and keen eye for detail prove handy for his college football career as well. In December 2009, the NCAA Big 12 Conference recognized his abilities in both the classroom and the field when they named him to its Academic All-Big 12 football team. A senior specializing in geotechnical engineering from Mt. Pleasant, Tex., Trevor qualified by maintaining a 3.20 or better grade point average and lettering in Longhorn football.
