American energy storage company Torus just secured $200 million from Magnetar Capital for a technology that could fundamentally change grid economics: massive spinning wheels that store electricity for 25 years.
While the industry focuses on incremental battery improvements, Torus is scaling flywheel energy storage to utility level. Their hybrid approach combines millisecond-response flywheels with traditional batteries, extending battery life while providing instant grid stabilization.

500 MW utility contracts with PacifiCorp

Already deployed at Salt Lake City Airport and industrial facilities
