The round table discussion with various Women's Associations in Afghanistan reinforced the United Nations Development Programme's steadfast dedication to women's empowerment across the nation. Over the past two years, UNDP initiatives have provided vital technical assistance and financial support to more than 75,000 women-led small and medium enterprises.By delivering business skills training and expanding access to capital, these initiatives have been instrumental in helping address barriers that historically limited women's participation in and access to markets.
UNDP’s overarching goal is to equip more Afghan women with the tools and resources needed to establish sustainable businesses and achieve economic self-sufficiency. When women gain financial independence through entrepreneurship, it brings them closer to realizing empowerment on their own terms so they can meaningfully contribute their skills and talents to Afghanistan's development.

With support from the programme, women entrepreneurs accessed affordable loans, allowing them to buy clean technologies that can help them grow their businesses.
By replacing diesel-powered water pumps with solar-powered ones, farmers are reducing greenhouse gas emissions, lowering operational costs, and decreasing physical labour. Reliable irrigation has improved their cultivation of rice, vegetables and other crops, enhancing productivity and food security.

Thailand | Opening of the WE Centre in Narathiwat: Women’s Leadership, Peace and Resilience (2026)
The UN Women Women’s Empowerment and Learning Centre (WE Centre) in Narathiwat was officially opened on 26 March 2026, marking a significant milestone in advancing gender equality, peace and resilience in Thailand’s southernmost provinces. The ceremony was presided over by Deputy Governor Krisananan Kamrai and the Chief Executive of the Narathiwat Provincial Administrative Office, Kuseng Yaworhasan, reflecting strong local leadership and commitment to women’s empowerment.
As part of UN Women’s WE Centre model, the Narathiwat centre brings together three interconnected priorities: promoting women’s economic empowerment, advancing peace and security through women’s leadership, and strengthening digital inclusion and safety. It serves as a safe and inclusive space where women, youth and community members can access skills training, leadership development, and resources to build sustainable livelihoods and resilient communities.
Located in Thailand’s Deep South, the centre responds to the unique context of the region, where communities navigate complex socio-economic and security challenges. By fostering collaboration among women leaders, civil society, and local authorities, the WE Centre strengthens trust, social cohesion and inclusive development.
The opening of the Narathiwat WE Centre is part of a growing national network of centres across Thailand, each tailored to local needs but united by a shared promise: to ensure that women and girls can lead, participate fully and thrive in their communities.
This UN Women-supported network of centres was established with the Department of Women’s Affairs and Family Development of the Ministry of Social Development and Human Security of Thailand. The centres – which localize the global women, peace and security agenda and expand women’s economic opportunities – are supported by the Governments of Australia, Canada, the Republic of Korea and the United Kingdom.
