I think this is a male Emperor Dragonfly AKA Blue Emperor (Anax imperator). I found it when I was on holiday in the Costa Blanca, Spain. If not, it is a very blue Lesser Emperor.
Many thanks to all who take the time to view, comment or fav my images.
It's rare to find this species perched but I noticed this individual settle in a small Birch sapling and managed to approach close enough to get an image before it flew off again. It's a shame that the background is a bit messy.
I went out hoping to photograph Black Darters on heather and got lucky with this Emperor that was warming up in the morning sunshine. In my experience, this species hardly ever perches in clear view so I was really pleased to get a rare close view on this occasion.

At the end of a hike, I suddenly noticed this wonderful butterfly on the path in front of me! I managed to take several pictures. Later I discovered that it was the Purple emperor (Apatura iris), a rare, protected woodland butterfly, which is on the red list of endangered butterflies in Switzerland (where I saw it). I also found out that "The adults are extremely elusive and occur at low densities over large areas".
This is a male specimen, whose blue-purple sheen is caused by iridescence (refection of the sunlight), which is why it only seems blue on one wing in my photo.
