It soars effortless in the sky and is a beauty to watch. The black kite (Milvus migrans) is a medium-sized bird of prey in the family Accipitridae, which also includes many other diurnal raptors. It is thought to be the world's most abundant species of Accipitridae, although some populations have experienced dramatic declines or fluctuations. Current global population estimates run up to 6 million individuals. Unlike others of the group, black kites are opportunistic hunters and are more likely to scavenge. They spend a lot of time soaring and gliding in thermals in search of food. Their angled wing and distinctive forked tail make them easy to identify. They are also vociferous with a shrill whinnying call. This kite is widely distributed through the temperate and tropical parts of Eurasia and parts of Australasia and Oceania, with the temperate region populations tending to be migratory. Several subspecies are recognized and formerly had their own English names. The European populations are small, but the South Asian population is very large. 16073
Effortlessly gliding along the cliff tops,while I capture this from the foot of the cliff, the fulmar is not a gull, but a relative of the shearwaters and petrels, easily distinguished at close range by its tube nostrils, and in flight by its stiffly held wings, found only on the coast, where they nest in hollows in the cliffs, and its while not in flight they are very vocal indeed!.

Like vultures, Crested Caracaras have featherless faces, which is perfect for eating dead animals. This is my first BIF shot that I'm happy with, still have a lot to learn about bird photography.

Gliding effortlessly into the wind, a mōlī makes a low pass over a beach on the north shore of Oahu. It will turn out to sea and wander for thousands of miles over the Pacific using its remarkable olfactory acuity to locate surface forage at upwelling sites. Expending very little energy on flight, this mōlī, or Laysan albatross, efficiently uses dynamic soaring to skim the water, rising on the wind and descending forward by gravity acceleration. Bones lock into position requiring no muscle to keep the six foot wing span extended.

This is a line from Ted Hughes' poem the hawk in the rain. Beautifully written about unmistakably a Kestrel, which is a falcon not a hawk. But I think we can forgive Ted Hughes a little poetic licence.
Nobody really knows why but Kestrels have been declining in Britain over the last twenty years, and more especially in Scotland. I don't seem to see as many hovering by road verges as I used to. I photographed this one near Digley Reservoir in the Peak District National Park.

Gonna shoot for a volleyball competition tomorrow. It's always been so hard for me to get good sport shots 'cos I'm so used to still shots. Need to be versatile!!! I doubt I'll be placing photos of it here though. Hmm. Have a great weekend everyone! :D

The scene is a macro view of a stack of ceramic dinner bowls. The frame spans 2½ - inches across.
Strobist/technical info:
The bowls were illuminated by two Nikon SB900 speedlights, placed 4-o'clock and 1-o'clock, one-foot above and two-feet away from the subjects. They were fired in Manual mode @ 1/128 power (4-o'clock) and 1/64 power (1-o'clock) through Neewer 24" x 24" soft boxes.
The SB900s were triggered by thee PocketWizard Plus X triggers.
Lens: Tokina AT - X M100 AF PRO D (AF 100mm f / 2.8 Macro).
