Mingus Mill, on the North Carolina side of Great Smoky Mountains National Park, is a prime example of late 19th century engineering efficiency.
While nearly all mills have a millrace (seen here) channeling water from a stream to a mill-wheel, this mill channels the water into a penstock, which is a tall shaft of water maintained at a constant pressure to turn a turbine at the end of a pipe at the base of the shaft. The turbine is attached to the grinding stones; and, in this case, generates about 11hp at 400 rpm - pretty solid for its day!
The turbine is more efficient than a water wheel, which typically sits in water itself and has some back-pressure, and significant losses in the turn cycle.
The mill was an important hub in frontier life. Typically, families would bring their grains on Saturday for the miller to ground into flour. The miller would take a portion as payment (typically around 1/8) and might sell it to other users or customers who were conducting other bartering business in the nearby open spaces.
This mill, on the Mingus Creek, was built in 1886 and operated daily until 1930s when the NPS bought the land to make this Great Smoky Mountains NP. The NPS restored the mill to operational status in 1968, and it is used to demonstrate frontier life to visitors daily. While it is still fully functional, the grain milled here can not be sold for consumption because the resulting flour has been touched by so many tourists that it cannot be USDA approved.

The pale chanting goshawk is an opportunistic raptor and eats a wide variety of prey including small mammals, lizards, birds, large insects and carrion. It has also been recorded predating upon Tent tortoise and Leopard tortoise hatchlings which are swallowed whole while the shell is still soft. There is some evidence of social hunting in breeding groups but solitary hunting is the norm. Pale chanting goshawks commonly associate with foraging Honey badgers and feed on organisms that are flushed by the Honey badger's feeding activity. This association increases the hunting opportunities and prey capture success of the pale chanting goshawk while the honey badger does not suffer any loss of foraging efficiency. (Wikipedia)

As far as I can tell, sea otters have a well-refined process for eating crabs: (1) eat the legs first, so it can't run away (2) snap off and eat the claws second, so they won't pinch your face (3) pop off the carapace to eat all the insides and (4) rinse and repeat with new crabs until naptime. What accelerates 0-60 in ~2 seconds, has around 1000hp, and has a price starting at over a lofty 1/2 million? A Ferrari SF90, that's what! Get out your checkbooks, gents!
Not all plug-in hybrids are built for efficiency; some are built for speed. The Ferrari SF90 is one such counterexample, combining a twin-turbo V-8 with a trio of electric motors and a 6.5-kWh battery pack to spit out 986 horsepower in standard trim. The SF90XX models, laser-focused on race-track driving, get an extra 30 horsepower—as if they needed it—awarding the SF90 lineup entry in the four-digit power club. The massive power output goes to all four wheels with the front tires driven electrically. Double-X versions also have a stripped-down interior and other changes in the pursuit of all-out lap time. The standard SF90 is now available only as a convertible called the Spider, with a luxurious cabin lined in leather and featuring an unconventional screen-and-control layout. The XX can still be had in Stradale coupe form or as a Spider. Whichever version of the SF90 you fancy in your wild imaginings, know that the powertrain, aerodynamics, and chassis wizardry come together to make one of the best mid-engine sports cars in the world—Ferrari or otherwise.
The standard SF90 Spider comes packed with enough amenities to make it a satisfying pick, especially if you plan to keep to the street more than a race track. If you want to give this Ferrari a more customized appearance, you can select from a host of upholstery choices and paint hues. There are several different wheel designs, and the list of available upgrades includes carbon-fiber components, a titanium exhaust, a digital rearview mirror, and brake calipers in a variety of colors. Which one to buy? There’s no wrong answer.
With the SF90, power comes from a massively powerful V-8 and three electric motors. The twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter V-8 generates a mighty 769 horsepower on its own, and the trio of electric motors provides an additional 217 horsepower. In the end, the gas/electric powertrain generates a net output of 986 horsepower and 590 pound-feet of torque. Upgrading to the SF90 XX unlocks 30 more horsepower for a total of 1016 hp and adds a feature Ferrari calls Extra Boost, which temporarily increases power output to help regain speed when exiting a corner. Power is sent to all four wheels, making this the first mid-engine Ferrari with all-wheel drive. An eight-speed automatic transmission oversees the proceedings. Different driving modes allow you to tailor the car's handling to suit your preferences. Use the mode selector to dial up EV Only, Hybrid, Performance, or, last but not least, Qualify—a setting that allows you to fully exploit the car's performance capabilities.

Train travel is often considered the most civilised mode of transportation because it combines comfort, efficiency, and environmental friendliness in a uniquely human way. Unlike cramped air planes or stressful car journeys, trains offer spacious seating, freedom to move around, and the opportunity to relax, read, or work while watching the landscape unfold. The rhythmic motion and quiet hum encourage reflection and conversation, fostering a sense of calm rarely found in modern travel. Moreover, trains connect city centres directly, avoiding the chaos of airports and long security lines, making the entire experience more dignified and enjoyable.

The village of Oradour-sur-Glane in Haute-Vienne became horribly famous for the massacre of June 10, 1944. This peaceful village was surrounded in the afternoon by 200 soldiers of the 2nd SS Panzer Division 'Das Reich'. What should have been an ordinary identity check turned into a brutal bloodbath. Men, women and children were shot and burned with cold-blooded efficiency. In total, the Nazis are said to have killed 642 people, 207 of which were children.
Symbol of Nazi barbarism and memorial site, Oradour-sur-Glane has been frozen in time ever since. During a visit, the burnt cars and houses will give you an idea of the magnitude of the massacre. Read the various memorial plaques that can be found in the main road leading to the market square.
Near the village, the underground memorial center provides an overview of Nazi history, from its rise to this tragic day, with an exhibition that invites reflection on peace and human rights. To honor the villagers, the Center has been trying since 2014 to give a face to the fallen and have it engraved. More than 500 have been recovered so far.
the whole village is now a place for reflection , a new village has been built next to it .

Excerpt from en.wikipedia.org/wiki/M%2B:
M+ is an art museum located in the West Kowloon Cultural District of Hong Kong. It exhibits twentieth and twenty-first century art encompassing visual art, design and architecture, and moving image. It opened on 12 November 2021.
The M+ Collections focus on twentieth- and twenty-first-century visual culture, encompassing the disciplines of design and architecture, moving image, and visual art, and the thematic area of Hong Kong visual culture. The museum is intended to rival the Tate Modern, New York's MoMA and the Centre Pompidou in terms of the breadth and importance of its collections. The HK$5.9 billion institution is led by Museum Director Suhanya Raffel since January 2019 and administered by the West Kowloon Cultural District Authority (WKCDA). A separate subsidiary company will be set up in the future with the aim of ensuring its "independence and efficiency".
The inaugural director, Lars Nittve, explained that the name is drawn from the concept of being a "museum and more", and that his team sought to move beyond the typical model of the art museum, for example, by serving as a showcase of diverse subjects like architecture, film, and all manner of moving images including animation and video games.
After an architectural competition, six finalists for the design of the M+ museum were announced in 2012, namely Herzog & de Meuron and Farrells, Kazuyo Sejima and Ryue Nishizawa (SANAA), Renzo Piano Building Workshop, Shigeru Ban and Thomas Chow Architects, Snøhetta, and Toyo Ito and Benoy. Each team was compensated with HK$1 million. The winning design, by Herzog & de Meuron and Farrells, was announced by the WKCDA in June 2013. As part of the Masterplan for the West Kowloon Cultural District designed by Foster + Partners, the architects proposed incorporating the use of underground "found space", referring to the space surrounding the Airport Railway tunnels running directly beneath the site, as a "radical" subterranean exhibition and performance area.
The building's design has the basic appearance of an upside-down T. The main horizontal slab housing exhibition spaces is lifted off the ground, permitting pedestrian circulation underneath. Above, a tower houses "public restaurants, lounges and gardens" along with offices and research facilities. Of the structure's total 700,000 square feet (65,000 m2), plans call to reserve 185,000 square feet (17,200 m2) for exhibitions, only slightly more than MoMA. In addition to the interior space, an LED lighting display system is integrated into the facade, serving as a gigantic screen for works of art, visible across Victoria Harbour.
Construction of the museum began in 2014. A time capsule containing artwork of local schoolchildren, to be unsealed 100 years later, was laid on the site in 2015. The museum building was completed in December 2020, with the occupation permit obtained on 24 December 2020.

China and a few Asian countries and regions are the only countries or regions that adhere to the Covid-19 zero policy. In any city with an epidemic, even if it is a single case, all residents in the city will be called on to do nucleic acid testing to actively identify those who carry the virus and carry out medical prevention and treatment.
In order to save costs, China has also adopted the method of 10 people, one reagent, which greatly reduces the cost of nucleic acid testing and improves efficiency.
Seemingly Chiselled from stone the Marsh Harrier (when it comes to looks at least) is a 'brute' of a bird
A winged nightmare whether you be avian or small mammal., this super predator can twist and dive in a blink of an eye., those razor sharp claws ready to tear you apart with lethal efficiency
Photographically it's a game of patience., waiting., and then hoping your quick enough to capture the deadly moment
When 'Yes' becomes 'No' (And vice-versa)
Today has sprung a surprise
a leak
to which nothing seems able
to stop the demise
an implosion so bleak
Help is the left hand
that doesn't seem right
such unfamiliar penmanship
like a foreign land
that doesn't seem quite
Yesterday seemed in full agreement
a winning ticket to trust
with the care of Summer
an affectionate twist so vehement
seeking a cure for fateful thrust
If today is God-given
then let it pray now
for my faith in tomorrow
has all but ebbed presently unforgiven
it's fastidious aura without a vow
Compounding the bloody malaise
breaking every rule of thumb
with bone-crunching efficiency
I enter it's damnable phase
with the shape of things to come...
Monday, Monday is the next target
always there to reimburse the weekend
for emotional debts accrued
via the informative tell-tell nugget
better known as the spine-chilling dead end
That comes with hope's overspend,
only pain for pain seems able to balance these books
into one voluminous relict
from where a thunderous preface does portend
the lost plot for which survival now looks.

February 26th, 2022 marked the second to last day of normal operation on the Chicago South Shore’s famous 1.8 mile stretch of street running on 10th and 11th streets in Michigan City Indiana. The railroad and the community have shared this stretch of roadway since 1908, and over the past 114 years much has changed. Michigan City and the surrounding areas have changed, the railroad has changed and modernized with the times, but one of the things that, for the most part, has stayed relatively the same is the presence of the Chicago South Shore & South Bend railroad and its interurban and freight trains running down the middle of the streets. The community and railroad have coexisted fairly well over the past 114 years considering trains and motorists share the same piece of roadway and the proximity of homes and businesses to the railroad.
However, change is inevitable whether we like it or not I guess, and soon the famous street running will be significantly altered. The streets will close and vehicle traffic will be detoured onto alternate routes. Interurban passenger service will use buses to bridge this stretch of railroad, and freight traffic will mostly run at night. Once the $500 million project is complete the vehicle traffic will return to a new one-way road, the interurban passenger and freight trains will once again run on a more normal schedule but will return to a new double track main through town. The project is designed to help with congestion, efficiency, and safety through Michigan City. But at the same time it comes at a loss of the famous street running that was a time capsule glimpse back into a forgotten era of railroading over 100 years ago.
As the sun dips down close to the horizon on this late February day, a pair of CSS SD38-2s run light down 10th street, as people from all over flocked to Michigan City to document the final moves of normal operations down what could be the most famous stretch of street running left in North America.

Aerial photograph of the British Sugar factory, Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk — one of only four remaining sugar beet processing plants still operating in the UK. Opened in the late 1920s, it has grown into a vast, highly efficient industrial complex, handling over two million tonnes of beet every year during the autumn and winter campaign. The factory produces around a quarter of a million tonnes of refined sugar annually, together with valuable by-products including animal feed, lime for agriculture, and bioethanol.
The six tall silos store tens of thousands of tonnes of finished sugar, while the circular tanks and clarifiers handle beet juice and wastewater treatment. The surrounding lagoons and settling ponds are part of the site’s environmental management system. Steam billows from the main chimney as part of the energy recovery process — much of the plant’s heat is recycled to improve efficiency.
British Sugar’s Bury St Edmunds site plays a vital role in East Anglia’s long-standing beet industry, supporting hundreds of local farmers and marking nearly a century of continuous production.

The half-timbered show house for energy efficiency and contemporary living demonstrates how traditional half-timbered houses can be modernised without losing their historical character. Inside the house, the focus is on combining traditional construction methods, modern refurbishment techniques and a contemporary living situation. Outside, large components - such as different types of photovoltaic systems, an exemplary air-to-water heat pump, geothermal collectors and a solar fence - are presented. These systems are examples of the energy-efficient, environmentally friendly and sustainable use of energy in timber-framed buildings.
The garden also shows how biodiversity can be promoted through targeted landscaping and the use of natural materials.
The constructed wetland is an example of effective ecological water purification techniques that also provide habitats for aquatic plants and animals. The choice of plants and the "right" use of stones, sand and gravel create habitats for insects, birds and other small animals.
At the end of the day, no amount of investing, no amount of clean electrons, no amount of energy efficiency will save the natural world if we are not paying attention to it - if we are not paying attention to all the things that nature give us for free: clean air, clean water, breathtaking vistas, mountains for skiing, rivers for fishing, oceans for sailing, sunsets for poets, and landscapes for painters. What good is it to have wind-powered lights to brighten the night if you can't see anything green during the day? Just because we can't sell shares in nature doesn't mean it has no value.”
― Thomas L. Friedman

Friday evening, as if on cue for the Labor Day Weekend, several fires have broken out within 60 miles of Kingsburg in the Sierras. Our air quality is crappy on a normal basis. Then the numerous fires started by lightening in the Bay Area, Santa Cruz and Monterey areas, brought more smoke and particulates to our valley. The Monterey fires started when we were over there for five days trying to get away and hoping for cooler temperatures and better air quality. That didn't work out (except for the cooler air part).
Back home we watch as a small fire starting Friday night grows to consume huge amounts of Sierra forests. Areas that were packed with Labor Day weekend campers, boaters, hikers and whatever, were shut down and evacuated. More ash and particulates now pouring into the valley.
Each morning when I wake up, I have an internal debate about whether I'm better off not to go for a walk and become more sedentary, or go for a walk and breathe in all manner of toxins. Some days I go, some not. This morning I was up at 4:30 A.M., and out the door around five. As I backed the car out of the driveway, I realized I forgot my hat, so stopped and went inside to get one. As I passed the headlights, I could see lots of small particles of smoke, ash, or whatever, dancing around. Needless to say, I didn't have much trouble imagining that stuff lodging itself deep into my breathing apparati. Deflated, I drove to the donut shop and got a cup of coffee and two donuts to soothe my feelings of hopelessness. And, what better way to lift your spirits than a sugar and caffeine high? I then went to the place where I usually park the car and commence the walk, but today, I sat there in darkness eating my donuts, drinking the coffee, and listening to the news on NPR.
After that, I chose to cruise in the hopes that I might find an image for my camera as the sunrise appeared. Nothing found. Just as I was giving up and headed home, I did see this. Seemed kind of fitting for the day.

Coastal Standard carries palletized frozen product below decks with space for containerized or breakbulk cargo topside. Moving cargo on and off the ship is done by the sideport loading system built by TTS of Bergen, Norway.
"Seattle’s Coastal Transportation announces the delivery of its new vessel, the Coastal Standard. The ship is entering service to Alaska on February 17, 2016, replacing two 50+ year-old vessels.
The Standard measures 242 feet long with a beam of 54 feet and a refrigerated cargo capacity of 120,000 cubic feet. The vessel’s revolutionary and highly efficient design, completed by NaviForm Consulting & Research, of Vancouver, British Columbia, incorporates entirely enclosed cargo holds, which are accessed through a waterproof door in the hull’s port side. This prevents rain and snow from entering cargo areas, and increases cargo handling efficiency. Palletized cargo is loaded and offloaded by forklifts on an elevator that connects the upper and lower cargo areas as well as the main deck.
The molded hull was designed for fuel efficiency and incorporates a bulbous bow and a canoe stern, and is fitted with a high-efficiency rudder. The Standard is powered by a 3,084 horsepower C280-8 Tier 2 Caterpillar engine, which enables an exceptionally fast service speed of 14 knots.
The vessel was built at Dakota Creek Industries shipyard in Anacortes, Washington. Delivery to Coastal Transportation was February 5, 2016.
The Coastal Standard is the first brand new U.S.-built/U.S.-flagged vessel to enter the Western Alaska trade in more than twenty years." - Coastal Transportation.

Modern Times is a 1936 silent comedy film written and directed by Charlie Chaplin in which his iconic Little Tramp character struggles to survive in the modern, industrialized world. The film is a comment on the desperate employment and fiscal conditions many people faced during the Great Depression, conditions created, in Chaplin's view, by the efficiencies of modern industrialization.

In an effort to improve fuel efficiency, NASA and the aircraft industry are rethinking aircraft design. Inside the 8’ x 6’ wind tunnel at NASA Glenn, engineers tested a fan and inlet design, commonly called a propulsor, which could use four to eight percent less fuel than today’s advanced aircraft.
The new propulsor is designed to be embedded in the aircraft’s body, where it would ingest the slower flowing air that normally develops along an aircraft’s surface, called boundary layer, and use it to help propel the aircraft.
The tests showed that the new fan and inlet design could withstand the turbulent boundary layer airflow and increase efficiency. Results of the tests can be applied to cutting-edge aircraft designs that NASA and its partners are pursuing.

The building has an unusual, bulbous shape, purportedly intended to reduce its surface area and thus improve energy efficiency, although energy use measurements have shown this building to be fairly inefficient in terms of energy use. It has been compared variously to Darth Vader's helmet, a misshapen egg, a woodlouse and a motorcycle helmet (in wikipedia)
